Light Overture - A Symphonic Entertainment was composed by Poul Ruders in 2006. Commissioned by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Music Director and Principal Conductor Justin Brown for Alabama Power Company’s 100 Year Anniversary Concert. Light Overture subtitled A Symphonic Entertainment is a short piece for symphony orchestra lasting approximately eight minutes. Light Overture is focusing on two interpretations of the word light: ”light” as in the absence of darkness and “light” as in easily comprehensible; in other words a piece with few or no metaphysicalconnotations. It is just a piece setting a festive mood as is often the case with this sort of short “concert opener”. However the journey through Light Overture is not entirely happy-go-lucky. Once in a while slightly darker colours are introduced for the sake of variety and contrast. And formally the composition is quite strict: an outright Prelude and Fugue the former sliding seamlessly into the latter. Commissioned by the award-winning Kalamazoo (MI) Concert Band Alleluia is a convergence of hauntingly emotive themes that culminate in breath-taking builds. The Kalamazoo Gazette described it as the “pinnacle of theconcert” in which it was premiered adding that Hazo's master composition takes the listener from “...bells and chimes to full Hosannas. The result was transfiguring! It first fades like a sunset then explodes inwhite light bringing the audience to their feet.” Written for mature ensembles this work will have a powerful impact on the performers as well as all who hear it. Suite in Five Movements. Par HOYVIK DAHL HILDE. “At the Zoo” is a light and playful piece for the beginning musicians. Different animals and their characteristics are the theme of each movement, and the melody alternates between the different sections of the band to emphasize this. Commissioned by the McDaniel College Summer Music Camp in Westminster Maryland Kirkpatricks Muse celebrates 30 years of excellence and is dedicated to camp founder Dr. Linda Kirkpatrick. The piece opens with a plaintive Irish style flute solo then moves seamlessly to the fast-paced section loosely based around the Appalachian fiddle tune ?Glory in the Meeting House? introduced by the bodhran (Irish frame drum). Undercurrents provides an electrifying virtuosic showcase for the whole ensemble - featuring a series of solos duets and trios as well as highlighting the various chamber sections within the band. The music was inspired by watching schools of fish and flocks of birds perpetually moving with the ocean currents and air currents. Every once in a while a single solo shape will appear - or two or three - they dance apart for a moment and then are drawn back into the ensemble. Commissioned by the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy Victoria BC this is a powerful tour-de-force from beginning to end. Dur: c. 6:30.
