for Piano Violin and Horn (Viola / Violoncello)-This Trio’s unusual scoring for horn violin and piano prompted speculation early on about a possible background to it that had no connection with music. Brahms’s biographer Max Kalbeck saw in it a lament for thecomposer’s mother recently deceased to whom he had supposedly played folk songs on the horn in his childhood. There is no doubt that Brahms loved the sound of the natural horn and bestowed several of his most inspiredmelodies on the instrument. Horn players justifiably adore this Trio op. 40 and this Henle Urtext edition now offers an optimal basis for studying and performing this masterpiece. This edition follows the musical text of the NewBrahms Complete Edition and thus guarantees the greatest fidelity to the sources and reflects the current state of research. The pianist Klaus Schilde has added helpful fingerings to the piano part. Extra parts are also providedfor the alternative scoring authorised by Brahms (with viola or cello instead of horn).

The unusual work has already been available as part of the newBrahms Complete Edition for several years.Using Brahms? original Piano reduction Johannes Umbreit has produced a playable Piano setting that optimally renders the colourfulness of the score. The fingerings andbowings for the string parts have been supplied by the experienced soloists Frank Peter Zimmermann and Heinrich Schiff. Sonata WoO postum for Violin and Piano-Edited by Clive Brown and Neal Peres Da Costa with an Urtext solo part as well as a second part with performance markings.Johannes Brahms The Works for one Instrument and Piano:Johannes Brahms? compositions for one instrument and Piano have been standards in chamber music literature ever since their inception. These works were written with specific performers in mind and Brahms worked closely with them when refining the final texts. Nevertheless we rarely approach the music taking into consideration the possibilities of the instruments for which Brahms wrote or the performing practices of the individual playerswho first performed these compositions including Brahms himself. The New Urtext Editions:Bärenreiter?s pioneering new scholarly-critical editions of Brahms? works for one instrument and Piano are edited by a team of musicologists who are also performers. They offer today?s musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources but also a comprehensive approach to the works which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers. In addition to the musical text these editions offer an informative Introduction laying out the genesis publication history and reception of the works. At the same time there is a complete list of the sources an explanation of the editorial procedures and a Critical Commentary. Also each volume contains a detailed discussion of specific performing practice issues raised by individual works. An integral part of Bärenreiter?s Brahms publication complex is a text booklet which approaches general performance practice issues of the 19th century with regard to e.g. tempo rubato rhythmic flexibility and articulation. Furthermore musicians will find valuable information concerning vibrato portamento and bowing. Last but not least characteristics of Brahms? own Piano playing as well as that of his circle and contemporaries are discussed. The Violin and Viola sonata editions come not only with an Urtext part freed from all editorial emendations but also with an

Brahms composed his ?Violin Sonata In A Major? during the summer of 1886. The work quickly became part of the standard repertoire and has remained so until today. It is presented here in a fine Bärenreiter Urtext edition and comes with an unmarked Urtext part as well as a second part marked with fingering and bowing by Clive Brown which are based on the practices of Brahms? contemporaries. An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the works? origins its compositional process pre-publication performances its publication history as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is theunique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors take the premise that already a few decades after Brahms? death a widening gulf developed between the composer?s expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. In a very concrete and practical way the editors summarize some of the key issues in understanding Brahms? notation with regard to rhythm and timing dynamics and accentuation dots and strokes slurring and non legato Piano pedalling and overholding Piano arpeggiation and dislocation string instrument fingering string instrument harmonics and vibrato. In this way the edition offers an exciting and often surprising insight in Romantic musical interpretation.A pioneering Urtext edition. With an unmarked Urtext part. With a second part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of Joseph Joachim and other contemporaries of Brahms. With an extensive Performance Practice Commentary. For further information on Romantic performance practice we recommend: ?Performance Practices in Johannes Brahms? No. 2 In G Major Op. 36.

for Violin and Piano-Brahms had already announced his ?retirement? from composition when in the spring of 1894 he played chamber music with the cellist Robert Hausmann and the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld. This encounter apparently renewed his enthusiasm for Mühlfeld?s much admired playing and inspired him to write two Clarinet sonatas in the summer of the same year.Brahms conceived an alternate version of the works for Viola from the beginning and already before the publication of these two versions he intended to do another one for Violin a version which was to require changes and was to result in an independent edition. While the Clarinet and Viola versions havedeveloped a rich performance tradition the Violin version is almost unknown. Yet for the Violin version the composer revised the original Clarinet part much more extensively than he did for the Viola version and also rewrote the Piano part to achieve a thoroughly convincing Violin and Piano idiom. This Bärenreiter edition aims to bring the neglected Violin Sonatas Op. 120 back into players? hands. An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. pour clarinette (La), 2 violons, alto, et violoncelle.

Brahms?s famous Horn Trio op.40 composed in 1865 for the natural horn is a work of considerable significance within the composer?s output. Up until now the work was believed to have a strong emotional connection to the death of his mother three months earlier. However Christopher Hogwood draws on a newly discovered source for this Bärenreiter publication a source that has not been available for any previous edition. We now learn that Brahms wrote at least the trio movement some twelve years earlier in 1853 and that it was originally intended for solo piano. This piano movement is printed in the appendix. This Urtext edition offers notonly the standard instrumentation of violin horn and piano but also the alternative scoring for violoncello or viola instead of horn. The variants found in the violoncello and viola parts are shown as ossias in the score. The introduction (Eng/Ger) describes the compositional process includes information on the performance and publication history of the work and offers comments on performance practice. A critical commentary with facsimile pages of the manuscript rounds off this pioneering edition.Appendix with the 1853 piano version of the trio movementIncludes alternative parts for violoncello and viola

The orchestra burst in after eight bars to answer the violin and the movement becomes a joyful yet frantic Finale.Available here for Solo Violin and Piano accompaniment/orchestral reduction is a Great Performer's Edition of Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D Op.77 as edited by the great Yehudi Menuhin.

It presents a solid and well researched musical text based on Brahms? autograph as well as the first edition and draws on the autograph of the two-piano version (composed six years later) for purposes of comparison. The edition also contains a discussion of the work?s historical context and performance practice as well as a comprehensive Critical Commentary with an evaluation of the sources and alternative readings. The editor Daniel Boomhower deals with the conflicting readings between the stringparts in the autograph engraver?s copy and those found in small print in the first published score as well as in the separate parts for that edition. Relevant readings from the two-piano version appear in the appendix of the Critical Commentary.New Bärenreiter Urtext editionExhaustive study of conflicting readingsNotes on performance practice (Eng/Ger)Informative Foreword (Eng/Ger) and Critical Commentary (Eng)

String Quartets in c minor and a minor op. 51-Brahms had already composed over 20 String quartets (he confessed to a friend that he had burnt all of that ?stuff?) before he finally presented his Opus 51 to the public. In the end only threesurviving works managed to withstand his high self-criticism; numerous layers of corrections bear witness to his struggle with each detail. We are now publishing the two passionate dark Quartets Op. 51 separatelyfrom the rather more lively Opus 67. The basis for this edition is the volume in the New Complete Edition of Brahms? works published in 2004 by Henle for which previously missing sources in a Swiss bequest wereconsulted for the first time.
