The four orchestral scores which are brought together in Lemminkainen op. 22 can be understood with a bit of imagination as a kind of program symphony. All the more surprising is the Revision History that occurred after the first performances and versions in 1896 and 1897: Sibelius soon revised two pieces, the Swan of Tuonela (which was soon to become very popular) and Lemminkainen returns home (op. 22 no. 4). He had both scores printed, but stowed the two other pieces away in a drawer for nearly 40 years before he gave them their last polish. The entire cycle in its last authorized version was published in 1954, just as the composer wished. This happy ending is comprehensively documented in Volume I/12b of the Sibelius Complete Edition.

Recently I have again studied the poetry of Hermann Hesse, the most significant 'Maulbronnian'. His poems 'A Toccata from Bach' and 'Playing the Flute' inspired me to write the present piece. In 'Playing the Flute' he expressed his idea about the essence of music: It is 'time made aesthetically perceivable. And in the present, to be sure. And thus, once again, the identity of the moment and eternity come to mind.' The title of this piece is drawn from the last line of 'Playing the Flute.' (John Van Buren).

Composer and conductor Eugene Bozza (1905-1991) was a pupil of Henri Busser and Henri Rabaud at the Conservatoire de Paris, and received the first Prix de Rome in 1934. It was during his stay the Villa Medici that he wrote his Aria Pour Saxophone Alto Et Piano ? an adaptation of the third movement of Johan Sebastian Bach?s Organ Pastorale in F Major BWV 590, which was to tour the world. This nostalgia-imbued melody, which expands over a regular meter, has, in turn, been the subject of numerous transcriptions, first for clarinet, then for Violin (or Flute) and Piano. Editions Leduc have chosen to republish this last version, with the added bonus of an audio version that should be of valuable assistance to all musicians!.

In June 1997 I was in New York and had a free weekend. On Sunday morning I was awoken early by a great deal of banging and saw that barriers and roadblocks had been erected throughout Central Park. Why? I soon heard the answer: a great parade. When the Americans put together a parade they really mean it! This one lasted 3 hours and brought the center of New York to a standstill. Bands, dancers and choirs marched past in celebration of the Jewish faith. New York Parade is completely original but its starting point in my imagination was a marching band, a choir and Broadway. The marching band starts in the distance, passes by and as it moves away we hear the next block of performers singing, almost chanting, a hymn (called Jewish Song). The groups suddenly turn into Broadway, as a song from an imaginary show intervenes but then the band and choir return in counterpoint and all three themes come together.

Fictions and Folksongs mixes together fragments of traditional British folksongs with original material in a similar style. The music is full of strong melodies, with harmonies that are both evocative and inventive, and with rewarding parts for each player.
The first piece of the set, The Last Wicket, has a lively quality and a sparkle to it, with short melodic motifs passing between the instruments. This is followed by The Green Bed, in which each instrument takes it in turn to play a slow and beautiful melody. Finally comes On the Moorland, a more desolate and agitated piece that also includes contrasting passages of lighter music.

Whizzing, growling and rattling – you can produce all kinds of sounds with the harp, not just the fairy-tale shimmer and glissandos that you first think of. Lotta Wennäkoski composed Sigla for harp and orchestra (2021-2022) in close collaboration with the harpist Sivan Magen, to whom the concerto is dedicated. The title of the concerto, Sigla, has different meanings in different languages. In Italian, it means a jingle; in Icelandic, it means sailing; and in Tagalog, spoken in the Philippines, it means vivaciousness or enthusiasm. Wennäkoski has not specifically referenced these in the movements of the concerto as such, but she does allow that the various meanings of the word may be identified with the music according to the listener’s perception.

The recording of the work (Ondine ODE1420-2) was premiered with the Gramophone award as the the best release in the contemporary category in October 2023.

In Hans Albrahamsen's adaptation Bachs chorale gradually ernerges from two melodic fragments, both borrowed from the Danish composer Poul Ruders' Four Dances in One Movernent'. In fact both fragments are taken from the last three bars of Ruders' composition. One of Ruders' small melodies is descending, the other is ascending. The metamorphosis from Ruders to Bach can be accomplished because both of Ruders' melodic fragments are in fact 'hidden' among the parts of this Bach choraleinasmuch as the composer has transposed it into B minor. In the first verse we hear only the descending Ruders melody. In the secend verse Ruders' second, ascending and chrornatically coloured melody is added. In the subsequent verses more and more melodies are added. Thus the piece begins with Poul Ruders' melodic fragment in the foreground. In the course of the next verse Ruders' material gradually recedes into the background, and permits Bachs face to ernerge with increasing clarty in the foreground. Johannes Brahms's Alto Rhapsody is published here in a new Urtext edition, modernised for present-day performance practice. It is based on the 2nd impression of the first printed edition, as this is regarded as the authentic musical text following the last revisions made by the composer. The musical setting of Goethe's poem Harzreise im Winter opens with a somber beginning, then by turning to divine powers, it arrives at a hopeful new level. The work - which was composed in connection with the marriage of Julie, the daughter of Brahms's revered Clara Schumann, in 1869 - impresses above all with its personal touch as well as its pioneering progressive harmonies and enormous compositional power, which still entice listeners into the concert hall. Winternach was written in1976-78 and the title was taken from a poem by the Austrian poet Georg Trakl. The four movements, which are all very precise and dreamingly poetic, are almost classical in terms of clarity and discipline in orchestration and form: hence the dedication of the third movement to Igor Stravinsky. However, the music has a strong impressionistic quality as well: four introverted still lifes of the velvety, dark iceness of a silvery winter night (one can veritably sense the fairy-tale-like sleigh ride in the two outer movements). The second movement is dedicated to the eccentric lithographer M.C. Escher and the first and last movements are both dedicated to Georg Trakl. As in the well-known orchestral work, Stratifications, we can enjoy Amrahamsen's fiscination with having several events occur simultaneously: a thoughtful as well as playful multilayered quality mirrors the poetic and mysterious worlds of painting, literature, nature and most important of all: music.

The title is intended to suggest the nature of the relationship between the two instruments,which constantly shadow each other in the course of the piece, as well as the character of much of the musical material ('shadowy' and evanescent).
