680160922611. An
ancient world
calls… Spirit of the
Warrior explores both the
beauty and the power of a
forgotten civilization;
man’s mighty force
amidst nature’s gentle
majesty. It is dedicated
to all soldiers and
warriors, past and
present, who give their
all to protect home and
nation. The warrior shows
courage in the face of
danger, and loyalty to a
cause beyond
self-interest. The
warrior sees life’s
fragile beauty with eyes
few others can
understand. Long after
warriors fall in battle,
their spirit lives on in
the people and lands they
have protected. Using
only the first six notes
of the concert Bb scale,
Spirit of the Warrior
begins boldly. Separated
notes in the low brass
and winds represent the
warrior’s power.
Nature’s inspiring
beauty is represented by
the high woodwinds and
bells, which play in
counterpoint to the lower
instruments. Fully
separate the staccatos,
and shape the accents
throughout to help the
music feel powerful
without being overly
heavy or loud. At m. 29,
be sure that the
countermelody played by
the clarinets and alto
saxophone can be clearly
heard.If you have
additional
percussionists, consider
doubling the snare drum
part on a low tom-tom.
Experiment with the gong
to find the sound you
prefer: strike closer to
the edge for a brash
“crash” sound, or
closer to the center for
a more mysterious tone.
The piece ends with the
sound of the sustaining
gong . Enjoy the drama
and let the sound fade
without (much)
dampening. . $7.00 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks

director. Monica is a
former student and
graciously asked me to
write this for her band.
I aimed to take this
traditional Shaker song
and add modern harmonies,
rhythms, and
instrumentation.With that
in mind, the introduction
is similar to the lyrical
setting of the original.
Measure 5 creates a
lively rhythmic motive
for the ensemble where
the members should match
note lengths and style.
Be sure that the clarinet
and saxophone are the
predominant motives at m.
18 so the melody can be
fully realized. At mm. 26
and 38, be sure that the
rhythmic accompaniment
does not overpower the
melody and that they
adhere to all
articulations. Finally,
the marking forte-piano
followed by a crescendo
at m. 53 is critical for
the final musical push to
the end of the piece.I

1950s, he was a pioneer
in the field of public
school instrumental music
in Baltimore City. He was
my mentor and my dear
friend. It was his
guidance and
encouragement that set my
young life's course on
the path of music.
Performance Notes The
idea for Ghost Chasers is
to have a spooky tune (m.
9, Trumpets) chasing
around in simple
counterpoint between two
sections. (See m. 19).
Students will find the
independent part playing
both challenging and fun.
In the contrasting
section at m. 30, young
students will gain
experience in changing
their articulation from
marcato to legato.
Obeying the cues for low
brass in this section is
recommended, but
depending on the
instrumentation of the
band, directors may
disregard the cues if
necessary. Directors may
also wish to take the
opportunity to teach a
lesson about major and
minor keys and discuss
why the tune at m. 9
sounds spooky and the
theme at m. 30 sound
lighthearted. Overall,
the main challenge for
this piece is balance.
For the chaser idea to be
effective the
half-measure lag between
the two sections playing
the same tune must be
easily heard. Even more
attention to balance must
be paid at m. 45, where
the spooky theme is added
to the chasing theme. If
Clarinets can play
third-line written D, use
it instead of the
alternate cued note. If
three Timpani are not
available, omit the note

680160919949. A new
day. A new event. A new
opportunity. We look
forward to these things
and the potential they
hold. We live our lives
looking forward, but we
understand them looking
backward (a thought of
Danish philosopher Soren
Kierkegaard). We do not
always know what the
future may hold, but we
must remember: first,
there are no guarantees
beyond the time and
opportunity we are given
to do good. Second,
change around us is
inevitable. Finally, and
the most important
aspect, we have choices.
This lesson is fixed to
the composer's office
door: Today is the
greatest day of your
life, if you want it to
be. Why not look forward
to the Promise on the
Horizon and the
possibilities for
greatness that lie within
it? The opening motif of
this concert fanfare is
purposely inquisitive as
the piece seeks to
establish its first
steps. The subtle shift
at measure 37 and again
at measure 69 are
reminders of the
challenges that await us
during the journey. Here
again it is a matter of
choice - do we choose to
let circumstances define
us, or do we define the
circumstances? The
section at 93 is a
resounding answer that we
will move barriers,
overcome obstacles and
keep our vision looking
forward. The piece builds
toward an exciting
conclusion from measure
127 onward. The piece
reinforces several basic
rhythmic patterns in 6/8
time. As a number of
these rhythms are
repeated, it provides an
easy opportunity for the
entire ensemble to grow
more comfortable
performing in this meter.
While it is a
fanfare-type piece,
remind young musicians to
play with lightness and
precision, rather than
intensity in volume.
Maintaining this style of
articulation and accuracy
helps the rhythms in 6/8
time maintain their
buoyancy. It is vital
that each musician
listens for the melody
and balances their part,
especially in moments
where the melody is
passed between sections.
If vibes are not
available, a second bell
set can be employed in
its place. It is hoped
that this piece is an
uplifting way to open
your next concert, and a
meaningful opportunity
for you to discuss the
power of making positive
choices with your
students in the ensemble
(as a reminder, regular
practicing of their
instrument is a positive
choice). Wishing you and
your ensemble well as you
look to the Promise on
the Horizon. A new
day. A new event. A new

29. Trio 37-56 Stays
unmodulated in the same

before the start of the

this section controlled
and be sensitive to the
balance; the metallic
timbre of the muted
trumpet/cornet needs to
be heard clearly (might
suggest to bring the
dynamic level up to mf
when muted); if
cued-notes are played,
make sure they are played
throughout the melodic
phrase as written to
avoid awkward leaps.

Excerpt from Rasa Sayang
with some play in

the final strain. Final
Strain 63-82 Back to Eb

the Trio theme;
festive-like style with
fuller orchestration and
new countermelodies;
dotted rhythm motif from
the introduction
concludes the march in a
codetta-like section from
m. 79. NOTE TO THE
CONDUCTOR This march has
been carefully written
with reasonable
technicalities and range
in mind for younger
players. Generally,
optional cued notes in
parenthesis are given for
less experienced players
who have yet to develop
their range on the
instrument. However, they
should never be taken as
an easy alternative for
all players in the
section; otherwise, this
may result in a less than
ideal flow of the musical
lines. Marches are good
tools to train tempo
consistency, articulation
and rhythmic precision as
well as musical phrasing.
I hope that there will be
great learning
opportunities for your
students as they learn
this piece. This march is
separately orchestrated
for both wind and brass
bands to maximize the
instrumental colors
within each ensemble. The
parts are therefore not
exchangeable between the
wind band and brass band
sets. I wish you the best
in the performance of
this work. - Benjamin

section; otherwise, this
may result in a less than
ideal flow of the musical
lines. Marches are good
tools to train tempo
consistency, articulation

Yeo. ABOUT THE
MUSICFuture of Tomorrow
(Concert March) was
commissioned by the Arts
Education Branch,
Ministry of Education as
the set piece for the
Singapore Youth Festival
2016 Arts Presentation
for Concert and Brass
Bands (Primary Level).
This march uses brief
excerpts from the
well-known Malay folk
songs Katak Lompat and
Rasa Sayang.Our youths
are indeed our future of
tomorrow. This
joyful-themed march aims
to bring out the best in
each of your young
players. I hope that
students, band directors
and audiences will enjoy
preparing, performing and
listening to this
work.EDUCATIONAL
NOTESKey: Eb

SUGGESTIONSIntroduction1-
4Opens in Eb major with
dotted rhythm motif.1st
Strain5-20Take note of
melodic phrasing above
the (light) oom-pah
ostinato;melody repeats
at m. 13 with the
addition of countermelody
in the inner lines;
although written at mf
dynamic, this ‘new
idea’ needs to be heard
clearly for contrast with
the previous
statement.2nd
Strain21-36C minor
(relative minor); excerpt
from Katak Lompat; melody
in the lower brass/wind
from m. 21 with a
contrasting
attitude/style from 1st
strain; back to a more
lyrical treatment from m.
29.Trio37-56Stays
unmodulated in the same
key; opens with a
percussion solo feature
before the start of the
softer Trio theme; keep
this section controlled
and be sensitive to the
balance; the metallic
timbre of the muted
trumpet/cornet needs to
be heard clearly (might
suggest to bring the
dynamic level up to mf
when muted); if
cued-notes are played,
make sure they are played
throughout the melodic
phrase as written to
avoid awkward leaps.Break
Strain57-62Excerpt from
Rasa Sayang with some
play in tonality and
instrumental dialogue;
quasi grandioso-style
before the final
strain.Final
Strain63-82Back to Eb
major with the reprise of
the Trio theme;
festive-like style with
fuller orchestration and
new countermelodies;
dotted rhythm motif from
the introduction
concludes the march in a
codetta-like section from
m. 79.NOTE TO THE
CONDUCTORThis march has
been carefully written
with reasonable
technicalities and range
in mind for younger
players. Generally,
optional cued notes in
parenthesis are given for
less experienced players
who have yet to develop
their range on the
instrument. However, they
should never be taken as
an easy alternative for
all players in the
section; otherwise, this
may result in a less than
ideal flow of the musical
lines. Marches are good
tools to train tempo
consistency, articulation
and rhythmic precision as
well as musical phrasing.
I hope that there will be
great learning
opportunities for your
students as they learn
this piece.This march is

the Roman god of
financial gain, commerce,
travelers, boundaries,
luck, trickery,
merchants, and thieves. A
popular deity in Roman
culture, he was instantly
recognized by his unique
winged shoes (talaria)
and hat (petasos). With
its close proximity to
the sun and faster orbit
than all other planets,
the Romans named this
small celestial body
after the swift-winged
messenger of their
culture. It is not
surprising that in
Holst's major orchestral
suite The Planets that
Mercury utilizes such
light and swift themes.
There is some duality to
the title of the work.
Part of it involves my
impression of what a
playful chase of the
winged messenger sounds
like. The other part is
the opening motif chasing
two themes of Holst
around the rest of the
work. It was only after
developing the first few
ideas that I recognized
some of the commonalities
with some of those same
themes from Holst's
orchestral work. There
are several quotations
from that famous piece by
Holst (notably as both
are stated successively
at mm. 13-20). The idea
of someone having to
chase the Winged
Messenger struck me as a
unique title around which
to craft a work. One of
my core beliefs about
music is that it can be
imbued with meaning by a
composer, and as the
sonic story unfolds an
ensemble, director, and
audience members can draw
out their own meaning
from the experience. Who
exactly is chasing
Mercury? I leave that up
to the wonderfully
creative minds of the
young ladies and
gentlemen who have the
opportunity to bring this
work to life. The
opportunity to compose
music and allow student
musicians to give this
piece new life and draw
out different meanings is
a humbling experience.
Rehearsal Notes and
Suggestions As stated
earlier, the opening
motif (a range of a
seventh) comes back
frequently in the work in
a variety of settings and
textures. Throughout the
work, it is important for
students to recognize the
two themes from Holst
when they are present in
the sound canvas. If the
solos (clarinet and alto
saxophone) are utilized,
the supporting parts
around and underneath
those lines must be
sensitive and play in
such a way to properly
balance those parts.
There are number of muted
sections for the trumpet
section, and I would
advocate for all trumpets
acquiring the same mute
to contribute to unity in
timbre. The bold fanfare
sections (the first
occurs at m. 37) must be
presented with a unified
articulation style. As
the texture intensifies
prior to m. 169, it is
crucial for the ensemble
to play within themselves
and exercise musical
courtesy to allow all
voices to be heard as
they arrive at m. 181. My
thanks in advance for
your support of this
music, and I wish you
well as you and your
ensemble begin Chasing

Cloud is a rhapsodic
concert piece based on
two sea shanties, Heart
of Gold and The Lily of
the West. The piece has
dramatic shifts in
orchestration and
colorful harmonies that
are reminiscent of
standards in the band
repertoire. This is a
wonderful teaching piece
for young bands. $11.00 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks

680160920457. Clash
of the Warriors is
lightly based upon the
Bulgarian folk song Kaval
Sviri. The composer's
vision was to create a
musical depiction of two
warriors getting ready
and ultimately battling
each other. The
introduction should be
mysterious and ominous.
To create the open fifth
interval slide effect,
the trombone glissandi in
measures 2-3 should be
emphasized, and the
suggested slide positions
followed. At Rehearsal
10, the timpani, marimba,
and tambourine will
control the pulse and
diminuendo to Rehearsal
18, where the woodwinds
have the melody.
Rehearsal 38 should be
bold and energetic,
whereas Rehearsal 57
should be light with a
driving pulse. The
Rehearsal 92 9/8 section
should be conducted in
four (2+2+2+3) and set up
the warrior's battle
clash. Rehearsal 109
represents the 'clash' of
the warriors where they
will ultimately battle
against one another,
represented by the three
measure motivic
tradeoffs. Finally,
rehearsal 129 to the end
is the soundtrack for the
final conflict for the
warriors. I hope you and
your ensemble enjoy
performing Clash of the
