Cloud breathing is a technique in Chinese martial arts involving short, sharp inhaling breaths and a slow exhale to oxygenate the body in preparation for fighting, meditation and healing. In this work, the piano begins in the upper register with tones like wind chimes, with the oboe entering beneath. This meditative first section leads to sudden shifts in harmony under a quiet oboe melody. Activity increases, leading to an oboe cadenza and a fast section based on rapid repeated notes in the oboe with the piano accompanying with contrapuntal lines. A brief piano solo leads to fragments of melody from the slow opening, now transformed. After a fortissimo climax, the quiet wind chime opening suddenly returns. Par BARNES JAMES. Risoluto is a music term of Italian derivation, first appearing in the mid 1700s. A great many musical terms such as this are in Italian, because many of the important composers from the Renaissance to the Baroque were from the geographic area known today as Italy and spoke some form of Italian. Consequently, performance markings in their published music, widely disseminated through the rest of Europe, were in the language that they best understood. Music marked in this manner is to be played firmly and decisively with firm resolve and little variance from the marked tempo. It can be seen that while there are several stylistic changes in this piece, the tempo varies not a bit, holding firm at Allegro vivo, quarter note at 120, from first measure to last. / Date parution : 2022-09-20/ Répertoire / Concert Band

Hope Arises is one of two new works requested in 2021 of composer James Barnes by Colonel Donald Schofield, to be written for the United States Air Force Band. It is a short piece intended to be used as an opener for AFB's tour concerts. It opens with a dramatic brass fanfare, based on consecutive perfect fourths first introduced by horns and euphoniums, followed by a short oboe solo. An ascending line in mallets and woodwind provide a rather celestial transition, taking the listener to a lively, melodic allegro, which is based on the same opening fourths. This allegro theme is developed until a return to the opening fanfare is powerfully re-announced in brass. The work concludes quite dramatically, and includes a return of the ascending line in woodwinds, mallets, harp and piano. / Date parution : 2023-07-31/ Répertoire / Concert Band

Inspired by Boulez's multi-cello piece 'Messagesquisse? and John Scofield's inspired funk number 'Protocol?, 'Shift, Trip? is an unrelenting moto perpetuo for amplified cello and pre-recorded guitars, brass and percussion. Although choreographed early on the piece is designed to stand alone. It demands virtuosity and great stamina from the performer over a five and a half octave range and requires exact synchronisation with the recorded backing track whose shifting rhythmic patterns trip up in unpredictable ways, as the title implies. I'm indebted to Lester Barnes for guiding me through his vast guitar, brass and explosion effects sample library, mixing the results, and to percussionist Julian Warburton for hitting a lot of metal in interesting ways.
