The special occasion that Philip Sparke was honoured to write this piece for was the 200th anniversary of the Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen. Since Bad Säckingen is known as the ’Trompeterstadtâ� ��™, or trumpeter city, Sparke’s creative process was influenced by Joseph Victor Scheffel’s poem, Der Trompeter von Säckingen (The Trumpeter from Säckingen), which is based on a true story. The overture starts with a majestic fanfare, followed by a lively molto vivace. It is joined by a brilliant trumpet call in honour of the city’s famous resident.

Overt ure for a Special Occasion is geschreven in opdracht van Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen ter gelegenheid van het tweehonderdjarig bestaan van het orkest, in 2011. De première van het werk vond plaats in januari van dat jaar,onder leiding van Johannes Brenke, de dirigent van het orkest. Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen, uit de gelijknamige plaats in het zuidwesten van Duitsland, werd opgericht in 1811 en is daarmee een van de oudste blaasorkesten in de regio.Het stadje Bad Säckingen (Bad betekent badplaats) staat bekend als ‘Trompeterstadtâ� �™ en kan bogen op een trompetmuseum, dat in 1985 de deuren opende. Having been invited several times onto the jury of the prestigious Certamen Tarrega in Benicasim, I thought I would involve a few composers in a gift to the father of the modern guitar. So I asked the composers to write a Prelude of the kind that Tarrega wrote and which count among his most significant compositions.
These Preludes for Tarrega, all written between August and November 2015, are very different from each other. The common feature, however, between these and the Preludes by Tarrega is their brevity, an average level of performance difficulty and guaranteed easy listening, even when written in a non-tonal language (like the meditative and melancholy piece by Emilio Calandin and the one by Marco Smaili, with its Impressionistic feel reminding one of Tarrega's most famous pupil, Miguel Llobet).
In some Preludes (the ones by Paolo Ugoletti, Roberto Tagliamacco, Claudia Montero) the reference to Lagrima, one of Tarrega's most famous Preludes, is evident in form, title and some citations. Ugoletti and Tagliamacco work well and expressively on harmony and counterpoint, while the Argentinian Claudia Montero links Tarrega to a heartbreaking Buenos Aires...
In Alessandro Spazzoli there is rather more a connection with Tarrega's sense of melody and deep simplicity, while Marco Reghezza remembers ironically what was brewing in European music when Tarrega was alive: in fact, his Como Preludio goes across the 24 keys - and even a reference to Wagner's Tristan raises its head...
I am delighted for this volume to come out at the time of the fiftieth edition of the Certamen Tarrega.

Air Balloon!: One vivid memory I have as a child is of the day that a hot air balloon passed over our house and made an emergency landing on the road in front! The sound of the gas being blown into the balloon to try to keep it high enough to pass the house sounded so loud and intimidating, and then there was the bustle of the neighbours as we all went out into the street to watch. It was both terrifying and exhilarating to watch the balloon float past and then land so near by.

Buzzards Circling: There is something so calming and restful about watching birds of prey circling in the thermal currents of a summer sky. Growing up in the Chilterns gave me plenty of opportunity to watch buzzards and red kites. This piano solo captures the beauty of their flight as they glide so effortlessly through the air.

There’ s A Cow In The Garden Eating The Flowers: Inspired by the memory of seeing an unexpected cow in the garden! This surreal image is captured in a quirky waltz, as I portray both the absurdity of the moment and the sense of wonder I felt as a child, looking out of the window and seeing the cow walking round and eating the flowers. The final phrase articulates my longing: ‘I wish it would come again’.

Wat ching The World Go By: A short, reflective piece, remembering what it was like to have time to just sit and watch the world go by from my bedroom window.

Autumn Skies: A miniature about the beauty of Autumn skies and the poignant sense of loss for a summer gone. Friends I was fortunate to have several children of my own age living close by. We seemed to be forever making dens, playing out in the street and generally enjoying each other’s company. This piece reflects that sense of well-being.

Snake In The Pond: One hot summer I was astonished and scared to see a grass snake cooling off in our garden pond! I watched, both horrified and fascinated, as it rose up from the depths and then disappeared again. Here I portray the sense of the hazy summer afternoon as I peacefully watched the tiny movements of fish in the pond, contrasted with the fear and excitement of seeing the snake appear.

Morning Commute: I recollect many mornings stuck in traffic as my Dad took me to school on his way to work. There is one main road out of the village where I grew up, and that got more and more congested the closer we got to the town. We may not have chatted a lot, but it was always good to be together with my Dad, lost in our own thoughts.

The Witch’s Cottage: My siblings and I had a fascination with a small cottage nearby. It was set back from the road in a dark part of the woods and we called it 'the witch's cottage’. Every time we passed, I imagined I heard the distant cackle of the witch and wished I could catch a glimpse of her.

These pieces are written to complement my other collection, Night Time Impressions, which also draw on childhood recollections, particularly of the woods behind the house where I grew up. - Sarah Baker 2023.

The 48 Preludes by the Venetian composer Renato de Grandis (1927-2008) were composed, largely, between 1998-2002. It was only subsequently that he arranged them into 4 cycles of 12 preludes, drawing also from earlier compositions. Written in a traditional pianistic style, they are short sketches which are sometimes characterized by musical thoughts, sometimes by moods or by natural phenomena. The fourth volume presented here is once again divided into two cycles of 6 preludes each, with the first cycle paying tribute to the landscapes and towns of Friuli north of Venice.

Zoals de titel al zegt, bestaat deze muzikale collage uit kerstliedjes en wel Veni Emmanuel, Il est né le divin Enfant, Ding Dong! Merrily on High en In Dulci Jubilo. Hoewel het stuk is geschreven binnen een format voor graad 2 eenvoudig en voor flexibele bezetting wisselen de melodieën elkaar af en worden ze op ingenieuze wijze met elkaar gecombineerd. Het is een uitdagende medley vol verrassingen en speelplezier!

De muziek geeft een beschrijvingvan een winters tafereel op het land: een zonsondergang, sprookjesachtig besneeuwde landerijen en bossen. In de verte klinken de bellen van een slee die langzaam maar zeker naderbij komt. Maar dan keert de rust weer terug, terugin het verstilde landschap…

A Winter’s Tale hat keinen direkten Bezug zum Thema Weihnachten, kann also ebenso zu (vor-) weihnachtlichen Anlässen wie auch bei anderen Konzerten im Winterhalbjahr aufgeführt werden. Die Musik beschreibt eine Winterszenerie auf dem Lande: Ein stiller Sonnenuntergang, tief verschneite Felder und Wälder, von ferne klingen die Glöckchen eines Schlittens, der sich als Dreigespann entpuppt, bevor zum Schluss des Werkes wieder Ruhe in die Szenerie einkehrt.

Philip Sparke a composé cette pièce pour le Western Plains Wind Consortium, placé sous la direction de son fondateur, Daniel Baldwin. La création fut assurée par l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de l’Université d’État de l’Oklahoma Panhandle (Dr. Matthew C. Saunders, direction), le 1er décembre 2009, au Centennial Theatre Goodwell en Oklahama (États-Unis). Un passage orchestral court, mais dense, prélude l’exposition du thème principal. Les couleurs douces et vaporeuses enveloppent les champs et les forêts enneigés. L’orchestre reprend le thème tandis que l’on entend au loin un tintement de grelots annonçant le passage imminent d’une tro ka. Une fois passée, la musique s’apaise et le thème principal revient avant de laisser la place au motif d’ouverture qui vient conclure la trame musicale.
