Hector Berlioz was enthralled by Gluck and heard his masterpieces Iphigénie en Tauride Orphée Alceste and Armide in Paris. The original Italian version of Orphée gives the title role to a castrato. Gluck rewrote the part for high tenor for the performances in France (1774). In 1859 Berlioz arranged the opera so that Orpheus could be sung by the great mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot with whom he worked closely at that time. He changed the formal design by dividing the work into four instead of three acts and placing the scenes in Hades and the Elysian Fields in separate acts. He also changed certain sections of Orpheus?s part mainly in therecitatives and fundamentally reworked Gluck?s orchestration.Berlioz?s version of Orphée is published as volume 22a of the New Berlioz Edition. This vocal score is based on that volume.- Vocal score based on the Urtext of the ?New Berlioz Edition?.- Original French text underlaid with singing German translation.- Trilingual Preface (Ger./Eng./Fr.).- Performance material available for hire.

Anne Bongrain et Marie-Hélène Coudroy-Saghaï (direction scientifique). Par BE...(+)
Date parution : 2024-01-10/ Livre / Livre

In 1857 and 1858 as Richard Wagner had come to the completion of Die Walkure the second installment in his epic opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen he took time out to write a series of lieder for (and based on poems by)Mathilde Wesendonck with whom Wagner was believed to have been at the very least extremely infatuated. Whatever the truth might have been behind their relationship it is known that Wagner had met Mathilde's husband Otto inZurich and his ensuing friendship with the couple led to this beautiful set of lieder.Wagner himself called two of the set's songs (Im Treibhaus and Traume) 'studies' for his magnificent opera Tristan andIsolde and though originally intended for female voice with piano all of these songs were eventually orchestrated either by Wagner (in the case of Traume) or by other composers. When they were first performed in 1862 they weretitled Five Songs for a Female Voice. In the 20th century they also became very popular songs for some of the greatest tenors.Much earlier in 1839 Wagner had composed a three-song cycle called Trois Melodies. The firstpiece entitled Dors mon enfant was a lullaby that Wagner ascribed to an unnamed young poet of his publisher's acquaintance and of which he wrote that his wife had called 'heavenly for sending one to sleep'. He thenset Ronsard's song Mignonne and Victor Hugo's L'attente (from that author's Orientales) to round out the set. Wagner offered L'attente to the reigning diva of the time Pauline Viardot who is said to have flatly refused it.Wagner wrote in his memoirs My Life 'I have no reason to be ashamed of these small pieces.'Listen to brilliant tenor Jon Robert Cart perform these lieder. Then he steps aside and you take center stage with yourvirtuoso accompanist Narciso Solero at the piano.

Brazil has produced some of the most vibrant and exciting guitar music in the instrument's history. In this lesson Rick Udler discusses and demonstrates styles techniques and rhythms of Brazil's great players. This is a uniqueopportunity for guitarists to delve into the beautiful sounds of this musical land. Rick begins by going over chords that are commonly used by Brazilian guitarists. He then teaches the accompaniment to singer/songwriterGilberto Gil's beautiful composition 'A Paz' to illustrate the use of chords with open strings. A step-by-step analysis of Bossa Nova accompaniment in the João Gilberto style follows along with suggestions on how to develop abetter feel for this sophisticated syncopated groove. The solo guitar rendition of the Antonio Carlos Jobim/Newton Mendonça classic 'One Note Samba' will be a welcome addition to many players repertoires with it'srhythmic drive and rich harmony. Samba rhythms are then explored with examples that are sure to enhance one's groove and arsenal of techniques. Rick also gives examples of inner string movement which will prove invaluable to thoselooking for ways to generate more excitement and authenticity in their comping. A sambified version of 'Happy Birthday' demonstrates how to apply these techniques to a familiar tune and make it sound fresh. And to provide an evengreater challenge for all players Rick gives a detailed analysis of his tour de force solo guitar piece 'Amigo Paulo' composed as an homage to his friend guitar legend Paulinho Nogueira (1927-2003). This tune with it's choroinfluences incorporates many of the techniques Rick learned directly from the master and is sure to provide much musical food for thought for players who are looking for innovative new colours and textures to add to their playing.
