Johannes Brahms:The Works for one Instrument and PianoJohannes Brahms' compositions for one instrument and piano have been standards in chamber music literature ever since their inception. Nevertheless, we rarely approach the music taking into consideration the possibilities of the instruments for which Brahms wrote or the performing practices of the individual players who first performed these compositions, including Brahms himself.The New Urtext EditionsBärenreiter's pioneering new scholarly-critical editions of Brahms' works for one instrument and piano are edited by a team of musicologists who are also performers. They offer today's musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources, but also a comprehensive approach to the works, which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers.In addition to the musical text these editions offer an informative Introduction laying out the genesis, publication history and reception of the works. At the same time there is a complete list of the sources, an explanation of the editorial procedures and a Critical Commentary. Also, each volume contains a detailed discussion of specific performing practice issues raised by individual works.An integral part of Bärenreiter's Brahms publication complex is a text booklet which approaches general performance practice issues of the 19th century with regard to e.g. tempo, rubato, rhythmic flexibility and articulation. Furthermore musicians will find valuable information concerning vibrato, portamento and bowing. Last but not least characteristics of Brahms' own piano playing as well as that of his circle and contemporaries are discussed.The violin and viola sonata editions come not only with an Urtext part freed from all editorial emendations, but also with an additional part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of Joseph Joachim and his colleagues. These markings especially draw on publications of the sonatas edited by Joachim's pupils Leopold Auer and Ossip Schnirlin as well as those by Brahms' associate Franz Kneisel. A similar approach has been used for the violoncello sonatas, drawing on performance markings by Robert Hausmann (for whom Brahms wrote the Sonata in F major), Hugo Becker, with whom Brahms performed it, and Julius Klengel who was also close to his circle.Bärenreiter's new Brahms complex also importantly brings two neglected works back into the player's hands, namely the splendid versions of the op. 120 sonatas, originally written for viola or clarinet and piano. Organ Works Based on Compositions by Bach and Others
Genres such as sonata, trio and concerto were initially uncommon in the keyboard music of the early 18th century. Thus it comes as no surprise that many of the pieces in this volume are arrangements by Bach of original compositions and of works by other composers. Next to the Sonatas BWV 525?530 and the Concertos or concerto movements based on pieces by other composers BWV 592?596, the volume also contains the Trio in D minor BWV 583, the Trio settings BWV 585?587 as well as the early versions of BWV 527 and 528. Moreover, the CD-ROM offers eight arrangements of trio movements by Bach made by others. In his detailed introduction, Pieter Dirksen discusses various aspects of these pieces' origins, inasmuch as they help us better understand the works. The organist will especially welcome the comments on performance practice and registration. It is precisely the fact that these works derive from chamber-music models that leads to individual considerations for each work group.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld for making the elderly Brahms so interested in his instrument. In the 1890s the composer wrote the Trio op. 114, the Quintet op. 115 and the Sonatas op. 120 - three gems in the clarinet chamber music repertoire. Brahms also provided a part for viola as an alternative to the clarinet. The revision of our edition of the viola version of opus 120 is based on the musical text of the New Brahms Complete Edition and in many respects contains significant improvements: we were able to consult the autograph for the first time - the newly set piano score now contains the viola part - and viola players can benefit from fingerings and bowings by Tabea Zimmermann in the solo part. / Alto Et Piano

Partant des premiers essais effectués entre seize et dix-neuf ans, elles permettent de retracer l’évolution constante de son écriture jusqu’aux cinq grandes so-nates composées entre 1823 et 1826, puis aux trois sonates magistrales composées peu de temps avant sa mort qui le placent incontestablement au même niveau de maîtrise que Beetho-ven dans ce domaine. L’édition Urtext en trois volumes des sonates pour piano de Franz Schubert aux éditions Henle contient dans ce volume I sept sonates des deux premières périodes toutes passées à la postérité avec desnuméros d’opus spécifiques. Seules deux furent éditées du vivant de Schu-bert. Le volume commence par la sonate sans doute la plus connue de ces deux périodes, la sonate en La majeur D 664, op. post. 120. Mais les sonates de Haydn quittés le créneau des leçons de piano de long depuis et sont sont établis dans le répertoire de concert - édition de Landon a certainement joué un rôle majeur dans cette. L'anniversaire de Haydn en 2009 est une occasion bienvenue à réviser complètement cette édition ' légendaire ', parce que les nouvelles sources ont été découverts et questions concernant l'authenticité ont été clarifiées sur plus de quarante ans - les principes éditoriaux pour la musique du XVIIIe siècle en particulier ont nettement changé entre temps. The first three movements of Johannes Brahms' E minor Cello Sonata were composed in 1862, the last movement was written in 1865. During the first years of its performance the work was received with mixed enthusiasm. By the end of Brahms' life, however, it was widely performed and by the first decades of the 20th century it was firmly embedded in the repertoire of many distinguished cellists. It was notably Robert Hausmann's advocacy of the work which seems to have contributed greatly to its promotion.Of particular value to the editors were the three early performance editions of the Cello Sonata op. 38 by Cornelius van Vliet and Edwin Hughes, Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg, as well as Julius Klengel. The cellists' van Vliet, Becker and Klengel's fingering and bowing allows for a better understanding of their performance practice. As such, the Bärenreiter edition comes with a cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms' contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked urtext part.An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the works' origins, early performances, its publication as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors take the premise that already a few decades after Brahms' death a widening gulf developed between the composer's expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. La Sonate pour alto et piano de Mendelssohn est l'une des nombreuses oeuvres de jeunesse qui ne furent pas publiées du vivant du compositeur. Le manuscrit autographe est daté du '14 Febr. 1824'. Mendelssohn était alors âgé de 15 ans lorsqu'il termina la composition de la sonate. Elle figure certainement parmi les oeuvres de musique de chambre de jeunesse de Mendelssohn les plus abouties. Rien que le choix de la tonalité indique le sérieux avec lequel le compositeur se plongea dans cette oeuvre. Une courte introduction Adagio est placée en tête du premier mouvement. Le mouvement central, un Minuetto, conserve la tonalité originale, et même pas le Trio, avec sa mélodie de choral, ne vient éclaircir l'atmosphère sombre du mineur. Même les plus proches amis du compositeur furent décontenancés lors des premières exécutions de cette sonate composée entre 1920 et 1922: la formation réduite et le langage moderne de la sonate provoqua en effet un véritable choc après les sonorités enivrantes de La Valse. Les podiums de concert ne peuvent désormais plus se passer de cette oeuvre résolument moderne. Afin de venir en aide aux interprètes, nous publions une version dans laquelle chacun des deux instruments se voit accompagné de l'autre. Les deux parties sont disponibles avec ou sans doigtés. Brahms had already announced his ?retirement? from composition when in the spring of 1894 he played chamber music with the cellist Robert Hausmann and the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld. This encounter apparently renewed his enthusiasm for Mühlfeld?s much admired playing and inspired him to write two clarinet sonatas in the summer of the same year. Brahms and Mühlfeld premiered the works and played them in several performances until the sonatas op. 120 were first published in June of 1895. They remain pivotal works in the clarinet?s recital repertoire establishing the clarinet sonata as a distinct and viable chamber music genre. An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the sonatas? origins, their compositional process, pre-publication performances, their publication history as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors start from the premise that already a few decades after Brahms' death, a widening gulf developed between the composer's expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. On the basis of manifold sources which include memoirs by pupils and chamber music partners, treatises and essays, early instructive editions and historical recordings, the editors deal with key issues in understanding Brahms' notation. Compared to the great classic piano sonatas, they are technically and musically simpler and typically shorter. However, they still convey the basic elements of Classical style: the relation of melody to accompaniment, articulation, stylistically authentic playing, and correct interpretation.
