Veteran composer Carl Strommen’s Jumpin’ Jack Jive opens in a bright, brisk four and soon switches to a trademark two feel, reminiscent of the great big bands of yesteryear. A medium tempo swing oriented piece with ensemble figures and harmonic sculpture out of the ``cool school’’ of jazz. Finesse is the key word, and a bit of underselling is needed to execute the chart properly.

This playful medium-tempo swinger features a smooth, self-assured melody that glides along a cool, slightly altered blues progression. Trumpet and alto sax carry the melody at first before passing it off to the brass section; saxophones cleverly punctuate the brass section with heavily accented chords. The saxophones take the melody the third time around, while the brass offers incisive interjections here and there. A solo section follows that features just the right amount of background writing that enhances the proceedings without ever getting in the way; the solo section may be repeated as desired to feature additional soloists. A swinging ensemble follows the solos, starting off at a simmer and gradually heating up to the exciting full-ensemble shout chorus. Don’t Let These Blues Fool You is sure to be a favorite for concert and contest!

With a catchy melody, jazzy call-and-response licks, and a fun Latin feel, Hop, Skip ‘Nda Jump really bounces off the page. It initially features the 1st trumpet, and alto then adds in the rest of the band to Hop, Skip 'nda Jump their way in to a great concert closer. The solo section is open with straight ahead changes and simple backgrounds then a bridge that gives each section a chance to leap up and take their turn. It ends with a big shout chorus and even with modest brass ranges it's scored so that it sounds full and exciting!

Prelude and Fugue in C BWV is taken from the Eight Short Preludes and Fugues, a collection of works for keyboard that were most likely used as teaching pieces for beginners. There has been back and forth about the attribution of these works, but most scholars agree that they are by Bach, just simplified for his students. Matthew McCrady has beautifully arranged this 4-5 minute work for Brass Quintet and included parts in C and B-flat for the Trumpets.
