Par TCHAIKOVSKI PIOTR ILITCH. The Nutcracker Suite is a piano arrangement of the concert version of the ballet of that name. Tchaikovsky used only part of the music for the ballet in the suite. The Overture, and the March which is the most important of the characteristic dances in the Suite, come from the first act of the ballet. The remaining dances originate from the second act. They are: The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, in which the leading part is, in the original composition, played typically by the celeste almost all the way through; the fiery Russian 'Trepak' which reminds us of Tchaikovsky's national origins; the Arab Dance tinged with a gentle melancholy; the Chinese Dance with its tripping ostinato rhythm; the graceful Dance of the Reed Flutes; and finally the longest piece in the Suite: the Waltz of the Flowers in which Tchaikovsky, writing in the penultimate year of his life, showed his musical affinity with Johann Strauss. The name is derived from the french word courir to run. Typically in triple time, it features a short up beat. Staccato in nature and lively in performance. 4. Sarabande (Grave patetico) A slow courtly dance in triple time oftenfollowed by a Gigue. 5. Gigue (Vivace Leggiero) A lively baroque dance originating from the Irish jig and imported into France in the mid 17th century. En 1888, Grieg organisé quatre pièces de sa musique de scène pour le drame verset Peer Gynt d'Ibsen pour former une suite d'orchestre (op. 46). Elle a été suivie en 1891 par une deuxième suite pour orchestre (op. 55) comprenant encore 4 pièces. Les deux suites sont rapidement devenus établis dans le répertoire de concert et ont largement contribué à la renommée internationale de Grieg. Il a fait des arrangements pour piano des deux suites et publié simultanément avec les suites pour orchestre en 1888 et 1893. Grieg ensuite fait d'autresajustements dans les pièces pour piano: raccourcir certains, par exemple 'Morning', et l'expansion d'autres comme 'La mort de l'ASE'.
