The other main source of inspiration was Schöneberg?s Second String Quartet from the early 20th century. In his introduction to the piece Nymandescribes his two background ideas when composing the work: first to make an almost ?orchestral? chamber music and second to exorcise the impressive and oppressive history of the String quartet by making his work a compendium ofquotations from the quartet repertoire. Michael Nyman is a composer pianist librettist writer musicologist photographer and film-maker whose work encompasses opera concert music and film soundtracks of which The Draughtsman's Contract and The Piano arethe best-known. Since founding the Michael Nyman Band in 1977 which tours the world he has worked with leading film directors and has collaborated with artists such as Mary Kelly Damon Albarn Carsten Nicolai and the recentOscar winning Man on Wire star Phillippe Petit.Songs For Tony for String Quartet was composed in 1993 in memory of Tony Simmons.'I began writing a saxophone quartet on New Year's Eve 1992. Inthe early afternoon of 5th January 1993 I was informed that my friend and business manager Tony Simmons had died after a long and heroic fight against cancer. I immediately sat down and wrote the music which became the fourthsong in what became a 'memorial' quartet. The previously composed music was scrapped as I decided to give each player in turn an 'aria' of his own.The first song is a transcription of an actual song - 'Mozart onMortality' - which I wrote for the Composers Ensemble in the spring of 1992. The text by Mozart himself is all too appropriate: 'I may not see another day'. The second song is adapted from the music for the scene in JaneCampion's film The Piano where the mute Ada (Holly Hunter) pushes her chief means of communication her piano overboard. This film was the last major deal that Tony negotiated on my behalf. The third song a soprano sax solo isbased on a tune I composed some years ago but was saving for a special occasion.' - Michael Nyman

Composer's Notes:When I was asked to write a piece to celebrate the restoration ...(+)
Composer's Notes:When I was asked to write a piece to celebrate the restoration of Michelangeloâs Mosè I returned to the paper written by Sigmund Freud on the sculpture which I had discovered by chance many years ago.Freudâs fascination with the Mosè began in 1901 when he visited San Pietro in Vincoli for the first time. A series of subsequent visits culminated in the publication of the Moses of Michaelangelo in 1914 from which I have usedtwo extracts to âframeâ the main body of my text which consists of selections from Michelangeloâs own letters. In 1505 Michelangelo was summoned to Rome by Pope Julis II and was commissioned to build a tomb which would reflectthe magnificence of the Pontiffâs reign. Forty years and four Popes later the tomb modified and scaled down due to a variety of financial and political changes of circumstance was completed. The letters give the impression ofan idealist at work: Michelangelo personally selected each piece of marble and supervised its transportation to Rome by his more worldly and capricious paymasters. His creative and artistic frustrations are mirrored by problems ofa more a practical nature; payment for both his services and the materials is erratic. At one point his is accused of embezzling funds. The complete text tells the story of an artists struggle and eventual triumph againstexternal circumstances. The Mosè by virtue of its very nature combines the elements of the physical and the spiritual with which Michelangelo challenged and eventually triumphed over the restraints of the context in which he hadto work. The lovingly selected and cared for marble in the hands of the unpaid exploited artist is transformed into something more substantial and eternal. Michael Nyman

Michael Nyman's Musique A Grande Vitesse (MGV) translates as ‘high speed music’ and was commissioned by the Festival de Lille for the inauguration of the TGV North EuropeanParis-Lille line in 1993. This piece of sheet music runs continuously but was conceived as an abstract imaginary journey; or rather five inter-connected journeys each ending with a slow mainly stepwise melody which isonly heard in its 'genuine' form when the piece reaches its destination. Thematic 'transformation' is a key to MGV as a whole. Throughout the piece ideas - rhythmic melodic harmonic motivic textural -constantly change their identity as they pass through different musical 'environments'. The opening bars establish both a recurrent rhythmic principle - 9 11 or 13-beat rhythmic cycles heard against a regular 8 - and aharmonic process - chord sequences (mainly over C and E) which have the note E in common. (Coincidentally MGV begins in C and ends in E). A later scalic syncopated figure (again first heard over C E and A)begins the second section featuring Brass in D flat. The topography of MGV should be experienced without reference to planning description or timetables. Its tempo changes and unpredictable slowings downbear no logical relation to the high speed of the Paris-Lille journey while the temptation to treat MGV as a concerto grosso with the Michael Nyman band as the ripeno was resisted: more suitably theband (amplified in live performance) lays down the tracks on which MGV runs.

Out of the Ruins touches on Gregorian chant and sacred music of the Baroque. This is a slowly evolving requiem that draws on Armenian traditions with no hint of Nymanâs signature propulsive rhythms. Some of the music can be heard in different form in Nymanâs third Quartet and the soundtrack for Carrington. In 1988 Armenia suffered a devastating earthquake in which caused widespread destruction and killed more than25 000 people. BBC director Agnieszka Piotrowska asked Michael Nyman to write a work to accompany a documentary she was making for the first anniversary and offered text from 10th century poet Grigor Narekatsiâs Book ofLamentations. Quoting Nyman: This Concerto was composed during the winter of 1994/95 for Elisabeth Chojnacka who gave the first performance with the Michael Nyman String Orchestra on 29th April 1995 in the Queen Elizabeth Hall London. Itshistory is eccentric and cumulative. I had met Elisabeth in Paris about a year earlier while I was working on the soundtrack for Diane Kurys' film A la Folie (Six Days Six Nights). I was attempting to persuade her to play mysolo piece The Convertibility of Lute Strings (1992) but she expressed a passion only for tangos. As luck would have it one of the cues of the Kurys score was what I fondly called a tango. Elisabeth showed interest in this andI subsequently turned it in to a harpsichord solo. Sadly during the writing of the piece my friend the composer Tim Souster died tragically. Elisabeth's enthusiasm for Tango for Tim encouraged me to write the Concerto forher. The Concerto is shaped as a very simple ABA form - the outer sections derived from The Convertibility for Lute Strings enfold an elaborated version of Tango for Tim. After the first performance Elisabeth decreed thatthe true potential of the Concerto could only be fulfilled by the addition of a cadenza. This was duly composed in the summer of 1995 - a toccata derived from harmonies first heard in the immediate post-Tango for Tim Convertibility material. (Elisabeth subsequently ordained that the cadenza could also have a life outside the Concerto as a concert piece if it had a few extensions added. Hence - inevitably the title of the piece - ElisabethGets Her Way.Duration c. 22mins.
