Ordi nary violin sonatas formed the backbone of the series of ten collections that the Italian violinist Michel Mascitti (1663/4–1760), born in southern Italy but permanently resident in Paris from 1703, committed to print between 1704 and 1738. His Op. 7 (1727) opens with eight such sonatas but ends with four concertos for strings in six parts that, alongside a collection of concertos for five flutes (!) by J.B. de Boismortier published in the same year, inaugurate the proud tradition of concertos created on French soil. Amazingly, Mascitti’s concertos have been neglected not merely by publishers and performers but also by commentators. In particular, the first two concertos display great musical merit in an original idiom that combines Italian and French influences in a very personal way. Further, their Italianate elements juxtapose features familiar from the concertos of Corelli, Mascitti’s reputed teacher, with ones more usually associated with Vivaldi. Both concertos are laden with emotion, albeit never at the expense of the polish and attention to detail that are the hallmark of Mascitti’s craft.

Mozart composed all of his horn concertos for Joseph Leutgeb, a long-standing friend of his family. In Salzburg Leutgeb was in the service of the court ensemble as horn player and violinist before departing for Vienna, where he became known as a performer of Mozart's horn concertos.

This anthology presents organ, harpsichord and piano concertos - the majority not hitherto published in modern editions - by Handel's contemporaries and successors, including works by Felton, Cooke, William Hayes, Arne, Chilcot, Philip Hayes, Hook, Rush, Stanley, Charles Wesley, Crotch, Samuel Wesley and Russell, from among the 200 examples surviving from the period c.1740-c.1815. In spite of their drastically reduced instrumental resources, these works are indeed ‘Italian’ concertos, and feature distinguishable solo episodes and ritornellos. Relatively difficult, it features the score and the Violin part. Really melodious, it includes numerous trills, harmonies, accidentals, acciaturas and some indications of the positions and techniques to use. The breathings are also indicated. It is a really nice work to play in recitals and can also be used for contests. Pierre Rode (1774-1830) was a French violinist and musician who composed numerous romantic concertos for Violin and Piano. He was the violin soloist to Napoleon and was dedicated a violin sonata (Op.96) by Beethoven.
