3 Songs For Mixed Choir-Choristers of Flight for mixed choir comprises three colourful settings of nineteenth-century poetry focussing on different aspects of bird-song and flight. Evocation to a Friend was commissioned for the Choristers of Canterbury Cathedral on behalf of Befrienders International (now Befrienders Worldwide). The text is by David Race and explores themes of friendship and hope. The music grows in intensity over a cyclic harmonic pattern with repeating melodic fragments arranged across the four voices creating a hypnotic effect. (Novello New Choral Series)-There is no rose of such virtue is an anonymous mediaeval text already well known through beautiful settings by Britten (in his Ceremony of Carols) John Joubert and others. The poem is ‘macaronic’ (it presents a verse in English followed by a varying Latin refrain). This new version follows the illustrious examples above by remaining strophic and presenting broadly the same music in a succession of slightly different guises. The first verse is a straightforward four-part setting the second gives the melody to the tenors and surrounds them with hushed wordless writing for the other parts and the third explores a freely canonic relationshipbetween the tenor and soprano lines before carrying the previous verse-endings to a higher more exalted pitch and mood. The fourth verse then expands its texture in a free climactic passage evoking the songs of praise sung by the angels. This subsides towards the final verse where the texture of the music attenuates again to four parts and canonic writing (based on the first four notes of the original melody) permeates all of them. This slightly extended statement leads to a hushed final cadence.Francis Pott (b. 1957) began musical life as a chorister at New College Oxford. He held open music scholarships at Winchester College and at Magdalene College Cambridge where he studied composition with Robin Holloway and Hugh Wood while pursuing piano studies privately in London with the distinguished British artist Hamish Milne. Throughout the 1990s Francis was John Bennett Lecturer in Music at St Hilda’s College Oxford and a lay clerk in the Choir of Winchester Cathedral. In 2001 he became Head of London College of Music University of West London later leading research across the University’s Faculty of Arts and acceding in 2007 to its first Chair in Composition. This three-movement work for Organ Air Berceuse and Procession written in 1949 is a very appealing piece that speaks in Sumsion’s fresh melodic Voice. His style is diatonic modern and individual and has not been aged by the orthodoxies of its time.Twentieth century composer and Organist Harold Sumsion spent most of his life in Gloucester where he was a chorister at the cathedral then an articled pupil to the Organist and later assistant Organist and eventually a leader of the Three Choirs Festival. There were short periods studying and teaching in at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. He enjoyed a long and productive tenure atGloucester Cathedral where through is leadership of the Three Choirs Festiva l he came to know some of the most important British composers in particular Edward Elgar.

The words of the Wedding Hymn O Perfect Love were written by the English poet Dorothy Frances Gurney (née Blomfield) (1858-1932) to be used with an earlier melody. Sir Joseph Barnby then wrote a tune specifically for the words in 1890. This was popularised when it was used in 1893 at the wedding of the Duke of York and Princess Mary of Tek who would later become King George V and Queen Mary. Sir Joseph Barnby (1838-1896) was an English composer and conductor. He was a chorister at York Minster before studying at the RAM. He later became director of Music at Eton and Principal of the Guildhall School of Music.

Composed for the Eucharist of Christmas Night 2004 at the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary Rochester in the year of the 1400th anniversary of the cathedral's foundation.Missa Carolae wascommissioned for Rochester Cathedral and first performed there on 24 December 2004 by the Rochester Cathedral Choirs directed by Roger Sayer.Missa Carolæ was written for the 1400th anniversary of Rochester Cathedral thesecond oldest cathedral in England. Performances there begin with a ceremonial procession that follows the movement of a boy chorister accompanied by pipe and drum from the High Altar to a large crib placed in the Nave gathering the choirs (singing from different parts of the cathedral) and principal clergy in the course of the procession. The work though not literally for dancing is intended to invoke a dance-like spirit which is true to theorigin of the carol as a simple dance form. The choir parts should be very well known so that the singers can sing with the whole of their bodies and not just their voices. It is suitable for liturgical or concert use.

Christopher Brown (b.1943) is a British composer who grew up in the Anglican choral tradition first as a chorister at Westminster Abbey and then as a Choral Scholar at King’s College Cambridge before studying at theRoyal Academy of Music with Lennox Berkeley. He is often described as one of the leading British composers of the post-war generation. Toccata (Op. 56) is his only work for solo Organ. It was composed in1982 for the wedding of two friends and also dedicated to them.
