In order to be able to express yourself freely with the instrument a good technique is essential. But this technique should be discreet and become both natural and instinctive so that it can serve the music. Here, the band will be able to work with latin rhythms, syncopation (which doesn't rush) and with possible solo elements on the melody. Use your imagination and feel free to re-arrange to let your musicians shine. (Example: bar 27 and onwards can be performed as a duet) All three songs can be played separately. They have different degrees of difficulty and if the band lack the ability to perform the last melody, you can easily stop before that. 1. 'We don't talk about Bruno' (1-55) benefits greatly from having a Guiro saying 'go-ap tsh tsh'. This piece can be stopped by playing to the end of bar 54. If you want to play this piece only, you can easily extend it, by repeating from 27, perhaps with other soloists? 2. 'Surface Pressure' (55-116) If the cowbell-part is not played, percussionists have to play these two weak beats in 56. The groove for drum set is also very important from 68. Also, that you get a proper swing feeling on 84- 98 and that the drummer in 99 really goes back to even eighths. If you want to extend this piece, you may repeat from 84. If you want to end after this song, you can insert a ritardando 2 bars before 116 and preferably add a quarter note high G, then a quarter rest, and then a darker G. Another possibility is to repeat from 84 and then stop at the first note in 100. 3. 'The Family Madrigal' can of course also be played alone. This is truly a song that gets people clapping! I have chosen to make the opening rhythm a little easier by adding an eighth note to the one (120) If the ensemble has a very good understanding of rhythm, it can be skipped, but then the only tone in the phrase that is on the pulse beats will be the quarter note in the second measure. You can start the piece straight on bar 120 without the drum intro. If you want to extend this piece, you can repeat 152 – 199. (Or you can go all the way back to 136) If you do so, you can perhaps skip the first house at the end, if the audience is not standing on the chairs dancing Have fun performing this arrangement! Invocation was written for the Choir of The Queen’s College Oxford and represents the culmination of the composer’s time as a research fellow at the college when he worked closely with the choir. Phillip had long been a devotee of Edward Thomas’s evocative poem Adlestrop with its dreamy pastoral feel invoking the very essence of a sultry English country afternoon. It seemed a natural choice to set not least because it mentions the two counties in which he has spent the last seven years Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire. Phillip wanted the workfurther to emphasise the link with everything we might class as a stereotypical English countryafternoon cricket on the green church bells birdsong and warm beer the mythical ‘middle-England’. His work in no way tries to depict this rather to distil the feeling it is a rhapsody on a theme of English country life that men went to war to preserve something very different from the more rugged landscape he grew up with in the Lake District. The work is called Invocation because it is precisely that a spell or charm something that bewitches the listener and that the composer hopes stays long in the mind rather like Adlestrop or indeed Adlestrop itself.The Novello New Choral Series is an inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers offering pieces for all types of choirs including sacred and secular works from simple four-part settings to more expansive yet accessible repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. The city of St. Louis played host in the 1920s and 1930s to one of the most distinctive and vital blues scenes ever documented on record. Like Memphis and Atlanta St. Louis served as a sort of magnet attracting musicians from the surrounding hinterlands and providing performance opportunities that were not available out in the country. Many of the St. Louis musicians were transplanted Mississippians like Charley Jordan while others like Clifford Gibson and Teddy Darby originally hailed from Kentucky. The various early influences that the music of these players displayed ended up coalescing into something that might be called the 'St. Louis sound'.Included on thisDVD are transcriptions and teaching of the songs of Teddy Darby where the guitar and voice track each other closely Clifford Gibson with his distinctive approach to playing in Spanish tuning and the mysterious low cross-note sound Charley Jordan with his acrobatic thumbwork and occasionally raggy sound and the enigmatic Lane Hardin who only recorded two titles under his own name. In February 1909 Debussy was elected a member of the Conseil Superieur of the Paris Conservatoire and in this capacity was called on to serve on the jury at internal competitions. He wasinvited to write two test pieces for the 1910 clarinet contest; one for the interpretation class the other for the sight reading test. The Premiere Rhapsodie was composed during December 1909 and January 1910 concurrentlywith work on the first book of Preludes for piano.

The Battle on the Heath On 24 January 1597, the ?Tielenheide? - a stretch of moorland near the Belgian village of Tielen, south of Turnhout-was the scene of a great battle. Prince Maurice of Nassau, commander of the Dutch army, crushingly defeated Count Varax, a Burgundian general of the Spanish army. In military circles, the Battle of Turnhout caused quite a stir: a Spanish army of five thousand men was initially held up for hours through daring short moves by fifteen cavalrymen and a few hundred foot-soldiers -and subsequently, this Spanish army was overpowered by barely a thousand cavalrymen, without the help of the infantrymen. New weaponry proved its value that day. The Dutch cavalrymen were not armed with spears, as previously, but with long, carbine-like pistols . Before the pikemen of the Spanish army could stick their fearsome, six-metre-long spears into the ground to protect themselves against the onrushing horses, they were shot to pieces or knocked down. During the battle, the state troops seized a number of flags, which would embellish the Ridderzaal (Knights? Hall) in The Hague for years.In a contemporary Dutch military magazine, the victory at the ?Tielenheide? has been described as ? the heaviest blow ever delivered by the Dutch cavalry?. The location where the battle took place is no langer moorland: it is now a pine forest planted more than a century age, to meet the demand for wood in the old coalmines of Limburg . Part of the forest is now the military territory of the Third Paratroop Batallion, and part is now the De Waal nature reserve: it is not accessible to the public. In Tielen there is still a street called the Tielenheide, near the former moorland.

At First Light was commissioned by Eric Bruskin a resident of Philadelphia USA in memory of his mother. Eric had a longstanding enthusiasm for my work and I was touched to be the person he approached for a task which is both a privilege and a daunting responsibility. In a sense no music can ever measure up to the weight of love or the hope of consolation vested in it under such circumstances – but in memory I carry the deaths of both my own parents and I was able to draw upon that. Eric’s fondness for my Cello Sonata (itself written in memoriam) led him to ask that I include a solo ‘cello part in the new work – but his attachment also to my polyphonic sacred choral writing meant that he wanted a centrepiece which would be both a showcase of that approach and the celebration of a life well lived. Therefore the seven movements of At First Light arrange themselves as a series of slow meditations surrounding an exuberant 9-minute motet in which the lamenting cello falls temporarily silent. Eric’s Jewish faith meant that approaching an agnostic humanist brought up within the Anglican tradition was hardly free of problems! Gradually though I was able to win his approval for a collated mosaic of texts. This embraces some liturgical Latin (necessary for the motet) as the shared preserve of broad western culture in general but balances it with a secular approach to loss celebration remembrance and the many shades of our mourning those whom we see no longer. Eric was adamant that he did not want the title Requiem; but what has emerged is still a form of semi-secular Requiem in all but name taking its title instead from a phrase in the poem by Thomas Blackburn set as the third movement. This seemed to suggest succinctly how the loss of one very close to us is an awakening into an unfamiliar world where everything is changed. Following the exuberant central movement the texts by the Lebanese-born Kahlil Gibran and the US Kentuckian poet Wendell Berry first address the departed loved one directly then place us within an imaginary funeral cortège where the perennial and universal in human experience become personal without subscribing explicitly to any particular faith (or lack of it). The final text of all is a translation of a Hebraic prayer requested and provided by Eric Bruskin which serves to mirror its Latin counterpart heard at the outset. Throughout the lamenting cello represents a commentary on the experience articulated in the text. It evokes and in a sense tries to embrace and sanctify the individual existential journeys of the bereft as they in turn seek to make their own sense of what the short-lived Second World War poet Alun Lewis called ‘the unbearable beauty of the dead’ (movement 5). In a modern world hostage to ever greater menace displacement bloodshed and anguish I hope fervently that this music not only brings a measure of solace to the person who commissioned it but also makes its own small contribu

Symphony No. 3 (1972-1975) by Per Nørgård. Per Nørgård's third symphony commissioned by The Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra (conductor Herbert Blomstedt) was premiered in Copenhagen in 1976 and received wide attention. The work gives comprehensive expression to a new realm of musical experience which the composer began to explore toward the end of the 1960s. While the first period in Nørgårds production in the 1050s represents his personal interpretation of the Nordic music tradition – evidenced for example in his “Piano Sonata No. 2” (1957) and“Constellations” for chamber orchestra (1958) – and the second period in the 1960s saw him working with serial techniques musical collage and a new sound-palette - especially in the orchestral works “Iris” (196-67) and “Luna” (1967) – with “Voyage into the Golden Screen” (1968) Nørgård arrived at a new compositional technique based on the use of a special form of a so-called “infinity series” a principle of musical motion to be applied to all kinds of scales (chromatic diatonic et cetera). It is characteristic that that Nørgård in the 1970s chose to cultivate diatonic infinity series already evident in the mythological opera “Gilgamesh” (1971-72). Thus the Symphony No. 3 begun directly after the opera combines the infinity series major and minor scales the partial series of natural harmonics and “sub-harmonics” (Nørgårds terminology) with rhythmic patterns based on the Golden Section (the Golden Mean) in a nexus of synchronous yet disparate elements which serve the composers vision of musical coherence..
