The latest volume of Chamber Music for Violoncellos contains four sacral works, two of which were arranged for cello quartet by the editor of the series, Árpád Pejtsik. Both Angelus!, Liszt's piano piece of ethereal beauty, and the Kyrie of Mozart's Requiem, an irresistibly surging four-part fugue, are magnificent when played with the immensely rich sound of the four cellos. The second part of the volume contains a pair of inspired works by two prominent cellists and composers of the 19th century: Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Fitzenhagen's Consecration Hymn and Friedrich Grützmacher's Ave Maria. While an instrumental skill of at least intermediate level is required for playing the upper parts due to the use of higher positions, the lower parts can be performed by beginner cellists. Par VIVALDI ANTONIO. Throughout his life, Antonio Vivaldi wrote almost thirty instrumental works that use the cello as a solo instrument. Vivaldi knew how to tailor his music to the cello and in doing so, helped to establish this still young instrument in the music of that time. The Concerto RV 531 is the only double concerto in Vivaldi's 'uvre for two solo violoncellos. The two solo parts take centre stage with virtuosic passages but lie on the instrument so well that they can be comfortably mastered by advanced students. The edition is based on the careful evaluation of Vivaldi's autograph score which is the main source and several inconsistencies found in previous editions have been clarified. At the same time the edition allows for a flexible realisation of this concerto: it can be performed by a full tutti orchestra or by one performer per part. 'The idea of writing a 'Jazz Suite for cello solo' came out when I tried to imagine how it would have sounded like if one of the baroque masters (Gabrielli, Buxtehude, Bach) had lived in our time and wanted to write a suite of dances. I thought it would probably still keep some of the conventions of the traditional form, like maybe the use of a Prelude to establish the key and the alternation of slow with fast movements. But some things would have definitely been different: the harmonies, for example would probably have been more complex and not always tonal. Also the popular dances used as a workbench for the suite would have been not gigues or Bourees but perhaps latin american or Jazz standards. Well, since the great masters are unfortunately not able at the moment to accept my challenge, I had to write it myself. I hope you will enjoy it.
