Opus 132. Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. Aucun poème romantique, aucun personnage de conte particulier n’a incité Schumann à écrire cette composition. On peut supposer aujourd’hui que le titre de ces pièces tout d’abord intitulées «Romanzen» voulait seulement évoquer un monde poétique, féérique. Probablement inspiré par le «Kegelstatt-Trio» K. 498 – «Trio des Quilles» – de Mozart, Schumann avait nourri intensivement ce projet d’une oeuvre écrite pour cette formation particulière réunissant piano, clarinette et alto, et dont l’effet singulier l’enthousiasmait. Cependant, il fallut encore près de trois ans avant qu’il n'envoie à un éditeur ces «pièces écrites avec un bon plaisir». La première édition comportaitalternativement à la clarinette une partie de violon. Based on Robert Schumann. Neue Ausgabe sämtlicher Werke, Band II/3. Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. The Fairy-Tale Narratives (Märchenerzählungen) for B-flat Clarinet (ad libitum Violin), Viola and Piano, Op. 132, belong to the few Schumann works that were composed, revised and published in a short time: composed in Düsseldorf, at beginning of October 1853, the new composition was already offered for publication to the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house on 3 November and printed in February 1854. Composition and publication of the Märchenerzählungen were accompanied, though, by difficult times, the final days before the composer was admitted to the psychiatric clinic in Endenich. The work’s reception lies in the shadow of the last creative period: The pieces were associated with his life’s darker phases and were very little played. The Märchenerzählungen transmit Schumann’s single work for this unusual piano trio with viola and clarinet. The only well-known earlier example in this setting at that time is Mozart’s “Kegelstatt” Trio K 498 (composed in 1786). Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. Brahms’s Clarinet Trio, composed in 1891, was inspired by the exceptional musicality of clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld. As he did for his horn trio, Brahms prepared a viola part as a possible alternative to the clarinet. Both scorings were rehearsed (the viola part being played by Joseph Joachim) prior to the premiere and publication of the work. Bärenreiter’s scholarly-critical edition, prepared by Christopher Hogwood, offers a foreword on the trio’s compositional process with comments on performance practice, as well as a comprehensive critical commentary and facsimile excerpts of the manuscript. Par SENFTER JOHANNA. The number of well-known clarinet quintets is quite small. The only major composers whose clarinet quintets are relatively widespread are Mozart, Brahms, Weber and Reger. The composer Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) from Oppenheim admired the music of Johannes Brahms and of Max Reger who was her teacher. Her chamber music œuvre conveys a certain closeness to the clarinet. She even wrote a Sonata for clarinet, viola, horn and piano, op. 37, a Sonata for clarinet or viola and piano, op. 57, as well as a Trio for clarinet, horn and piano, op. 60. Continuing the historic line of Brahms and Reger, the clarinet quintet is steeped in the harmony, compositional style and expressiveness of her teacher Reger - a style which she developed even further and increased in expressiveness.
