11.75 inches. This
unique collection
celebrates the
contemporary fiddle music
of northeast Ireland,
much of it for the first
time in print. Not
surprisingly, given its
location and long history
of traditional music, the
fiddle music of this
region shares some
characteristics with
Scottish music, yet it
has its own distinct
style. For those who are
not familiar with this
ruggedly attractive part
of Ireland, this book
will introduce you to
some of its music and
musicians. The tunes
presented here, collected
by County Antrim fiddler,
Rowan Leslie, have all
been written relatively
recently by local
musicians. Each tune is
offered in two
versions?one with the
barebones melody and
suggested accompaniment
chords, and a second with
ornamentation,
articulation and bowing
details. All tune types
from northeast Ireland
are represented,
including jigs and reels,
polkas and hornpipes,
marches, barn dances and
waltzes, plus set dances
and slow airs. Moreover,
the biographical sketches
and backstories provided
for each composer and
tune demonstrate how the
land itself, along with
personal experiences and
relationships, influence
the fiddle music of
northeast Ireland. $22.99 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks

inches. Two dances
for flute and harp from
Peter Maxwell Davies'
ballet Caroline Mathilde.
A new instrumentation
restores this linked pair
of dances from Davies's
second full-length
ballet, Caroline Mathilde
based on the story of the
eighteenth-century
British princess sent in
marriage to Denmark, to
the eighteenth-century
milieu of the work's
setting and musical
world. The period manners
- a gavotte in the first
dance, a gigue at the
start of the second - are
typically overlaid with
the composer's
Scottishness. In general
the harp has an
accompanying role, but it
comes forward alone in
the second movement,
which ends with bravura
from both instruments.
These two dances were
first performed in
September 1993 at the
Northlands Festival by
David Nicholson and
Eluned Pierce. Score and
flute part. Duration c.
5mins. Harp part edited
by Elune Pierce. $15.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

these little Consort

provide, in handy form,
music for informal groups
of recorders, strings and
piano * examples of the
best part-music of each
age; and (2) to suggest
to the producers of
period plays, pageants
and maskes, short pieces
which they could use for
incidental music and
dances. In this, the
addition of the recorder
to the more usual strings
and piano can give the
period quality which
would otherwise be
lacking. $7.99 - Voir plus => Acheter

The Sonatas de
Paris are divided into
two books. Comellas began
the series in early 1952
and they were finished in
1955. As with most of his
works, he composed
without having a plan to
premier them or a
commission. So upon
having them completed, he
filed them away. On many
occasions, his close
friend Jordi Giro would
read thrue the pieces or
Anna Ricci would sing his
songs, but very little of
his music was performed
during his life
time.
The two
books entitled Sonatas de
Paris are really to books
with totally different
character. The first book
is made up of short piano
pieces in a neo baroque
style. More than
following strict forms of
the baroque suite, the
pieces are more a evoking
of the baroque style.
Book one loosely follows
the idea of a suite or
ordre, where as book two
is much freer in
structure being made up
of various pieces, a few
in memory of his favored
composers (Albeniz,
Debussy, and Granados)
ending with a group of
four dances, Las indias
danzantes [Dances of the
Indian girls], that refer
to an Indian dance. This
group of dances is not
really playable by one
pianist and seems to be
really meant to be
performed piano 4 hands,
but since there is no
note about this in the
score it is hard to say.
A few of these pieces
were performed by Rosa
Sabater in Paris in
1980.

present edition is based
on manuscripts that are
in the Joan Comellas
deposit in the National
Catalonian Library in

680160680344. The
concerto has always
seemed an especially
attractive medium to me,
not necessarily because
of its expectations of
virtuosity (although
flaunting it when you've
got it certainly has its
place), and emphatically
not because of the
perception of a concerto
as a contest, but because
so much of what I write
feels song-like; I'm very
much at home with the
age-old texture of melody
and accompaniment. I
hope, before I move on,
to have the opportunity
to write concertos for
all the major
instruments, and perhaps
some of the rarer ones as
well. The oboe is not
only one of the major
instruments, it is one of
my favorite instruments.
I've always loved its
sound, but since moving
to New York I have gotten
to hear and, in some
cases, know some
extremely fine oboists
who broadened my
appreciation of the
instrument's
possibilities. I
especially remember a
concert, probably in the
late 1960's, in which
Humbert Lucarelli played
a Handel concerto,
filling out large melodic
leaps with cascading
scale passages in a way
that raised the hair on
the back of your neck,
somewhat in the way that
John Coltrane's sheets of
sound did. The sweeping
scales in the second
movement of my concerto
were definitely inspired
by Bert Lucarelli's
performance. The first,
third and fifth movements
of the Concerto for Oboe
and Orchestra are
song-like, whereas the
second and fourth have
strong scherzo and dance
qualities, including a
couple of sections that
sound like out-and-out
pirate dances to me. The
hymn-like tune at the
beginning of the middle
movement was originally
begun as a vocal piece to
be sung by my wife, son
and daughter at my
brother's wedding, but I
couldn't come up with
good works for it, so it
ended up as an
instrumental chant. The
opening and closing of
the concerto make use of
the oboe's uniquely
soulful singing. I had
not heard Pamela Woods
Pecha's solo playing in
person when she
approached me about
writing a concerto, but I
had heard her fine
recording of chamber
music for oboe and
strings by the three B's
(English, that is: Bliss,
Bax and Britten) with the
Audubon Quartet. I
actually already had some
oboe concerto ideas in my
sketchbooks; although I
didn't end up using any
of those earlier ideas,
it's interesting that
most of them tended to
share the general feeling
and tonality of the
eventual opening of the
concerto. The work was
completed on October 13,
1994. I hate the
compromises involved in
making piano reductions
-- perhaps I would feel
differently if I were a
more accomplished pianist
-- so I often decide to
make piano reductions for
four hands rather than
two. My good friend Jon
Kimura Parker is a
terrific sight-reader,
and I roped him into
coming over to my place
on February 17, 1995, to
help me accompany Pamela
on the first read-through
of the piece. The first
performance of the work
took place on July 21,

Bartók's
Mikrokosmos has been one
of the milestones in
pedagogical piano
repertoire for 80 years -
and yet it is also far
more than a classical
piano primer. These 153
piano pieces, organized
in ascending order of
difficulty, engage not
only with technical
aspects of piano playing
but also with the
fundamentals of
composition - from
Imitation and Inversion,
Ostinato, and Free
Variations, concerning
compositional technique,
to mood pieces and pieces
with programmatic ideas
such as Notturno,
Boating, From the Diary
of a Fly, or the famous
Six Dances in Bulgarian
Rhythm. Mikrokosmos first
appeared in 1940 in six
volumes. Based on volume
40 of the Bartók
CompleteEdition published
in 2020(Z. 15040), the
present Urtext edition
offers the series
gathered in three
volumes. This edition
includes Bartók's
preface, exercises, and
notes written for the

Furthermore, it also
features a preface and
comments by the editor,
which not only discuss
the genesis and the
compositional sources but
also provide performers,
teachers and pupils
alike, with authentic and
detailed information
about Bartók's
notation and the specific
performing problems of
Mikrokosmos. $28.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

Bagpipers is the first
movement of the
three-movement Sonatina
composed in 1915 (1.
Bagpipers, 2.Bear Dance
and 3. Finale). The
composer said of the
piece, ''Originally I
planned a group of
Romanianfolk dances for
piano. I selected three
parts of this and called
it Sonatina. The first
movement, Bagpipers[...]
consists of two dances
played by two
bagpipers.'' The piece is
based on a couple dance
fromTransylvania, the
ardeleana (also known as
the kanászos), while
the middle section was
inspired bythe bagpipe
playing of a middle-aged
man recorded by Bartók
in Váncsfalva (now
Oncesti) of Bihar County
during February 1910. In
1931, Bartók arranged
it for symphony
orchestraunder the title
Dances from Transylvania.
This arrangement for oboe
and piano was made by
Liszt Prize-winningoboist
Tibor Szeszler (1919
1992). $11.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

inches. Antonio
Valente blind,
Neapolitan since a
long time according
to the list of Neapolitan
musicians by Scipione
Cerreto and organist in
S. Angelo a Nilo in
Naples, is known in
modern times for his two
volumes of keyboard
music: Versi
spirituali published
in 1580 and, some years
before, the volume here
in transcription,
Intavolatura de
cimbalo, printed by
Giuseppe Cacchio in
1576. This volume has
many original features:
first keyboard tablature
ever printed in Naples,
itâ??s not written in
musical characters but in
a number-based system
never met, according to
the current studies, in
any other print or
manuscript both in and
outside Italy. The
dedication letter,
written by Fraâ??
Alberto Mazza, praises
Valente as the inventor
of this writing method,
so easy and effective
that everybody, even
uncouth youths that did
not know music and
keyboard, could attain
the result of playing
from it in two
months. The
Intavolatura presents
different genres of
music: a fantasia, six
ricercatas, a Salve
Regina on a cantus
firmus, four vocal
chansons
intabulated for keyboard
with more or less
diminutions,and nine
dances, variations and
dance/variations on
long-living tenors like
Romanesca or
Zefiro. There are
no liturgical
compositions, both
because unsuitable in a
collection for amateurs
and because Valente will
publish a new book of
sacred music in a few
years. The book is a
sort of compendium of the
keyboard genres of the
period, similar to some
older Spanish
publications and to the
later Neapolitan ones by
Trabaci and Majone. Other
contemporary volumes on
the contrary choose to
present a single type of
composition: this is the
case of the
Versetti by
Valente and the
Ricercate by Rocco
Rodio. $36.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 3 to 4 weeks

an. 'Bartók
wrote the first dance
around the time of the
Romanian movements of the
'Seven Sketches', after
his first trip collecting
Romanian folk music in
July-August 1909. The
second dance is the fruit
of March the following
year, and it was only
after some time he
decided they should be
published as a pair. From
the beginning, audiences
were impressed by the
first dance, in the
composer's peculiar
performance, with its
initial drumming, and its
driving rhythms. If less
popular, compositionally
the second dance is more
original. He parades and
varies his material in a
chain form, and this too
is reminiscent of the
dances heard in the
playing of Romanian
Transylvanian
villagemusicians, which
in his scholarly work
Bartók called 'motive
dances.' (HCD 32525
