For many years the manuscript of 'Déjà vu' slumbered in the music library of oboist Hansjörg Schellenberger (former solo oboist of the Berlin Philharmonic) before it was rediscovered last year. Ulrich Stranz composed this solo work for Oboe d'amore, the alto instrument in the oboe family, at the end of his student years in 1974 as the nucleus of his later identically named concert piece (BA06292-72). The underlying idea of this work is a magic square, known in China as Lu Shu. In 1553, it was named Sigillum Saturni (Seal of Saturn) by the philosopher of religion Agrippa von Nettelsheim, who assigned a magic square to each planet. It is an arrangement of the numbers 1-9 in a grid such that the numbers in all rows, all columns, and both diagonals equal the same constant, which looks like a symbol: 4 9 2 3 5 7 8 1 6 This three-part composition has a short, freely rhythmical introduction, followed by a variation-like middle section. The changes in this section are a result of constantly changing bars, based on the magical square, which evoke a kind of dance. It culminates in the main section, Danse supplemented by sleigh bells, attached to the legs of the soloist, which with raising effects demand more and more extraordinary abilities to the end. The work is dedicated to Professor Christian Schneider and Heike Steinbrecher, principal Cor Anglas of the Bavarian State Opera, who played the first performance. There is use of extended technique in this work, and a chart is provided for instructions. This edition is appropriate for solo oboe, solo English horn, or solo oboe d'amore.

24 Pieces For Piano. Par WOLF PETER E.. Péter Wolf (a doctoral graduate of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest) has composed a number of large-scale compositions in recent years which have had success at the hands of distinguished performers: these include two piano concertos as well as concertos for oboe, clarinet, and violin. By entitling his newest set of pieces for piano Wolf-temperiertes Klavier, the composer was able to simultaneously indulge in wordplay based upon his surname and give a tip of the hat to German baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach. The work's likeness to Bach is not limited to its title - the manner in which a piece has been written in both major and minor keys for each tone of the chromatic scale is blatantly inspired by Bach. In the preface to this publication, Wolf offers the following insights: ''I think I managed to find expressive titles. The first piece, Epiclesis (a prayer for inspiration, patience, and support), was heard from above: I was able to work continuously and without inhibitions. The works could be born in every key, until the last one, the Epilogue, was completed. When I finally finished inscribing the pitches of Bach's name, I admit, a little shiver went through me.'' Of the character pieces, all were completely new with the exceptions of one being previously written and another whose theme Wolf borrowed from one of his own stage works. Employing a reduced orchestra (two oboes, four horns, two percussionists and two harps and strings), the work sets verse by three major poets who spent formative years in Granada- two Hebrew poets of mid-11th century, Samuel HaNagid and Solomon Ibn Gabirol (sung by solo countertenor in English versions by Peter Cole), and Gabriel Garcia Lorca (sung by the female chorus in the original Spanish). Kurt Weill developed his creative energies mainly within the world of musical theater, where he proved to be an immensely productive and imaginative innovator, but he also left behind a small body of work for the concert hall. The Concerto for Violin and Wind Orchestra op. 12 dates from the spring of 1924. Scored for two flutes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, one oboe and trumpet, percussion and four contrabasses, the concerto comprises three movements. While composing the work, Weill informed his publisher: 'I am working on a concerto for violin and wind orchestra that I hope to finish within two or three weeks. The work is inspired by the idea - one never carried out before - of juxtaposing a single violin with a chorus of winds.'
The specific character of Weill's concerto as music written for chamber orchestra (with an often soloistic treatment of instruments) leads to a transparency that requires utmost precision in the ensemble playing. In the quest for an overall sonic balance, the coarser-sounding wind instruments need to explore all dynamic nuances. The solo part is challenging not only from a technical standpoint but also from an acoustic one (it is crucial to make the violin 'sound'). In spite of these challenges - or precisely because of them - critics in the 1920s called the solo part highly idiomatic and extremely rewarding. The edition of the 'Concerto da Camera' shows, for the first time, the extend of Martinu's modifications to the work since its composition and publication, particularly on the solo violin part. The edition of the 'Rhapsody-Concerto” takes into account, among others, the discovery of previously unknown contemporary performance materials.

With the passage of time, the seasons that pass, the differences in quantity and quality of light, of temperature and weather, become of ever greater importance in the meaning of our individual existence. This transformation follows the path of our lives and often mimes in front of our very own eyes, incredulous and wondrous, events that we can only experience once in a lifetime: our birth, our blossoming, our aging and our death. Such a subject could well take up ten years of my life. This was the case. Nevertheless, everything started very innocently with a proposition from my friend François Leleux to write him a double concerto that he could play with Natalia Gutman, initially named ‘Musica Concertante’. It was with this second proposition from François for another double concerto, this time with Lisa Batiashvili, that the idea came to me for a cycle of four concertos with, each time, a different instrument from the string quartet to join the oboe. The automnal colours of the cello are a perfect match for the retrospective nature of the first completed concerto in the cycle. ‘concerto nostalgico, l’automne’, whilst the love and the first child of the Leleux-Batiashvili couple could only bring Spring to mind, hence the ‘Concerto amoroso, le printemps’, was born. When Jean-Marc Bador asked me to be an associate of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris for two years, it was quite naturally that I thought of completing this cycle for François Leleux, with winter ‘Concerto tenebroso’, created in January 2010 with Lise berthaud playing the viola. All that remained was for me to conclude, with a work that reunited all four protagonsits. It was summer, the ‘Concerto luminoso’, which took on this role’./ Répertoire / Orchestre

There is no reference to the origin, occasion or a performance of the Sinfonia concertante in E-flat for Violin, Viola and Orchestra, K. 364 (320d) because in all probability it was composed in Salzburg (presumably in summer or early autumn, 1779): Mozart seems to have had no reason to write about it. It was apparently in Paris that he first had the occasion of giving the genre of the ; Symphonie concertante his special attention. On April 5, 1778, he wrote to his father: ; Now I shall write a sinfonie concertante for flute wendling, oboe Ramm, Punto horn, and Ritter bassoon. Even more discouraging must have been the fact that he had similardifficulties in Paris in having the works performed as he had in Mannheim. After the organizier of the Concerts spirituels, Le Gros, contrary to his promise, did not include the mentioned ; sinfonie concertante in his program. Mozart had no reason to compose any more for this genre in Paris. After Mozart's return to Salzburg, he might have been eager to introduce the new genre there, especially since adequate instrumentalists were available. It contains two festive compositions written for the inauguration of the Akademische Gymnasium in 1744, one piece composed for the centennial of the Absolute and Hereditary Monarchy Act in Denmark (1760), one Latin ode to the King of Denmark for a school festivity in Altona, and an excerpt of two arias - the only surviving part of the music composed for the inauguration of Elias Caspar Reichard as Professor of Eloquence and Poetry at the Akademische Gymnasium (1741).
The edition was prepared on the basis of the known sources held at the Brussels Conservatory Library, new manuscripts contained in a rediscovered anthology of the Hamburg State Library including those previously unknown compositions, as well as printed texts which had not been considered to date from the Royal Library in Copenhagen.
The Foreword provides information regarding Telemann's tenure in Altona. Also included is a catalogue of all related works. Today the Gloria RV 589 (BA 7674) is one of Vivaldi's best-known compositions and one of the most frequently performed sacred vocal works from the Baroque period. Vivaldi wrote the ; Gloria as a self-contained work in the style of a concertante mass. However, it was probably also performed within church services. The scoring of the solo voices (SSA) suggests that the work was written during his period at the Ospedale della Pietà, around 1716. In the twelve movements of the ; Gloria, Vivaldi displays the whole range of his mastery from festive, sublime outer movements to tender, transparently scored solo passages. Thesame mastery has also been applied to the ; Kyrie RV 587 (BA 8950), scored for two choirs and two groups of stringed instruments. The date of its composition remains unclear. It is a purely a choral work without solo passages. Both works can be performed independently but can also be combined as a kind of short mass. Although the authenticity of the autograph manuscript score is beyond doubt, these new editions contain some re-evaluations in phrasing and performance practice which go beyond what other editions have to offer. Keyboard fireworksAs early as 1743, while Handel was still alive, Francesco Geminiani produced an arrangement of the 'Water Music? for keyboard instruments, thereby making it possible to perform this popular work in domestic surroundings. Then, presumably in 1749, an unknown musician arranged the 'Music for the Royal Fireworks? for transverse flute or violin and harpsichord.In addition to these two contemporary versions, this edition also contains an arrangement by the editor for harpsichord or organ, based on the first edition. The Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition III/1/5. Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. “Incarnation” (1956), Bohuslav Martinu’s fourth piano concerto, follows an atypical two-movement structure. It was composed for Martinu’s friend Rudolf Firkušný, who played from a copy of the autograph until 1970, when the composition was first put into print. The next work, “Concerto in B flat major for Piano and Orchestra”, known under the name “Fantasia Concertante”, was to be Martinu’s very last concert work. The concerto in three movements, composed at the request of Swiss pianist Margrit Weber, is quite different from the previous work in terms of its compositional means. In this case, Martinu strongly influenced the edition of the work.
The present volume of the Complete Edition of works by Bohuslav Martinu is based mainly on contemporary copies containing the composer’s own modifications. The edition presents numerous new findings about the genesis of both works./ Recueil / Orchestre

Version 1. Par FELDMANN WALTER. «sexe-tuor» was originally a failed attempt to compose a solo oboe piece for my noyé cycle. For the solo the name 'le sexe du noyé' was intended, and the few measures of sexe-tuor were my first attempt to compose a piece in which more complex rhythms would result in a kind of proportional multiplication of individual fragments from the sextet [hence the French sextuor] le retour du noyé. This proved to be monstrously complicated and absurd. Thus, the ten measures of the «sexe-tuor» fragment represent a capitulation in the face of these complications, presented as the interruption of an immovable column of air in a frozen multiphonic sound. In the event, the solution to the problemwas quite simple: Beginning with the composition of le sexe du noyé the proportionalities of the pitch levels and rhythmic values revealed significant rhythmic possibilities. sexe-tuor remains as it is: a solo piece that can function in another compositional context, as an intermezzo between other, larger works on a concert program. Par HAENDEL GEORG FRIEDRICH. The episode from Ovid‘s “Metamorphoses” in which Daphne attempts to escape Apollo’s advances by turning into a laurel tree, causing the devastated god to weave a laurel crown in memory of the nymph, has inspired the masterworks of many artists. Gian Lorenzo Bernini, whose famous marble sculpture is housed in the Galleria Borghese in Rome, is only one example of this. Many composers set this myth to music including young George Frideric Handel with his grand-scale dramatic cantata “Apollo e Dafne”. The composer started working on the work shortly before leaving Italy in 1709, most likely finishing it the following year in Hanover.
Bärenreiter now presents a vocal score of the opera-like cantata, the highlights of which include Dafne’s aria “Felicissima quest’alma” (accompanied by solo oboe) and Apollo’s famous lament “Cara pianta”./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano
