The third song, Colloque sentimental, was written in 2003 for Alison Smart and Katharine Durran’s New French Song project. It was as a result of having written one short song to words by Verlaine that I subsequently decided to set two further poems to make a group of three. All three were also set by Debussy: L’ombre des arbres and Chevaux de bois appear in Ariettes Oubliées, while Colloque sentimental belongs to Debussy’s second set of Fêtes Galantes. The poems I have grouped together are linked by the idea of three different landscapes. In the first, Verlaine precedes the words of his own sad, pale landscape with words from Cyrano de Bergerac about a nightingale who fears himself about to fall into a river and drown. In the second poem the landscape has been occupied by a fairground where men, women and children watch as the hobby-horses go round and round before night falls and the church tolls a passing-bell. The third poem takes us into an old park where two ghosts recall their past. The one wonders if the other remembers the happy days of their past lives, but the other doesn’t want to remember, barely acknowledging the closeness they once shared, seeing only that ‘hope has fled, defeated, towards the dark sky.’ I am very grateful to Roger Nichols and Dominique Mols for their advice with the setting of the French texts and with the translations. Three Songs of Faith (No. 3) - revised edition-The richness of nature and the miracle of each newborn day are the inspiration for this piece which features the poem i thank You God for most this amazing day by e.e. cummings. A setting for SATB (divisi) by Eric Whitacre.

Transcriber's Note: The poems op.32 were written in 1903. The rst poem remained one of Scriabin's favourite compositions and would appear in most of his piano recitals. The great cellist Gregor Piatigorsky transcribed it for cello and piano a couple of decades later. I owned a copy of the music from age 15 or so but when I eventually decided to learn it I was vexed by the changes Piatigorsky had made to the original score.These include the simpli cation of rhythms dynamics and anything eccentric and typical of Scriabin. During the process of making my own version I soon realised that the middle section did not bene t from beingbroken up into separate lines. While the piano part remains untouched I have borrowed material from the second poem to ll what might otherwise feel like gaps in the cello part (this version can be heard together with pianist Bengt Forsberg on the CD called Smörgåsbord for the Hyperion label). Interestingly the story around the tempestuous second poem had originally been conceived as an aria for a planned opera. As with Brahms and the opening of the E minor sonata op.38 Scriabin uses the word legato rather than indicating this with slurs (see piano part). - Mats Lidström.

Løft mig kun bort / Come lift me up (for mixed chorus SSA*) *) the second movement may be performed by a children’s chorus or by the female voices (SSA) from a mixed chorus Programme note From my very first aquaintance with these Andersen poems I was deeply moved by the simple almost naive yet evocative imagery with which Andersenrealized his visions images like: “The Melody of the Heart” “The Poem of Beauty” “A Spiritual Hindustan” “Fly Death over the Sea of Time fly to Eternal Summer”. Along with this “childishness” Hans Christian Andersen’s poetry encompasses enormous – almost Willim Blake-ish – cosmic visions in the interpolations between e.g. “reaching the Heaven” as opposed to “you’ll find it in a Rosebud” or the juxtaposition of “Everyday Life” and “Eternal Poetry” - which become one. Thus the music came to life in my immediate encounter with these words which almost sang themselves into my Musical Furnace – if you will. Per Nørgård

Par SPEARS GREGORY. The Tower and the Garden is a setting of three poems for choir and string quartet. The texts juxtapose the dangers of technological hubris (the tower) and the need for a place of refuge (the garden) in a world threatened by war and ecological disaster. Each text suggest ways in which Catholic thought and imagery might challenge the status quo. The first text, poem 80 from the collection “Cables to the Ace,” was written by Trappist monk and social activist Thomas Merton. It is an eschatological meditation on the garden of Gethsemane, where Christ’s disciples slept on the eve of his crucifixion. Merton compares their slumber to society’s indifference to the destruction of our natural world by potentially dangerous new technologies and war. The second text was written by poet and Catholic activist Denise Levertov. It is a meditation on the Tower of Babel and the tendency for technology in the information and nuclear age to serve only its own growth and to potentially destroy our lives in the bargain. The third poem, written by Keith Garebian, is an homage to queer filmmaker Derek Jarman and his cottage garden at Dungeness on the English coast. Situated precariously between a towering nuclear power plant and the sea, the garden was Jarman’s austere refuge during the final months of his struggle with AIDS. While an atheist and highly critical of the church, Derek Jarman was intrigued by the role religious and hagiographic narratives could play in his filmic indictments of Thatcher-era Britain. Par FRANCES-HOAD CHERYL. The Sky Stretched Thin, a four-minute piece for baroque or modern violin, takes inspiration from a poem by Simon Armitage written during lockdown with the same title. The week that I read this newly published poem, I also swam in the (very cold!) saltwater of the River Crouch in Essex for the first time in the year. A Boy and a Girl. A note from the composer: A Boy and a Girl is such a tender, delicate, exquisite poem. I simply tried to quiet myself and find the music hidden within the words. I'm often asked which of my compositions is my favorite. I don't really have one that I love more than the others, but I do feel that the four measures that musically paint the text never kissing may be the truest notes I've ever written. -Eric Whitacre
