The Four Hymns are in similar vein to the Five Mystical Songs (1911) although on a smaller and more intimate scale. Together with the Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis these form a succession of works displaying a strong mystical, meditative content. The first of the hymns, 'Lord! come away!', employs vigorous Purcellian recitative in a setting of a Palm Sunday text from Bishop Jeremy Taylor's Golden Grove (17th century). 'Who is this fair one?' (Isaac Watts, 1674-1748) is a dialogue for the tenor and viola about divine love. As described by Christopher Palmer, 'Come Love, come Lord' (Richard Crashaw, c1613-49) 'breathes that spirit of mystical remoteness later to inform A Pastoral Symphony?. The final 'Evening Hymn' is a radiant setting of a translation from pre-4th century Greek by Robert Bridges, notable for its contrapuntal expertise over a bell-like basso ostinato.Four Hymns is also available in the version for tenor, viola and piano (979-0-060-02852-6), and the score (978-0-85162-908-7) serves as the vocal score for use with the orchestral version. However, the solo viola part of the orchestral version is incompatible with that for the piano version.Suitable for advanced standard performers. / Partie De Violon Alto Solo

Dramaphonia for Piano solo and Chamber Ensemble was composed by Poul Ruders in 1...(+)
Dramaphonia for Piano solo and Chamber Ensemble was composed by Poul Ruders in 1987. First part of 'Drama Trilogy'. Commissioned by and dedicated to Poul Rosenbaum and Lontano. Programme note: 'Dramaphonia' for Piano solo and 11 instruments forms the first part of a trilogy of solo-concertos the remaining two being one for percussion and smaller symphony orchestra ('Monodrama') and the last ('Polydrama') for violoncello and full orchestra. All three pieces are in one movement each and may be performed together thus presenting a vast 'concerto grosso' of the duration of ninety minutes. Each concerto however standsby itself offering its own story: having employed the word 'drama' in all three pieces I naturally want to imply that something is 'going on' a series of hidden events created by each listener’s own 'inner theatre' which enables him to stage his own personal associations and in the case of 'Dramaphonia' the compositorical tension alters between action and frozen panoramas. In the percussion concerto the rhythmical progression is being constantly intensified whereas the metric proportions of Dramaphonia tighten and loosen like a magnifying glass being wielded in and out of focus. ACTIONS INTERPOLATIONS AND ANALYSES symphonies for bass-clarinet and large ens...(+)
ACTIONS INTERPOLATIONS AND ANALYSES symphonies for bass-clarinet and large ensemble (1987-90) is what is commonly termed a work in progress. So far Schaathun has completed three of five parts. The is the composer's first large-scale attempt to investigate possible connections between ostensibly unrelated material. Explained in simple terms it involves taking two of Schaathun's 'own' type of texture (composed by means of different techniques) and letting them 'rotate' around a familiar musical object (in this case a short excerpt from Stravinskij's Symphonies of Wind instruments in which he employs the famous 'frozen' chords). In the course of thepiece the elements takes over various characteristics from one another and the form progresses from fairly clear-cut textures to a situation where the various textures are superimposed creating a dramatic flow. On a more advanced level the piece is about trying to mediate between different musical textures as metaphors for the different levels of the sound itself. One of the main questions in this context is; What is size in music? Is it possible to take a small chord(i.e. narrow register few instruments simple tone colours) and then blow it up (wide register many instruments advanced mixtures) in such a way that the listener still perceives it as the same chord? You have simply moved closer to the sound. At any rate when Schaathun composed the piece he himself travellig into the sound as if were viewing a texture from a distance. He then recomposed the same situation and drew closer and then recompose it a third time and simply get close enough to discover the world of sounds that thus emerged. A world of sounds capable of travelling at a tremendous speed... However like all concertos the piece is of course about the individual and his relationship to his surroundings (society). Schaathun has often pondered on the reason for this preoccupation wih solo concertos. The answer derives from his firm conviction that

Gustav Mahler's symphonies tend to be scored for a large orchestra putting this wonderful music out of reach of many smaller orchestras. This arrangement whilst not simplifying the music attempts to remedy this by reducing the orchestral requirements. The original orchestration requires 3 flutes 3 oboes 3 clarinets 3 bassoons 7 horns 4 trumpets 3 trombones tuba timpani percussion and strings. Although in many of Mahler's symphonies each movement seems to be an integral part of the larger work we feel that this movement can stand alone quite happily and offers a good entry to the symphonic world of Gustav Mahler.

Sonata C Major K. 309

Piano Sonata C major K. 309 (284b) Editor: Ernst Herttrich Fingering: Hans-Mart...(+)
Piano Sonata C major K. 309 (284b) Editor: Ernst Herttrich Fingering: Hans-Martin Theopold I wish to do it to reflect the character of Mad:selle Rose, Mozart replied when asked how he intended to set out the Andante of his Sonata in C major. In autumn 1777 he had got to know Rosina Cannabich in Mannheim and during her lessons immediately introduced her to the Sonata K. 309 that he had composed for her. Indeed, in December 1777 according to her teacher she was already able to perform it excellently. So that a great many other pupils might follow in her footsteps, we are now publishing this small gem that shows Mozartâs great skill in composing for the piano as a single edition with a new preface by the editor; it was previously only available in the complete volumes (HN 1 and 3). FIRST MOVEMENT The first movement of the C major Sonata K 309 is a model teaching sonata form structure. With sonata forms, as with Bach fugues, no formal dogmas underlie the process of composition, but each sonata varies anew a basic principle. For Mozart, this entailed strict adherence to certain fundamental patterns without his creative freedom. In his sonata movements in major keys, for example he favoured a distinct second subject in the dominant as most contemporary composers did. Haydn, on the other hand, reveled in experiment at this point. A brief analysis may help to demonstrate Mozart's standard sonata allegro form and the first movement of it is an ideal example for such an investigation. The first subject is a distinctive, marcato opening followed by a five-bar response. The falling fourth and rising sixth of the opening is one of Mozart's favourite motifs, his common melodic device. He often uses it in the minor as well as the major, and many of his themes start with this motif (e.g. the second movement of the A major Sonata K 331, the Adagio in B minor K 540, and subjects in the Symphonies K 114, 124, 319/II and 551/II). The seven measures of the main theme are repeated, slightly varied. Measures 15 to 21 conclude the first subject group with an answering phrase (3+3 bars). The transition consists of new material and then, in measure 35 (after two measures of preparation comes a second cantabile theme, in the dominant (G major) comprising 2x4 bars, which is also repeated and proceeds to a spirited closing theme (concluding group) using passage-work (m. 43) and incorporating a delightful diminuation of measures 35 36 in measure 45. The exposition ends with a codetta of five bars. The development presents the opening motif first in g minor, and then the various ideas of the first subject are worked out. With this procedure Mozart is keeping much more closely to textbook principles than he usually does. Two further statements of the opening motif lead back to the recapitulation in measure 94. The second subject, now in the tonic, has surprisingly changed place with its accompaniment. The opening is recalled again in an effectively assertive coda. SECOND MOVEMENT The second movement of this sonata is an introspective Andante un poco adagio. In a letter Mozart stated his desire to make this Andante match the character of the young pianist Rosa Cannabich for whom he wrote it: ...she is a sweet, pretty girl, just like the andante. For her age she is sensible and level-headed; she is serious, and doesn't talk too much, though what she says is pleasing and sympathetic. THIRD MOVEMENT An elegant and smoothly flowing Rondo of unusually large proportions concludes this Sonata. Paul and Eva Badura-Skoda

Par AHO KALEVI. Kalevi Aho's (b. 1949) concerto no. 2 for cello and orchestra (2013) is in five movements performed without a break. It begins with a swinging Berceuse, followed by a very quick, virtuosic Presto in 5/8 time. The heart of the concerto is the cadenza-like third movement, Adagio, dominated throughout by the soloist. A fairly short Allegretto is followed by the closing Epilogue. This has flashbacks to the opening movement, and they lead to a cadenza in which the soloist plays only flageolet notes and pizzicatos. The concerto ends with a virtuosic coda in 5/8 time evocative of the second movement. Arto Noras gave the concerto its first performance with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä in Naantali on June 5, 2014. It was a joint commission from the Naantali Music Festival and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. This product consists of the solo part (18 pages) and piano reduction by Kari Vehmanen (62 pages) - have a look inside by clicking “sample”. The concerto is scored for a fairly small orchestra. The instrumentation is 2(II=afl)2(II=ca)2(II=bcl)2-2200-bar-02-str and the orchestral material is available for hire from the publisher. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896). Par BRUCKNER ANTON / DOSS THOMAS (Arr.). Anton Bruck...(+)
Anton Bruckner (1824-1896). Par BRUCKNER ANTON / DOSS THOMAS (Arr.). Anton Bruckner (b. 4.9.1824, Ansfelden, d. 11.10.1896, Vienna) didn?t have it easy. Throughout his life, the Austrian composer was plagued by self-doubt. Anton Bruckner came from a simple, rural background. After the death of his father, he was accepted as a choirboy at the monastery of Sankt Florian in 1837. After several years as a school assistant and his own organ and piano studies, he first worked as organist in St. Florian, then from 1855 as cathedral organist in Linz. Introduced to music theory and instrumentation by Simon Sechter and Otto Kitzler, he discovered Richard Wagner as an artistic role model, whom he admired throughout his life and also visited several times in Bayreuth. In 1868 Anton Bruckner became professor of basso continuo, counterpoint and organ at the Vienna Conservatory; ten years later court organist; and in 1891 finally honorary doctor of the University of Vienna. He was considered an important organ virtuoso of his era, but had to wait a long time for recognition as a composer. It was not until Symphony No.7 in E major, composed between 1881 and 1883, with the famous Adagio written under the effects of Wagner's death, that he achieved the recognition he had hoped for, even if he was reluctant to accept it given his inclination towards scepticism and self-criticism. Anton Bruckner was a loner who did not want to follow a particular school or doctrine. He composed numerous sacred vocal works, such as his three masses, the Missa Solemnis in B flat minor (1854), the Te Deum (1881-84) and numerous motets. As a symphonic composer, he wrote a total of nine symphonies and many symphonic studies from 1863 onwards, tending to revise completed versions several times over. Bruckner's orchestral works were long considered unplayable, but in fact were merely exceptionally bold for the tonal language of their time, uniting traditions from Beethoven through Wagner to folk music, on the threshold between late Romanticism and Modernism. Hymns for four-part mixed choir a cappella (1846, St. Florian) No. 1 in E flat major (WAB 41/3): Quite Slow No. 2 in C major (WAB 41/4): Andante No. 3 in B flat major (WAB 41/1): Slow No. 4 in A flat major (WAB 41/2): Slow Hymn for five-part (2 S, A, T, B) mixed choir and organ No. 5 in D major: Solemnly They are simple works, completely subordinate to their liturgical use, which nevertheless already show numerous characteristics of personal expression. These small pieces were able to stand up to the harsh scrutiny of the mature master: in 1888, Bruckner subjected them to a revision in which he made only minor corrections. / Date parution : 2023-08-12/ Répertoire / Concert Band/Harmonie

Opera-Poul Ruders' opera Tycho in 3 Acts was premiered May 15 1987 by Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and Kaare Hansen (conductor) at Helsingør Theater in Aarhus Denmark. Libretto in Danish by Henrik Bjelke. Full score: WH31457 Synopsis: In 1597 the famous Danish astronomer and astrologist the nobleman Tycho Brahe flees his castle cum observatory Uraniburg on one of the small islands off the Danish coast. The newly coronated King Christian the Fourth has a grudge against Tycho who in 1572 discovered a new star Stella Nova by using his naked eye only; the telescopewasn’t invented yet. This discovery gained Tycho tremendous fame among his contemporaries within the European scientific circles. The now weakened and embittered old man moves together with his wife Christina whom he raped when she was an adolescent and Jeppe the Dwarf his fool-servant whose life Tycho once saved to the plague-infested city of Prague. There at the Benatky Castle Tycho encounters the main reason for his departure from Denmark: the young German mathematician Johannes Kepler the only scientist among his contemporaries Tycho acknowledges - Tycho is in severe need of intelligent challenge. Which he gets and with a disastrous result for himself. The encouraging encounter with Kepler turns into Tycho's scientific and earthly death verdict. Slowly Tycho realizes that his own conception of the Earth as the indisputable axes of the Universe is shattered by Kepler s theory about Earth encircling the stationary Sun. The ancient picture of the Universe collapses Tycho feels deceived by Kepler who leaves the castle shaken by Tycho's wrath. But they meet again and reunite in a Romanza a Due at Tycho’s death bed. The opera hovers above immense sadness and extreme ridicule - the cast is most peculiar indeed - so in many ways 'TYCHO' may be described at the best as a 'Tragic Operetta'

Full score for this work for Guitar and Small Ensemble. Ruders writes: The word has its origin in ancient Greek: Psalmoidia i.e. ?singing to the harp? and we find the word again in Psalter derived from Psallein ?playing the strings with the fingers?. 'Psalmodies' written for and dedicated to David Starobin has no specific religious content or aim; the collection of eleven pieces forms a concert-suite displaying a wide range of emotions; from the jubilant to the dismal the guitar playing the natural leading part ?inside? a chorus of woodwinds and strings. The title and each movement mirrors the variety of moods from the secular feast of A Fanfare for All to the sacredintroversion of A Prayer with Halo. 'Psalmodies' opens with a guitar-solo and closes down with one: the rejoicing Entrance for One and the hushed melancholy Exit for One thus exemplifying the emotional compass which I in an essay on my first symphony; ?Himmelhoch Jauchsend-zum Tode betrübt? entitle: Of Joy and Grief. Of Worship and Oblivion.

Quoting Burgon: My first thought on receiving this commission was what sort of text would suit. Something on the general idea of growth - starting very small and blossoming was the obvious way to go but it wasn’t until I foundthe Andrew Marvell poem Music’s Empire that I really got going. The poem is about the invention and development of music; this might sound a bit dry but in fact it is both charming and dramatic and it is also apt in that it canbe set for both solo voice and chorus. The other factor to be considered in writing this piece was the Purcell connection. Purcell wrote Come Ye Sons of Art in 1964 the year the bank was founded and this piece is alsoincluded in the celebratory concert. So I wanted to include some homage to HP as well.Marvell’s poem is the sort of text that Purcell might have set had he come across it. It is a sort of Ode of text that Purcell might haveset had he come across it. It is a sort of Ode to St Cecelia and he wrote one of those as we know. So I have referred to Purcell in two particular ways; I have quoted Come Ye sons of Art directly and I have used thecountertenor. Purcell himself sang countertenor in many of his own pieces and wrote some of the most gorgeous music ever written for that voice. I also happened to love both Purcell’s music and the countertenor so writing thispiece was really a labour of love.It is scored for countertenor mixed chorus and symphony of orchestra - rather larger than any orchestra that Purcell had access to as far as I know but one in which I’m sure he would haverevelled in given the opportunity. It is about ten minutes in duration.

Chinesische Lieder. Par PENDERECKI KRZYSZTOF. The history of the symphony is full of curiosities, ranging from works that are extremely long or scored for extensive instrumental forces to those of dubious authorship. There are also famous symphonies labelled as No. 0, works with alternate or multiple opus numbers, and a wealth of ‘unfinished’ symphonies. Krzysztof Penderecki’s 6. Sinfonie can also be included in this category, since his Seventh and Eighth were completed decades ago.
This work is comprised of eight songs on Chinese texts connected by solo intermezzos played on the Chinese stringed instrument, erhu. As in his two preceding works, the focus here is on vowels. This work, however, is scored for smaller orchestral forces and possesses a more intimate chamber music character, at times with greater melancholy than before. Penderecki has declared this symphony to be his farewell from the genre, although we know from experience that anything is possible with symphonies./ Répertoire / Baryton et Orchestre

Critical Complete Edition Of The Works Of Miloslav Kabelác V/13. Par KABELAC MILOSLAV. The four small-scale preludes of Miloslav Kabelác's op. 48 were commissioned in 1966 by the second 'Prague Spring International Music Competition” in the category organ.
They are written in proportional notation, which the composer preferred ever since his Symphony No. VI of 1961. For practical reasons one of the editors, the leading Czech organist and Kabelác authority Jan Hora, has transcribed the graphic notation of the note-values into standard notation. The original musical text appears in a complete reproduction of the first edition of 1966, along with examples in facsimile./ Répertoire / Orgue
