My Concerto for Horn and String Orchestra (1993) was commissioned by the Bravo! Colorado Music Festival at Vail*Beaver Creek, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and French Hornist, David Jolley; made possible by a grant from the Meet The Composer/Reader’s Digest Commissioning Program, in partnership with the National endowment for the Arts and the Lila Wallace Reader’s Digest Fund. The work is approximately 14 minutes in duration. Its premiere took place in Vail at the Bravo! Colorado Music Festival with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra under Lawrence Leighton Smith conducting, and David Jolley, solo horn.The Concerto is in one movement with five section, including a solo cadenza. Although the work is concerto-like in the exploration of a wide range of technical and dramatic possibilities of the horn—culminating in a highly virtuosic cadenza—the piece can also be heard as a “tone poem” with the horn cast as the “hero.”Yet, while I think of the solo horn as an heroic figure, I have very much enjoyed the interplay and dialogue between horn and strings and I allowed the character and nature of the horn to influence the strings and vice-versa. For instance, in the cadenza the solo horn line sometimes breaks into two or three parts, projecting two or three voices (a type of solo writing usually associated with strings, not winds); and on several occasions I have used the violas, divided in three, together with the solo horn, to suggest the sound of a quartet of horns. For me, the combination of solo horn and string orchestra is rich and evocative, as is the unique nature of the horn; its warmth and color; its dramatic legato as well as its pungent staccato; the sheer breadth of its sound.The Concerto is dedicated to hornist David Jolley, for whom it was written.

The text of Bach's cantata Tue Rechnung! Donnerwort was published in 1715, that is during Bach's Weimar period, in the Evangelisches Andachts-Opffer by Salomon Frank. This concisely-written but powerful work was, however, only composed ten years later in Leipzig, and was heard for the first time on 29 July 1725, the 9th Sunday after Trinity. Its main dramatic-musical emphasis lies clearly in the first movement, a dark, almost operatic movement for baritone and string orchestra in B minor. By contrast, the ensuing aria for tenor with obbligato oboe accompaniment is distinctly more intimate, and the duet between soprano and alto - just accompanied by continuo - is more restrained in its musical language and expression than the first movement. In between there are two extended recitatives, the first of which leads into an arioso. The breadth of expression within the cantata is striking, its opening movement a masterpiece of Bach's dramatic writing. Score available separately - see item CA.3116800.

For the German Protestant Church Congress 2015, this ancient text was set in contemporary style by Tilman Jager under the title Missa Pacis. The hour-long composition is scored for 4-8 part chorus with optional soloists and accompanying band. The music of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is a gift. Nearly every piece that poured out of this man is as inspired and perfected as the next. His body of work has cut a deep incision in the recorded history of music and set a benchmark to which all the contrapuntal masters who followed have aspired to meet.The transcriptions found within this volume add to the thousands upon thousands of versions of his music already re-worked for different groups and media. The music here does not, however, embellish Bach’s own scores (save but for a couple of instances in which it was felt necessary to add an inner voice to serve the expansive range of the ten woodwinds). The selections are ordered (loosely) to assume a smooth, inclined trajectory of both difficulty and musical breadth. The first piece is a small and simpleminuet, the last is a long interior movement of one of the most beloved and advanced violin concertos in the whole repertoire.As a keyboard player I grew up learning and falling in love with much of Bach’s music at the piano. For this very reason, much of this volume consists of the composer’s keyboard works. One cannot, however, deny many of the most cherished works from Bach’s oeuvre when compiling a set of transcriptions, and many of those “hits” are included here as well.Departing from a traditional harmoniemusik ensemble, I have replaced the horns here with saxophones. There are two reasons: 1) the nature of much of this music requires instruments with an ease of agility not executable so readily on the horn; and 2) the opportunity for saxophone players to be included in such an ensemble was very attractive, pedagogically.I hope you enjoy these gems from such a great genius.
