This work was a test piece for the International string Quartet competition in 2005 Premio Paulo Borciani It was inspired by a keyboard piece of the same name A Sad Paven for these Distracted Tymes by Thomas Tomkins(1572-1656). Tomkins had a long association with Worcester Cathedral where he was organist - appointed magister choristarum in 1596 - and lived within the precincts until shortly before his death. At the same time he wasorganist of the Chapel Royal. When the city of Worcester surrendered to Cromwell's parliamentary forces in 1646 Tomkins had to watch the hasty dismantling of his cathedral organ and the abolition of all choral services. Thesewere the 'distracted tymes' of the 'sad paven' which he wrote in enforced retirement at Worcester.

When Beethoven visited the director of music at the cathedral in Linz, Franz Xaver Glöggl, in autumn 1812, the latter asked his guest to 'compose socalled Equali for 4 trombones for All Souls' Day [2 November]?. Beethoven readily complied - and it was to be his own funeral music. For in 1827 the Equali were sung in an arrangement for male choir as a 'dirge for Beethoven's funeral procession?. The original instrumental version is today a core work in the trombonist's repertoire. Our Urtext edition is based on the musical text in the Beethoven Complete Edition and contains a score and single parts (both in the original C and in modern bass clef). / 4 Trombones

Arranged for Soprano voice Violin and Piano.Violin part available separately: CH75240-01.Note from the composer:In the spring of 1996 my great friend and brilliant violinistFriedemann Eichhorn invited me and my girlfriend-at-the-time Hila Plitmann (a soprano) to give a concert with him in his home city of Speyer Germany. We had all met that year as students at the Juilliard School and wereinseparable. Because we were appearing as a band of travelling musicians 'Friedy' asked me to write a set of troubadour songs for Piano Violin and Soprano. I asked Hila (who was born and raised in Jerusalem) to write me a few'postcards' in her native tongue and a few days later she presented me with these exquisite and delicate Hebrew poems. I set them while we vacationed in a small skiing village in the Swiss Alps and we performed them for thefirst time a week later in Speyer. In 2001 the University of Miami commissioned me to adapt the songs for SATB chorus and string quartet and the Efroni Choir in Israel commissioned me to adapt them for SA Violin andPiano leaving me now with five(!) different versions of the same work: SATB and String Quartet; SATB Violin and Piano; SA and String Quartet; SA Violin and Piano; and the original Soprano Violin and Piano.Eachof the songs captures a moment that Hila and I shared together. 'Kalá kallá' (which means 'light bride') was a pun I came up with while she was first teaching me Hebrew. The bells at the beginning of 'Éyzeshélleg' are the exact pitches that awakened us each morning in Germany as they rang from a nearby cathedral. These songs are profoundly personal for me born entirely out of my new love for this soprano poetand now my beautiful wife Hila Plitmann.Eric Whitacre

A new engraving of Thomas Attwood's delightful miniature Come Holy Ghost this piece is suitable for Whitsundtide or for general use. Thomas Attwood (1765-1838) is perhaps best known as the composer of such charming miniatures as Come Holy Ghost which is in essence a simple threeverse hymn. Its elegant melody first sung by soprano then by a chorus (or quartet and chorus) is reminiscent of Mozart’s delicate masterpiece Ave verum corpus. This is perhaps unsurprising Attwood took composition lessons from Mozart in Vienna and one of his contemporaries quotes Mozart as saying: ‘He partakes more of my style than anyscholar I ever had; and I predict that he will prove a sound musician.’ Attwood worked closely with the royal family throughout his life. He taught music to the Prince of Wales was appointed composer and eventually organist to the Chapel Royal and organist at St Paul’s Cathedral (he is buried under the organ there). He wrote the anthem I was glad for the coronation of King George IV.
