Saint Francois D'Assise is an opera in 3 acts by Olivier Messiaen. This volume is focused on the Act II - 6. Le Prêche Aux Oiseaux which depicts a moment when he preached to the birds, in Assisi. Saint Francis gives the birds his benediction to which they answer by a Concerto. Based on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, this opera is set in Italy and is composed as per below:Act I: 1. La croix 2. Les laudes 3. Le baiser au lépreux Act II 4. L'ange voyageur 5. L'ange musicien 6. Le prêche aux oiseaux Act II 7. Les stigmates 8. La mort et la nouvelle vie This opera was played at the Paris Opera in 1983. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composers of his century. Inspired by Japanese music, he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity, its diatonic aspect, its harmony with limited transposition, its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong, including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on Rhythm, Colour and Ornithology' in 7 volumes. / Chant Et Piano

Johannes Brahms:The Works for one Instrument and PianoJohannes Brahms' compositions for one instrument and piano have been standards in chamber music literature ever since their inception. These works were written with specific performers in mind and Brahms worked closely with them when refining the final texts. Nevertheless, we rarely approach the music taking into consideration the possibilities of the instruments for which Brahms wrote or the performing practices of the individual players who first performed these compositions, including Brahms himself.The New Urtext EditionsBärenreiter's pioneering new scholarly-critical editions of Brahms' works for one instrument and piano are edited by a team of musicologists who are also performers. They offer today's musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources, but also a comprehensive approach to the works, which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers.In addition to the musical text these editions offer an informative Introduction laying out the genesis, publication history and reception of the works. At the same time there is a complete list of the sources, an explanation of the editorial procedures and a Critical Commentary. Also, each volume contains a detailed discussion of specific performing practice issues raised by individual works.An integral part of Bärenreiter's Brahms publication complex is a text booklet which approaches general performance practice issues of the 19th century with regard to e.g. tempo, rubato, rhythmic flexibility and articulation. Furthermore musicians will find valuable information concerning vibrato, portamento and bowing. Last but not least characteristics of Brahms' own piano playing as well as that of his circle and contemporaries are discussed.The violin and viola sonata editions come not only with an Urtext part freed from all editorial emendations, but also with an additional part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of Joseph Joachim and his colleagues. These markings especially draw on publications of the sonatas edited by Joachim's pupils Leopold Auer and Ossip Schnirlin as well as those by Brahms' associate Franz Kneisel. A similar approach has been used for the violoncello sonatas, drawing on performance markings by Robert Hausmann (for whom Brahms wrote the Sonata in F major), Hugo Becker, with whom Brahms performed it, and Julius Klengel who was also close to his circle.Bärenreiter's new Brahms complex also importantly brings two neglected works back into the player's hands, namely the splendid versions of the op. 120 sonatas, originally written for viola or clarinet and piano. Brahms' arrangements for violin and piano unaccountably disappeared from the standard repertoire early in the 20th century. In these versions Brahms did not simply adjust the solo part for the violin, he made many alterations to the piano part, casting thought-provoking light on the clarinet and viola versions.- A pioneering set of Urtext editions- String editions include an Urtext solo part and a second part with fingering as well as performance markings- Each edition offers a preface on performance practice aspects pertaining to the respective works- A separate text booklet includes pioneering texts on general issues of performance practice in the 19th century as well as on specific issues with regard to Johannes Brahms' chamber music / Violon Et Piano

Par ZELENKA JAN DISMAS. The Missa Omnium Sanctorum ZWV 21 is Zelenka?s last mass setting. It contains three extended arias (one each for soprano, alto and tenor), concertante choruses and unusually expressive choral fugues. Especially powerful in effect is the through-composed Credo in this mass, with a ritornello that is one of Zelenka?s most beautiful inspirations. The score and parts material of this new edition are based on the corresponding volume of the ?Das Erbe deutscher Musik? series, from which Breitkopf and Härtel also took over both its informative preface as well as the critical report. 'Zelenka?s artistic personality, his biography and his compositional style are utterly distinctive. His style is highly experimental. Was Zelenka really one of the greatest composers of the 18th century, or only one of the most interesting' I think that he still has several surprises for us.' Long believed to have been conceived in 1689 for a performance at a ?School for Young Gentlewomen?, scholars have debated the origins of ?Dido? in recent decades, a process hampered by the lack of early musical sources. This edition addresses these challenges and evaluates the earliest sources that reproduce the opera in its surviving form. Surprisingly, these date from the 1770s and 80s, some ninety years after the work was written. Three key manuscripts ? now held at the Bodleian Library in Oxford (UK), at Tatton Park Library which is a National Trust property near Manchester (UK), and at the Wakayama Prefectural Library (Japan) - were all copied from the same original, most likely a handwritten score from 1704 which reappeared in the early 1770s, only to disappear again. This is the first 'Dido' edition based on the Tatton Park manuscript as the main source. It was produced during the second half of the 18th century by Philip Hayes, one of England's most prominent musicians. He was known in musicology for his meticulous copies of Purcell's music, often from the autograph manuscripts. S. 6), composed during his Lucca period (1805-1809), forms part of a series of music written for solo violin that has failed to attract the attention of both performers and scholars interested in Genoa’sfamous violinist. This work – published several times in the nineteenth century (especially outside Italy, with various titles: Duetto per un violino solo, Duo Merveille, Meraviglia di Paganini word etc. ) – is divided into twomovements ( Adagio – Allegro molto ). Paganini used a two-staff system of musical notation to produce two distinct levels of sound, as well as graphically: pizzicato on the lower line, arco on the upper. It is a short, pleasing piece, containing all the typical characteristics one expects from Paganini: melody and instrumental virtuosity. Béla Bartók's series of piano pieces For Children, based on folk melodies, was written around the end of the first decade of the 20th century. The pieces were published shortly afterwards by the Hungarian publisher Károly Rozsnyai. That first publication was in four volumes, the first two containing a total of 42 pieces based on Hungarian folk tunes, the third and fourth containing 43 pieces based on Slovakian folk tunes.In 1943, whilst in the United States, Bartók prepared a revised version of the collection for the publishers Boosey and Hawkes. The revisions were minimal: two Hungarian and four Slovakian songs were eliminated, there were a few minor alterations incorporating new ideas, some of the pieces previously written with accidentals had key signatures added, a few pieces were rewritten with changed meters - some fingerings were added or changed.The composer prepared the revised 1943 edition by using copies of the first edition on which he marked minor changes - where the changes were more extensive, fresh manuscript was written and a new version engraved. However, much of the engraving of the first edition was preserved in the 1943 edition. Publication took place in 1946, after the composer's death - it is not known if he saw final proofs prior to printing.The revised edition was published in two volumes, which now have been published together as one volume for the first time. / Piano

The most important editions published in the 19th century are compared with regard to musicological questions in the work. The genesis of some misunderstandings included in the 1913 and 1964 Ricordi editions is traced.
