The Romance Anonimo (Anonymous Romance) is a simple familiar and well-loved work that is in one version or another in the repertoire of virtually every classical Guitarist. As with many seemingly simple works a good level of technical ability and musicianship is required to create a performance worthy of the music.The piece is known by many names Spanish Romance Romance de Espana Romance of the Guitar and Study in E by Rubira. Similarly the authorship is unsettled though Miguel Llobet is one of the names to which the piece is credited. The earliest known recording was a wax cylinder made sometime around 1900. Whoever wrote Romance Anonimo it is a lovely piece beloved of audiences and Guitarists alike.

Berkeley provided a folk-like setting in this song for Sophie Wyss (1897-1983) the Swiss sopranoliving in England who gave important premieres of Britten.Wyss and Berkeley gave the first performance in a BBC broadcast on 13 July 1947.He had already dedicated ‘Tant que mes yeux’ Op. 14 No.2/6 to her and withhimshe gave the first performance of that song as well as ‘Ode du premier jour de mai’ Op. 14 No.2/7 at the Fyvie Hall London on 20 February 1945. Those two songswere published performed and recorded but ‘The LowLands of Holland’ has beenneglected. It comes as close as Berkeley ever got to the English folk song tradition.This edition is based on the copyist’s score at the British Library and includes thecorrections thecomposer provided with it.

This beautiful arrangement is sure to be a favourite with audiences and choirs alike. It features lyrics in both English and Welsh.This traditional Welsh song has been a favourite within the repertoire for many years, after having been first documented by folklorist Robert Bryan. With versions sung by Charlotte Church, Katherine Jenkins and the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, Suo Gân is one of the most recognisable and well-loved tunes in the Welsh and English repertoire. This exceptional collection of 41 truly beautiful airs and ballads from the British Isles offers both well-known tunes by the prolific blind Irish harpist, Turlough O?Carolan and rarely heard melodies by anonymous composers; all have stood the test of time. Arranged for soprano or tenor recorder, these include O?Carolan?s classically influenced ?Lord Inchiquin? and ?Eleanor Plunkett? as well as ?O Gentle Dove? and ?Cuckoo Dear?? both examples of the strong tradition of song in Wales. Among other tunes, the haunting modal melodies of ?The Dark Slender Boy? and ?Enchanted Valley? express the melancholic heart and soul of the British Isles. A few of these songs have taken on a life of their own in modern times. ?Bonny at Morn?, a popular traditional tune of northern England and Scotland, was arranged for soprano voice and harp by the 20th century British composer, Benjamin Britten. ?The Skye Boat Song? originally recounted Bonnie Prince Charles Edward Stuart?s journey to the Isle of Skye after his defeat at the historic Battle of Culloden. Later, the song evolved into a lilting lullaby and was more recently used as the theme song for the popular Outlander television series. Music for SATB chorus occupies an important place in Rhian Samuel 's catalogue of works, from the early carols written in the USA, 'Jolly Wat the Shepherd' of 1970 and 'So Long Ago' (1st Prize, Greenwich Festival, 1979) to her most recent anthems for the Choir of New College Oxford. In her songs, vocal chamber music and choral compositions she has explored an impressive range of poetry, from anonymous 14th-century Welsh texts and traditional Japanese verse to Emily Dickinson, Samuel Beckett and contemporary poets including Anne Stevenson. Samuel 's three 'Jacobean Lyrics' of 1979 included a simple canonic account of George Herbert's 'I got me flowers'. Thisnew a cappella setting returns to the poet's sublime devotional verse, reflecting the dialogue structure of ' Love Bade Me Welcome ' through expressive contrasts of material and vocal ensemble./ Feuillet / SATB a Cappella

This carol was composed in March 2009 and bears a dedication to Jeremy Backhouse and the Vasari Singers with whom Pott has enjoyed a fruitful creative relationship over recent years. The folk ballad style of the anonymous traditional text lent itself well to a musical setting that preserved the original strophic arrangement and this in turn encouraged the use of textural variation in successive verses to offset repetition of the same musical material. One ‘verse’ of music actually spans two verses of text and therefore the first verse of the poem is here repeated before the fifth and last of the original an arrangement which permits three completemusical presentations. In the second of these the melody is sung by the tenors against a flowing wordlessly hushed background. In the third the melody deviates slightly presenting its central material slightly higher in pitch to create a restrained climax before a slower more melancholic peroration.
