Concerto In C Minor for Oboe Strings and Basso Continuo composed by Matthäus Nikolaus Stulick [or Georg Friedrich Händel or Johann David Heinichen]. Additional parts are available from the publisher separately quickly and cheaply. A 'Piano Reduction' for Oboe and Piano is available separately. There are three versions of this concerto with different assignments: Source A: In the library Schwerin [D-SWl] as „de Sing. Stulick' [Mus.5337]. Source B: In the collection Rheda[D-RH] as „Del Sing. Heinichen' [Ms 389]. Source C: In the univesity library Upsala [S-Uu]als „Dell Sing. Hendell' [i hs. 19:28]. The distribution of a baroque composition under various composers names was not uncommon and usually meant that it was a worthy work of high compositional quality. This Concerto for Oboe Strings and Basso continuo can serve in any case as evidence for this thesis. The question which of the three composers mentioned was the creator of the concert can not be answered conclusively. Two arguments suggest however that Matthäus Nikolaus Stulick (c.1700-1732) is the most likely of the three candidates: - The Schwerin manuscript [Source A] that names Stulick as the composer is the best by far; it contains far fewer errors and inconsistencies than the other two. - The designation of a work by a foreign composer name makes only sense if an unknown composer publishes under a name of a much more prominent composer not vice versa. Why should a work of Handel or at his time well-known Heinichen be played under the name of someone less known? We do not know much about the life of Matthäus Nikolaus Stulick. He

for Woodwind Quintet-These two extraordinary works of late Mozart KV 594 and KV 608 were both composed to fulfill a commission for a memorial exhibit in Vienna to be played in a “mechanical clock organ.” The term “fantasy” or“fantasia” came to be affixed to these works later and is more descriptive and less cumbersome than the term Mozart listed in his own catalogue “Ein Stüke für ein Orgelwerk in ein Uhr.” They are also variouslytitled “Adagio und Allegro in f für ein Orgelwerk” and “Allegro und Andante (Fantasie in f) für eine Orgelwaltze.”The first of these composed between the monumental String Quintet in D and the Piano Concertoin Bb KV 595 is an A-B-A form comprised of an f minor Adagio opening and closing with a contrapuntal Allegro at its heart. KV 608 is more complicated opening with an f minor section reminiscent of a French Overture followed by a fugue in fminor then an Andante aria followed by a return to the opening and then a more complex version of the fugue.Despite the frustration that Mozart expressed (in a letter to Constanze) with the sound world of these mechanical devices KV 594and 608 are remarkable works which stand at an intersection incorporating what he learned about counterpoint studying at the foot of Bach while looking ahead to the emotional and harmonic poignancy of Schubert.

ACTIONS INTERPOLATIONS AND ANALYSES symphonies for bass-clarinet and large ensemble (1987-90) is what is commonly termed a work in progress. So far Schaathun has completed three of five parts. The is the composer's first large-scale attempt to investigate possible connections between ostensibly unrelated material. Explained in simple terms it involves taking two of Schaathun's 'own' type of texture (composed by means of different techniques) and letting them 'rotate' around a familiar musical object (in this case a short excerpt from Stravinskij's Symphonies of Wind instruments in which he employs the famous 'frozen' chords). In the course of thepiece the elements takes over various characteristics from one another and the form progresses from fairly clear-cut textures to a situation where the various textures are superimposed creating a dramatic flow. On a more advanced level the piece is about trying to mediate between different musical textures as metaphors for the different levels of the sound itself. One of the main questions in this context is; What is size in music? Is it possible to take a small chord(i.e. narrow register few instruments simple tone colours) and then blow it up (wide register many instruments advanced mixtures) in such a way that the listener still perceives it as the same chord? You have simply moved closer to the sound. At any rate when Schaathun composed the piece he himself travellig into the sound as if were viewing a texture from a distance. He then recomposed the same situation and drew closer and then recompose it a third time and simply get close enough to discover the world of sounds that thus emerged. A world of sounds capable of travelling at a tremendous speed... However like all concertos the piece is of course about the individual and his relationship to his surroundings (society). Schaathun has often pondered on the reason for this preoccupation wih solo concertos. The answer derives from his firm conviction that

for two Clarinets two Horns and two Bassoons-The Serenade in E-flat K.375 exists in two versions one for two clarinets two horns and two bassoons and another for the same forces plus two oboes forming an octet.From Mozart himself we know a fair amount about the occasion that led to the first six-instrument version of this work and about its early performances. Written for the sister-in-law of the court painter Hickl it probably originated toward the end of September or the beginning of October in 1781 and was first performed on 15 October the name-day of St. Theresa.The octet version probably arose in the summer of the following year. It is far more than a mechanical expansion of the sextetwith the oboes merely reinforcing the clarinets colla parte. Not only did Mozart take advantage of the occasion to make changes in the articulation and the dynamics he also altered the work’s melodic substance and formal design. The two additional high-register instruments allowed him to achieve more subtle distinctions and gradations of timbre thereby enabling him for example to vary the timbral homogeneity of the two clarinets. I was very excited about the opportunity and eager to start work but first I had to finish asymphony and a cello concerto. However when I wanted to begin writing the piece for Frankfurt inspiration became silent and remained silent for the next three years apart from the two works for chamber orchestra: I experienced my first writer’s block. This was not my first commission but the first time that I was seriously worried about a piece and started thinking about the commissioning ensemble and its expectations. If anything I held the Ensemble Modern in too high esteem. The ensemble is notorious for being a group of all-rounders who have already seen and done everything. However it was simply time for me to challenge my self-belief as composer and to search out what kind of composer I really am. Whatever the true reason was I still didn’t get anything down on paper. Nothing would gel. In 2008 a stipend from a New York foundation led me to an Italian lavender-castle from the 15th century far away from everything else deep in Umbria. The deadline for my first opera moved dangerously closer but was barely started. The next commission for an orchestra was also waiting in addition to the piece for EM: only empty sheets. When I came home six weeks later though I hadn’t finished anything the spell was broken.
