Die Gattung Sinfonie, wie sie am landgraflichen Hofe zu Darmstadt bis etwa 1760 gepflegt wurde, ist ein bisher weitgehend vernachlassigtes Forschungsgebiet. Diese Tatsache muss um so mehr verwundern, da Darmstadt in dieser Zeit eines der wichtigsten hofischen Musikzentren im deutschsprachigen Raum war. Nach den Untersuchungen zur Instrumentalmusik Christoph Graupners (Beitrage zur mittelrheinischen Musikgeschichte, Band 32) wird nun ein Band uber den zweiten Kapellmeister Johann Samuel Endler vorgelegt, dessen Sinfonien auf besonders pragnante Weise Einblick in den reifen Darmstadter Instrumentalstil um die Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts gewahren. Die Arbeit enthalt neben einem biographischen Teil und der Beschreibung der Quellen ausgewahlte Analysen und ein thematisches Verzeichnis der Sinfonien.
