major: A work that time
and again occupied the
composer anew, with which
he, in his words, strived
towards the highest in

wished to receive a court
appointment in Vienna.
His efforts to present a

of pathos in favor of an

Missa pastoralis bohemica
(Bohemian Shepherds'
Mass), composed in 1796
by Mozart's contemporary
Jakub Jan Ryba, is the
most significant of the
so-called Czech Christmas
Masses. These are masses
in a folkloristic style,
in which the individual
movements consist of a
series of
vocal-instrumental scenes
in the Czech language;
their topic is the birth
of Christ and they are
performed during the
Christmas service. The
story is about four Czech
shepherds to whom the
birth of Christ is
announced, whereupon they
visit the child in the
manger. Ryba's mass
became so famous that it
is regarded - even today
- as a symbol of Czech
Christmas. The present

h's cantata BWV 132 was
written for the 4th
Sunday in Advent, and the
autograph score is dated
1715. It was composed
while Bach was at Weimar,

Weimar Court Preacher
Salomon Franck. Its

testimony of John the
Baptist addressed to the
Christian community and
to individual believers.
Since the original
concluding chorale, the
fifth verse of the hymn

h's cantata BWV 13 (from
the third cycle of
Leipzig cantatas) was
first performed on the
2nd Sunday after Epiphany
in 1726. This work is
marked especially by its
scoring, unusual in
Bach's church music, in
which the strings are
joined by two recorders
and an oboe da caccia:
these wind instruments
are used to convey the
dominant affections of
sighing and pain in the
individual arias. In
accordance with the
intimate character of
this cantata the
four-part vocal ensemble
is used only in the
chorale at the end of the
work. Score and parts

Schubert's Mass in A-flat
major: A work that time
and again occupied the
composer anew, with which
he, in his words, strived
towards the highest in
art - and perhaps only
wished to receive a court
appointment in Vienna.
His efforts to present a
new, individual mass led,
at any rate, to
unconventional solutions
(and an unusual key), a
renunciation of plain
acclamation, a reduction
of pathos in favor of an
exceptionally elaborate
composition, particularly
the first part - a
brilliant missa solemnis
for the ceremonious
organization of the court
church service and, at
the same time, the public
presentation of an
ambitious composer's
artistic competence.

Latin. Here, as
also in his earlier Litte
Credo Mass KV 192, Mozart
made use of a church
music device which can be
traced back in
south-German and Austrian
church music to the
beginning of the 18th
century: frequent
repetition of the opening
words of the Credo. This
presupposes that the
setting of the words of
the intonation Credo in
unum Deum as part of an
ensemble composition,
which for centuries had
been intoned in plainsong
by the priest, had become
liturgically acceptable.
It was only a small and
syntactically logical
step for the word Credo
to be repeated before the
individual articles of
belief, thus
strengthening the
declaration of faith.

commissioned by Sergei
Diaghilev and premiered
with the Ballets Russes

ballet is now rarely
performed, but its
Suite No. 2
remains popular. It
consists of three

interruption. Tohru

compromises in his
transcription, which
calls for at least 60

De

La

au troisième tableau du
