Nordanvind is a tour de force symphonic rhapsody that is built on three Scandinavian folk songs. Composer Carl Strommen has composed these Viking-influenced melodies into a concert setting that brings out all of the history of the Scandinavian people. Augustana College was founded in 1860 by graduates of Swedish universities and is located on the Mississippi River in Rock Island, Illinois . Home of the “Vikings,” Augustana College is the oldest Swedish- American institution of higher learning in the United States . This powerful and lively piece takes inspiration from Swedish history and from Swedish folk songs and hymns .Havsdrake (Dragon of the Sea)The Nordanvind or “North Wind” blows a cold wind during a journey of a group of courageous Viking rowers . The “Dragon-ship” or long ships designed for raiding and war was a sophisticated, fast ship able to navigate in very shallow water . To musically portray these magnificent seafaring vessels, the director is encouraged to use an Ocean Drum (or a rain stick) during the introduction . Wind players may consider blowing air through their instruments to suggest the North wind . Adding men’s voices to accompany the haunting low brass and percussive “rower” sounds can be helpful in creating the dark and ominous portrayal of Viking adventurers .Slangpolska efter Byss - KalleIn Sweden, a “polska” is a partner dance where the dancers spin each other (släng in Swedish “to sling or toss”) . As a daughter of a Swedish Lutheran minister, she began writing poems as a teenager and is said to have written over 1,700 different texts . There are two different accounts as to the inspiration for this hymn . The first story is that Lina (as she was called) wrote the hymn to honor her father and to say thank you to him for raising her and protecting her . A second belief is of her witnessing the tragic death of her father . She and her father were on a boat, when a wave threw her father overboard . It was said that the profound effect of watching her father drown is what caused Lina to write the text to this hymn . I have been Principal Clarinetist with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, North Carolina, since 1975. My interest in klezmer music began in 1984 when I realized how unique the clarinet voice can be in the klezmer idiom - it is totally different from playing in a symphony orchestra, and I found that unique voice to be very appealing. I formed a quartet called Viva Klezmer!, and we have been concertizing and recording ever since.
I discovered Lev Kogan's Hassidic Tunes for Clarinet and Piano a number of years ago and was struck by the lovely melodies and harmonies that Mr. Kogan had composed. The tunes were always enjoyed by audiences whenever I performed them, and it occured to me that several of them could be orchestrated and grouped together to form a very attractive klezmer suite. I enlisted the aid of my talented colleague, Alan Kaufman, and the result is this publication. There is dearth of klezmer music featuring clarinet with orchestra or chamber ensemble, and this publication helps fill that void.
The suite can be performed with orchestra or, if percussion and tuba are unavailable, as chamber music with clarinet and strings. In the absence of tuba, the part may be played by another bass instrument.
Gene Kavadlo
Lev Kogan (1927-2007) was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, and immigrated to Israel in 1972. Kogan attended the Moscow State Conservatory from 1946-1952 where he studied piano and was a composition of Aram Khatchturian. He has devotred much time to the research, creation and performance of Jewish music. In Israel, he has composed many productions for the Yiddish theater and Chassidic, Yiddish songs and chamber music.
Originally from New York State, Alan Kaufman graduated from Potsdam State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and a Master's Degree in Music Performance in Percussion. Since then, he has been a performer, arranger, educator, producer and composer of commercial jingles, recordings and movie and television soundtracks. He has produced albums and/or has arranged for an array of groups from The Buddy Rich Band to performing with artists as diverse as Luciano Pavoratti and Bernadette Peters, to Dave Brubeck and Johnny Cash. Since 1978, Alan has resided in Charlotte, NC where he continues his musical journey.

Tuba-euphonium octet

A native of Kyoto Japan, Kazuhiro Nakamura started to play the tuba at the age of 12, when he was in junior high school and received his bachelor of music degree from Osaka College of Music. He completed his college studies with Shigeo Takesada, principal tubist of Kyoto Symphony Orchestra with additional studies with Gene Pokorny, Robert Tucci, Daniel Perantoni, David Fedderly, Roger Rocco, Markus Hotzel, Alessandro Fossi, Kyle Turner, Toby Hanks, and Alan Baer. He also studied with Roger Bobo upon his move to Japan.
In 2001, he won 1st prize in the brass division of the Great Wall International Music Competition held by the Chinese Music Association. He plays regularly with numerous organizations including Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, Kyoto International Music Festival Orchestra, Kyoto Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, Japan Century Symphony Orchestra, Izumi Sinfonietta, Osaka Municipal Symphonic Band, and others.
He was selected as tubist of Asian Youth Orchestra where he performed from 2004~2007. He has been a guest artist at ITECs in 2010, 2012 and 2014, and also performed at Tubamania 2013 (Bangkok) and NERTEC 2013 and 2015 (Ithaca College). In addition to his performance work, he conducts bands ranging from the elementary level to community groups.
He served as instructor of tuba and ensemble at Osaka College of Music, and now, he is freelance player, famous clinician, arranger for tuba ensemble and translator for brass musician who come to Japan.

Known throughout the world as a founding member, music programmer and arranger for the Boston Brass , JD Shaw has also performed in the Rochester Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Wichita Symphony Orchestra, Missouri Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic and the Boston Pops. He has also been a featured performer on NPR's Performance Today and the CBS Morning Show. Prof. Shaw received a Bachelor of Music from Wichita State University, where he studied with Dr. Nicholas E. Smith, and a Master of Music from the Eastman School of Music. where he was awarded the Performer's Certificate under the tutelage of horn pedagogue Verne Reynolds.As an active performer and prolific arranger, Shaw has recorded over fifteen albums encompassing diverse musical styles from the classical, jazz, and Latin genres. His record labels include Loft Recordings, Mark Records, and Summit Records. A notable recent project featured the Boston Brass recording the Stan Kenton Christmas Carols with many well-known brass players, such as Scott Hartman, Jens Lindemann, Scott Thornburg, Jeff Nelsen, and Sam Pilafian. Prof. Shaw has presented numerous clinics and workshops for music educators, as well as masterclasses for students of all ages and levels. In addition to his credentials as a horn performer and teacher, he is the Brass Program Director and Music Arranger for the Phantom Regiment, the reigning Drum Corps International World Champion.
