A lot is known
about the American
composer Leroy Anderson.
This son of Swedish
immigrants played the
piano, organ, accordion,
trombone, tuba and double
bass. He spoke several
languages fluently and
graduated from Harvard
with first-class
honours.While on military
service, the army also
commissioned him to write
a manual on Icelandic
grammar.He already
started writing musical
arrangements as a
student, and from his
30th year arranged and
composed for the Boston
Pops Orchestra. Such
melodiesas Serenata, The

Solemnity was
composed when the
composer came back from
his first Midwest Clinic
in Chicago. Inspired by
all the concert bands
performing there, and all
the fellow composers met
at this occasion, he
decided to write a kind
of fanfare work, leading
to a fast theme on a
driving rhythm.The piece
begins like a fanfare
with a solemn character
which gives the title of
the work, the brass here
have a nice part to play.
Then, a new theme full of
energy, using the same
rhythmic motive as the
fanfare theme, is exposed
by the high woodwinds and
finally by more
instruments. The central
part is a slow one, where
a melancolic theme is
exposed by the oboe, and
finally the rest of the
band. After a fugato
section, the energic
theme is back to lead to
a brilliant
coda.

is the Principal
Piccoloist of the
SeattleSymphony and is
regularly featured as
both a soloist and
clinician in Seattle and
across the world. Her
performances consistently
receive highest praise
from both critics and
audiences. A native of
New Orleans, she received
B.A. and M.M. degrees
from Louisiana State
University. After a year
of study with Albert
Tipton she attended
Northwestern University
earning a Doctor of Music
degree under the tutelage
of Walfrid Kujala. She
has been a member of the
New Orleans Pops, Baton
Rouge Symphony, Colorado
Philharmonic, and the
Civic Orchestra of
Chicago. She has
performed with the
Chicago Symphony and
served on the faculties
of the University of
Washington and Pacific
Lutheran University. She
was the founding editor
of Flute Talk and ison
the Editorial Board for
The Flutist Quarterly.
Zart is the immediate
past president of the
National Flute
Association, and been a
featured soloist and
presenter at numerous NFA
conventions. Zart has
commissioned numerous
works, including two for
piccolo and piano by
Martin Amlin, sonatas by
Gary Schocker and Levente
Gyongyosi, and a chamber
work by Ken Benshoof. She
can be heard in over 100
recordings by the Seattle
Symphony, and her solo

SHIELDS received her B.M.
summa cum laude in organ
and violin from St. Olaf

her M.M. from
Northwestern University,

the art of improvisation.
She served as Director of
Music at St.
Luke’s Lutheran
Church in Park Ridge,
Illinois, where she
developed a music program
involving over 150
participants in choirs
and chamber music
groups.Upon her return to
Seattle, she served for
12 years as director of
adivision of the
Northwest Girlchoir. She
became organist and
developed a vibrant Youth
Choir at Phinney Ridge
Lutheran Church, where
she served for over 30
years, as well as
enjoying a 20-year tenure
as Music Director and
Composer-in-Residence of
Temple De Hirsch Sinai.
Valerie’s work
with children’s
choirs,churches, and
synagogues has inspired
over 100 published
compositions. When I
was invited to perform a
Vivaldi piccolo concerto
in Italy a few years ago,
my host, Luisa Sello,
wrote that Carol Wincenc
was going to be on the
same concert, and was
there any piece that we
could play together? I
looked and asked around,
and my colleague Joanna
Bassett recommended the
Telemann Concerto in E
Minor for Traverso and
Recorder. I didn’t
know the piece, but as I
listened to a recording
of it, I immediately
loved it and could easily
envision how beautifully
it could work, with a few
“adjustments,â€
for flute and piccolo.
I got to work, and the
current publication is
the result. I have
performed it many times,
and enjoy it even more
every time. It fits a
unique place in our
repertoire, and works
equally well with piano
as with the string
orchestra
setting.According to
Steven D. Zohn,
pre-eminent Telemann
scholar, and author of
Music for a Mixed Taste:
Style, Genre, and Meaning
in Telemann’s
Instrumental Works, much
is unknown about the
concerto itself; it
likely dates from the
1720s, soon after
Telemann moved to
Hamburg. Only an
eighteenth-century
copyist’s set of
parts is extant, that of
Johann Samuel Endler, who
was engaged at the
Darmstadt court as a
singer and violinist,
later becoming
Vice-Kapellmeister and
Kapellmeister, and who
had a large collection of
Telemann’s
works.As in my Vivaldi
concertos edition
(Presser 414-41190), I
have added virtually all
of the articulations and
dynamics that appear
here, and have inserted
quite a bit of
ornamentation. Unlike the
Vivaldi edition, I have
not included any
indication of the
original Telemann in
those passages, nor have
I included any
pedagogical markings,
such as

The missing string parts,
the addition of the
saxophone section and
other band instruments,
editing of the
superimposed triplets
against
sixteenth notes, to
one or the other, and
articulations suitable
for the band, were major
challenges. The style of
early twentieth-century
American music is
captured here. This
arrangement will give
band musicians access to
a fine piece of music
that could only be
appreciated by orchestra
musicians up to now.

This
composition grew out of a
musical concert in
Chicago sometime in 1981.
The concert was an
outgrowth of public
opinion about the
superiority of various
ensembles in three of the
top five US Symphony
Orchestras of that
period. The Philadelphia
Orchestra under Eugene
Ormandy had the
reputation of having the
most luxurious string
section of any orchestra
in the world. Ormandy was
a superior violinist
himself, and worked his
strings into providing a
similar luxurious string
sound of which he himself
was master. It was agreed
that the Boston Symphony
had the top woodwind
choir, and the Chicago
Symphony the best brass
choir. An outgrowth of
these widely held
opinions occurred in
Chicago in 1981 when the
Chicago Symphony Brass
section announced a
performance in Symphony
Hall. The event attracted
a sell out crowd and
standing room overflow.
Public interest was keen
and intense. The detail
of the concert included
brass solos, duets and
trios of a wide variety
and concluded with a
large brass choir work by
a local composer, which
had been commissioned to
premiere in this concert.
The musical evening was
marvelous, a brilliant
triumph for superlative
brass players of
world-class quality.
Afterwards the players
remained on the stage and
were beset by hundreds of
congratulating fans. The
principal horn, Dale
Clevenger, was a friend
of mine who was present
at the International Horn
Conference in 1974, when
Barry Tuckwell of the
London Symphony premiered
my Sonata for Horn and
Piano. I congratulated
Dale on the brass wonders
that we had all just
witnessed, and commented
that the final brass work
was somewhat
disappointing. Dale said
that he and the other
players felt the same. At
that point, Dale said Why
don't you write a work
for the Chicago Brass for
our next offering? How
could I not be
complimented by such an
invitation? I immediately
started to write
Stonehenge, having just
visited Stonehenge in
Britain a month or two
earlier. But the Chicago
Brass did not have a
follow up to their first
presentation, so there
was no opportunity for my
new work to be performed
by them. Later there was
a premiere in Madison,
Wisconsin, by three
professional brass
quintets who were
together hosted by the
School of Music of the
University of Wisconsin.
They were joined by four
superb percussionists
from the Madison
Symphony. Stonehenge
received a wonderful
ovation from an
enthusiastic full house
audience, and that led to
wide use in the Midwest
by other brass groups,
including a professional
brass choir in Minnesota,
which recorded the work
superbly, and two
different tours of the
work by a brass choir
from the Indiana
University School of
Music. The wonderful
response to this work's
recording and its many
performances have been a
delight to the

on 20th December 2017
where this fanfare was
the opening piece of the
entire event. This piece
is designed to be played
with the cornets split
into two teams either
side of the band. It
opens with the two groups
answering each other
antiphonally over a
repeated figure in the
lower band. A calmer
central section
introduces a euphonium
solo which is then taken
up by the whole ensemble.
This leads back to a
repeat of the opening
fanfares over a rhythmic
accompaniment and a short
coda which brings the
work to a
close.
