Shawn Okpebholo?s Heritage, in the Edition Peters Concert Band Series, evokes moods, events and sounds (including West African drumming and indigenous melodies) from an ethnomusicological research visit the composer undertook to Nigeria. One of the primary musical themes of the work is an adaptation of a song that comes from the Esan people, a small ethnic group in the southern part of Nigeria and the tribe to which the composer has deep historical and family ties. The Esan language is poetic in nature and, at various moments in the work, the musicians chant the text from an Esan song: Ekine leleyea do obhimen la doeki nalo (My investment in you is paid off. Because of your hard work, your future is bright). Heritage is a revised version of a work previously entitled This is Africa, which was commissioned by Professor Marcellus Brown and the Boise State University Symphonic Winds for the 2011 National CBDNA Convention and is dedicated to the memory of Dr Harry Begian. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Concert Band

Although Zoom! by Shawn Okpebholo was commissioned by the US Air Force Band, its title refers less to the speed of supersonic fighter jets than to the brand of telecommunications software that allowed digital reunions between isolated loved ones during the 2020 pandemic, and to the race for a life-saving vaccine. The seven-minute piece for strings and percussion evokes the glimmers of hope and joy that manage to survive in times of darkness. Zoom! received a streaming premiere, performed in December 2021 by the strings and percussion of the US Air Force Band under the baton of Col. Don Schofield. Commissioned by violinist Jennifer Koh as part of her Limitless recital project collaborating with composer-performers, Tyshawn Sorey's In Memoriam Muhal Richard Abrams for violin and glockenspiel is itself dedicated to the memory of another composer-performer, the titular pianist and cofounder of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. The music of Sorey's friend and mentor, in particular Abrams' large-scale piano piece Young at Heart, taught the younger composer to recognize the boundary between improvised and notated music as irrelevant, in certain ways, to the kinds of music Sorey wanted to make. In Memoriam Muhal Richard Abrams, whose complex rhythms unfold slowly over the course of seven minutes, was premiered by Koh and Sorey at Brooklyn's National Sawdust venue in March of 2018.
