10 Virtuoso Pieces for Solo Violin. Par IGUDESMAN ALEKSEY. Challenging and unusual concert pieces for the more advanced violinist
Aleksey Igudesman takes us to his homeland and then around the world with his own arrangements and humorous compositions for solo violin. Aleksey Igudesman's solution, when considering mistakes that could be made when performing well-known virtuoso pieces, was to '…write my own virtuoso pieces so that in performance I could make my own mistakes without anyone judging me.' He generously invites performers of these works to 'feel free to alter them in any way, be it the rhythm, articulation or even the notes and form.'

Camille Saint-Saëns was justifiably proud of his Symphony No. 3 in C minor op. 78, dedicated to the memory of Franz Liszt. Like Beethoven’s Ninth, this so-called “Organ Symphony” was commissioned by the Philharmonic Society in London, where itreceived its premiere on 19 May 1886. In this first scholarly-critical edition of the symphony, a great many inconsistencies and mistakes inherent in the previously used edition have been unveiled and corrected. The edition of Symphony No. 3 marks the launch of a large-scale project: the publication of “Camille Saint-Saëns - Complete Edition of the Instrumental Works”. Following the universal success of his dance music Johann Strauss turned his attention to operetta. Die Fledermaus was one of his finest efforts in which he created a sparkling masterpiece that premiered to instant acclaim onthe Vienna stage in 1874.Alfred is still in love with the Rosalinde now the wife of Gabriel von Eisenstein and tries to serenade her. Rosalinde resists but melts on hearing his high A. The suitor leaves as Eisensteinarrives from court: he has been sentenced to a fortnight in jail for a civil offence. Falke a friend slips in and invites Eisenstein to a masquerade so he can accumulate pleasant memories before his confinement in jail.Rosalinde receives the ardent Alfred but their tête- -tête is interrupted by the warden Frank who mistakes Alfred for the man he has come to arrest. Rosalinde persuades Alfred to save her name by posing as her husband and Frankcarts him off to jail. In an antechamber at the palace Rosalinde arrives disguised as a Hungarian countess and is soon wooed by her own husband whose pocket watch she steals to hold as proof of his philandering.Champagne flows and the guests dance wildly until dawn. When the clock strikes six Eisenstein staggers off to keep his appointment at the jail. Frank arrives at the prison still giddy with champagne. Hearing someone atthe door he admits Eisenstein who has come to begin his sentence. The new prisoner is surprised to learn his cell is already occupied by a man who claims to be Eisenstein and who was found supping with Rosalinde! Rosalindeherself then hurries in to secure Alfred's release and press divorce charges against her husband. Enraged Eisenstein accuses his wife of promiscuity at which Rosalinde whips forth the watch she took from him at the ball. All ispronounced to have been a joke and Orlofsky and his guests celebrate the reconciliation of Rosalinde and Eisenstein. This is the Schirmer edition of the Libretto in English only.

The score and parts were published by Bote and Bock, Berlin, in 1879. This Urtext edition is based on the composer's autograph score. It corrects mistakes found in the first edition and so, for the first time, the editor incorporates omitted passages from the autograph, marking them with Vi-de. Britten's Two Portraits for strings - the composer himself called them 'Sketches' - were composed in August and September 1930 during the summer holidays preceding the sixteen-year-old composer's first term at the RoyalCollege of Music in London.Both are musical depictions of character the first portraying Britten's school friend David Layton and the second introducing a solo Viola (Britten's own string instrument) a self-portraitof the composer. According to Britten's diary he planned to compose a third portrait again for strings that was to depict another school friend Peter Floyd but this movement was not written. However David Layton was to beportrayed again though very differently in Britten's later quartet suite Alla Quartetto Serioso (1933) itself revised and re-titled in 1936 as Three Divertimenti.The Pencil manuscript score in theBritten-Pears Library at Aldeburgh although hastily written is very detailed ad dynamics and phrasing are carefully notated throughout. However in several places in the first 'Portrait' the notes themselves are either difficultto decipher or due to the highly chromatic nature of the music difficult to interpret - in some cases Britten has clearly made notational 'spelling' mistakes which have been silently corrected in this editon. A list ofthose places where the reading of the manuscript is doubtful may be obtained from the Britten-Pears Library Aldeburgh.As with virtually all orchestral music from his youth Britten did not hear either 'Portrait'performed. The first performance of Two Portraits was given by the Northern Sinfonia conducted by Martyn Brabbins broadcast by BBC Radio 3 on 5th December 1995 as part of a series entitled 'Britten's Apprenticeship'.The first concert performance of Portrait No.1 was given by the Britten Chamber Orchestra conducted by Andreas Mitisek at the Konzerthaus Schubert-Saal Vienna on 10th February 1996. In 1878 Dvorák was in Vienna and was so impressed by a performance of Mozart's Wind Serenade in B-flat major K. 361 that he wrote his own wind serenade within the space of two weeks after his return. Taking Mozart's piece as his model, he supplemented the wind band with a bass part for violoncello and double bass. The op. 44 Serenade, which also delighted Johannes Brahms, was issued by Dvorák's publisher Simrock shortly after its première. He has taken into account the engraver’s copy, which was actually discovered in a trash bin at Novello’s in 1964. Its title page bears the words “Copied from my original manuscript” in Dvorák’s hand. This source proves that many of the readings contained in the first edition and faithfully adopted in all subsequent editions, were simply slips of the copyist’s pen.
