In 1929 Paul Wittgenstein, a pianist and war veteran who lost his right arm in the Great War, commissioned Maurice Ravel to write a concerto for him to perform. The result was one of Ravel?s most thrilling compositions and, for Wittgenstein, the most important of the many works he commissioned over the course of his career.
The piano reduction in our edition contains both Ravel?s and Wittgenstein?s fingering. Also included is a solo part without fingering, thereby giving pianists the opportunity to enter their own fingering after having studied those of Ravel and Wittgenstein.

Par RAVEL MAURICE. It was unmistakably Liszts piano piece Les jeux deau à la Villa dEste that inspired Ravel to compose one of his most famous works in 1901: Jeux deau. Laid out in sonata form, its sound is governed by myriad motions of water and sustained by innovative, highly virtuosic piano textures against a freely migrating and richly coloured harmonic backdrop. Nicolas Southon has re-evaluated the works many sources, including memoirs from musicians close to Ravel such as Vlado Perlemuter, Jacques Février and Hélène Jourdan-Morhange. Special attention has been devoted to the original part-writing in Ravels notation. Rounding off the new edition are an informative Foreword, atrilingual glossary as well as fingering and notes on performance by Ravel specialist Alexandre Tharaud. In search of 'La Valse'-Winning Performance EBBC Lille 2016 Raveling Unraveling In Search of âLa Valseâ was written for the Cory Band as their own-choice test piece for the 2016 European Brass Band Championships in Lille. The piece found its genesis in Sparkeâs The Unknown Journey (2014) for concert band and the use of Ravelâs La Valse as a structural undercurrent to the original piece is an act of reverence. Sparkeâs aim was to produce a work that is organic rather than episodic in nature. The composerâs view is that little in music does this better than La Valse and for this reason he uses various sections of this masterpiece both manipulated and quoted verbatim (including much of itsstunningclosing passages) to provide the overall geography of his new work. As the music progresses more of the Ravel appears surfacing completely as the piece reaches its climax - a gesture of homage to the French master.

Description Composed for the famous ballet impresario Serge Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes, Maurice Ravel?s Daphnis and Chloe was drawn from an ancient Greek fable. At the time, Ravel announced his intention to 'compose a vast musical fresco, less scrupulous as to archaism than faithful to the Greece of my dreams.' The resulting 'choreographic symphony' features a captivating combination of orchestral traditions and modern ideals.

Description With the premiere in 1908 of Rapsodie Espagnole , Ravel?s first entirely orchestral composition, the French composer achieved renown as a highly original and imaginative composer. In 1911 he recast the Mother Goose Suite , his extremely successful work for piano four-hands as an orchestral work. Based on five fairy tales, among them 'Sleeping Beauty', 'Tom Thumb' and 'Beauty and the Beast', this collection continues to enchant listeners of all ages with its variety of moods. After a decade after its initial appearance as a piano work, Ravel transcribed his evocative Pavane For A Dead Princess for orchestra, now one of his best-known and most frequently performed compositions. These three rich orchestral settings are presented in full score in this authoritative edition. Songlist Mother Goose Suite Pavane For A Dead Princess Rapsodie Espagnole

Conducteur et parties Saxophone Quartet (SATB) The Three Songs (Trois Chansons) dating from 1914/15 were arranged for four a cappella voices by Ravel immediately after he had written the music of these pieces. The lyrics were penned by the composer himself. The songs represent Ravel's sole contribution to choral literature. The first song consists of three sections and tells the story of Nicolette, who sets out to pick flowers in the fields. Just like Little Red Ridinghood, she meets a wolf who asks her if she is on her way to her grandmother's house (M.1-13). Fleeing from him, she meets a page who wonderswhether she would like to have him as her 'lover true'. She dismisses his proposition though she finds it hard to do so (M. 14-39). In the third section, she encounters a plump, unhandsome man (lento!). He speaks to her:'Stay, stay, my Nicolette, all this gold I give to thee', and - 'VIVO' - Nicolette takes refuge in his arms. (M.40 to end). The Three Lovely Birds from Paradise are sky-blue, white as fallen snow and bright red - just like the colors of the Tricolore, the national flag of France - which has been interpreted in many reviews as a sign of an increasingly nationalistic attitude becoming apparent in the war year of 1914. This song mourns the loss of the beloved one who went to war. The Ronde is also made up of three sections. The old women are the first to sing (M.1-28). They warn the young maidens against entering the forest since it is inhabited by all kinds of dangerous (male) beasts. Then (M. 29 ' 56) the old men warn the young lads against going into the woods because of the numerous (female) demons living there. The irony of the story is to be found in the final answer of the young people (as of M. 57), who conclude: 'We will not go into the woods since the old folks have frightened off all the beasts, anyway.'

Ravel, Maurice Tzigane Concert rhapsody for violin and piano In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim, Jelly D'Aranyi, in concert in London. Following the performance, Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D'Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin, probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel's virtuoso classic 'Tzigane'. Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano, producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon), the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel later orchestrated 'Tzigane' and both versions remain a 'must' for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. Jelly D'Aranyi performed both versions regularly throughout her long career. This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel's masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version, complete with full score and performance material, as well as in the composer's earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition; one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of 'Tzigane' from the estate of Jelly D'Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection. The version for piano and violin contains, besides the Urtext part, a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D'Aranyi. D'Aranyi's alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice. This collection of sheet music by the great French composer Maurice Ravel features 19 of his greatest pieces all newly-arranged especially for this volume. The subtle melodies and achingly beautiful harmonies of theselush Impressionist pieces truly do illustrate the sheer Joy Of Ravel. The pieces by Ravel included in this collection rank alongside Debussy as some of the prettiest Piano music evercomposed. Ravel himself categorically refused the term 'Impressionist' believing it to be reserved for paintings only but his?music so closely resembles the colourful flourishing and affective beauty of those worksof art that it is difficult to resist such a description. Featuring works like Boléro Jeux D'Eau Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte as well as excerpts from La Valse The Joy Of Ravel?forsolo Piano sound utterly divine. Pieces like Menuet Antique Prélude and the selections from Le Tombeau De Couperin?perfectly encapsulate what makes Ravel's compositions soincredible. His perfectionist methods resulted in extended harmonies complexly musical modulations and masterful melodies that make these 19 works of art an unabashed joy to play and to hear. One of the great things about thissheet music book is the visual beauty of the music. With lilting notes and extensive ties this is not only a work full of aural pleasure but it's some of the nicest-looking notation out there. Certainly in this case what you seeis what you get simply The Joy Of Ravel. The Joy Of...?series is a constantly growing collection of musical editions that is now recognised and loved throughout theworld. Originally compiled by the editorial hand of renowned teacher arranger and musicologist Denes Agay the series continues to reflect his influence and covers a wide variety of musical genres including the classics folk

The result of this encounter is Ravel's virtuoso classic 'Tzigane?. Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano, producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon), the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel later orchestrated 'Tzigane? and both versions remain a 'must? for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition - one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of 'Tzigane? from the estate of Jelly D'Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection. The cooperation between Ravel and D'Aranyi is comparable to that of Brahms and Joachim working on the Brahms violin concerto.- First scholarly-critical Urtext edition of the work - Presented are both versions: for violin and orchestra and for violin and piano- Includes Jelly D'Aranyi's fingering / Violon Et Piano
