S'vivon (se-vi-vohn) is the Hebrew word for dreidl, a four-sided top that is popular with children during the celebration of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. In this arrangement by Brendan McBrien, variations are created through the subtle use of motivic rhythms from within the melody, presenting the theme in different voices and keys in both arco and pizzicato, using the A section of the tune as an accompaniment for the B section, and, finally, changing the modality to major, which creates (for a short time) a very different feeling from the traditional minor setting. This single volume combines the best material from the author's two previous volumes, Children's Dulcimer Method Volumes One and Two. In it you will find many traditional songs and folk tunes arranged for the mountain dulcimer. Each song has a simple strum pattern indicated above it with fret numbers for the melody notes and lyrics included where appropriate. There are instructions for strumming, chording, fingerpicking, and for three modal tunings (Ionian, Aeolian, and Mixolydian). Both as composer and conductor, Ronald Corp is steeped in the English choral tradition, and in A Spotless Rose he has traversed by his own path the hallowed ground of words immortalised by Herbert Howells. Corp’s own music, chordal yet contrapuntal, and likewise redolent in its modality of a distant past ‘of ancient seers’ foreshowing’, flows smoothly in flexible rhythm, each voice a shapely strophic melody. Mindful of the famous close of Howells’s setting, Corp concludes with an exquisite ending all of his own.
