Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. Singapura Suite was commissioned by Singapore's Ministry of Education Extracurricular Activities Branch to serve as a compulsory piece for the 1999 Singapore Youth Festival. 'Singapura' is the original name of Singapore in Malay, the native language there. Because Singapore is one of the most important harbors in the world, this two-piece work opens with a seaman's dance. An authentic melody, Chan Mali Chan, is woven into the middle of this first part, whose ABA form becomes clear through the recapitulation of the seaman's dance in a somewhat altered form. Singapore is also a dynamic city-state alive with excitement, thus the second part begins with a fitting dance, a fastbourrée. As contrast there is a second authentic melody, Dayung Sampan, a more easygoing sailing song. This short but curious suite ends in high spirits with a recapitulation of the beginning. / Niveau : 2.5 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Fanfare

Hungarian Rondo was composed by Zoltán Kodály in December 1917, drawing on material from the incidental music he had written for Zsigmond Móriczs play Pacsirtaszó (Skylarking). The rondo form is shaped out of four new-style Hungarian folk songs and an instrumental dance melody. Kodály prepared the piece in two somewhat different versions, one for two clarinets, two bassoons and string orchestra, and the other for cello and piano. The orchestral version received its first performance in Vienna on 12 January 1918 at a 'historical concert' organized by the War Ministry of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The cello version was premi?red by Miklós Zsámboky and Ottó Herz at the Budapest Academy of Music on 4 November 1927. Neither version appeared in print in the composers lifetime. The version for string orchestra was edited in 1976 by Ferenc Farkas and István Máriássy (and is distributed as a hire material under the order number K-1). The cello version appears here in print for the first time. The publication is based on the composers surviving manuscript and a contemporary manuscript copy of this. Par MAINTZ PHILIPP. Philipp Maintz was born in Aachen, Germany, in 1977. He received his first composition lessons from Michael Reudenbach. He studied composition with Robert HP Platz in Maastricht from 1997-2003, graduating with distinction, followed by a further degree in composition and electronic music with Karlheinz Essl at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz. He has received scholarships and invitations from institutions including the Electronic Studio at the University of Liège, the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, IRCAM Paris and the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Culture, an Artist’s Scholarship from Lower Saxony for the Künstlerhof Schreyahn and otherhonours: the Supportive Prize from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in 2005, a scholarship from the Wilfried Steinbrenner Foundation in 2006 and a German Government Scholarship to study at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris in 2007, Scholarship awarded by the German Minister of Culture for a one-year stay at the German Academy Rome, Villa Massimo (2010). His compositions have been performed at festivals including the International Gaudeamus Music Week Amsterdam, agora-festival, Paris, ars nova (SWR), International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, musica (Strasbourg), Wien Modern, Hear&Now London and the Salzburg Festival./ Répertoire / Alto et Piano

Opérette-Bouffe En Un Acte. Par OFFENBACH JACQUES. An opera buffa in one act by Offenbach, in Germany mainly known under the title of 'Salon Pritzelsberger', which has enjoyed continuous popularity since its world premiere in 1860 until the present day. Since original performance materials were lost after the death of the composer, several numbers like the overture and the legendary Trio italien could not be reconstructed in their original instrumentation. Therefore, the access to the autograph of the score granted to the editor Jean-Christophe Keck by the descendants of Offenbach was of inestimable value in order to publish this gem of opera literature in an authentic source-critical edition for the first time. In their variant of the 'Bourgeois Gentleman', Offenbach and his co-author, the Duc de Morny, President of the Ministry of Internal Affairs under Napoleon III, make fun not only of the airs and graces of the nouveaux riches but also of the musical star cult of the 19th century which apparently was hardly any different from that of today…/ Répertoire / Chant et Piano
