Mauro Giuliani is considered today to have been the most important guitarist-composer of the early nineteenth century. Not only was Giuliani the foremost player of his day: his fame reached far beyond the realm of guitar enthusiasts, earning him a place among the musical élite as a complete, versatile musician. Even so, by the end of the nineteenth century he was largely forgotten and his music managed to retain little more than a marginal presence in the repertory of the great guitarists of the early twentieth century. The current revitalization of his work owes its origins to the monumental research begun by Thomas Heck in 1971 and continued by Ruggero Chiesa, Mario Torta, Marco Riboni, and Gerhard Pen. Thanks to the dedication of these scholars, Giuliani's music has progressively returned to its erstwhile prominence in the performing repertory. Giuliani wrote some 230 works, of which 150 carry opus numbers. They consist above all of pieces for solo guitar and a considerable quantity of chamber music for guitar and violin, flute, piano, or voice, as well as three guitar concertos. Par PART ARVO. 'Pari intervallo' was composed in 1976 on the occasion of the death of a friend and is dedicated to his memory. The basic musical material consists of two parts which move exactly parallel to each other, so that the interval between them is always the same- hence the title. Serie Ii. Par BARTOK BELA. What distinguishes Béla Bartók from most of his European contemporaries is his lifelong dedication to folk music. He began to look into Hungarian peasant music out of musical interest only, but gradually extended his research to the neighbouring countries' folk music to study relatedness and differences, origins and influences. Bartók started to collect Romanian folk tunes in 1908, in 1915 he adapted them to be played on the piano – his 'Romanian Christmas Carols' (UE 5890). This edition of sheet music provides the rewarding opportunity to plan a concert quite different to every other Christmas concert. This arrangement of Bartók's varied composition makes full use of a saxophone quartet's abundant acoustic possibilities. The colourful pieces will enhance the saxophone quartet repertoire. Song Cycle. Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. 1840 was Schumann ’s famous “year of song” that brought forth over 100 lieder. They included Myrthen op. 25, which he dedicated “to his dear bride”, Clara Wieck-Schumann. Besides famous songs such as “Widmung”, “Lotosblume” and “Nussbaum” to texts by German poets, the collection also saw Schumann venture further afield, whether to the Scottish Highlands with settings of Robert Burns or to Italy for the “Venetian Songs” of Thomas Moore. Schumann specialist Kazuko Ozawa has examined the first edition of 1840 and all the manuscript sources. Among the dedicatory autograph copies she has also discovered interestingearly versions of individual songs that are here published in an appendix. Cesar Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck's correspondence proves that he was directly involved in the printing of the sonata. Consequently, our new scholarly performing edition draws mainly on the first edition of the separate violin part. For the piano part, the first edition of the version for violoncello and piano, which appeared during Franck's lifetime, was an important source as many engraver's errors found in the first printing of the violin version had been corrected in this violoncello version. Initially written for Trumpet and Piano, this arrangement for Cornet and Piano is very melodic and quite challenging for the Cornet part. Quite fast, this very enjoyable work lasts 7 minutes and needs some advanced skills. The piece, starting by the Piano, shows a continuous exchange between the Cornet and the Piano. J. G. Pennequin (1864-1914) was a very famous Violin teacher in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. He was also the first Violin of the Opera-Comique and an accompanist of the Salle Pleyel. Winning First Prize of the Paris Conservatory, he wrote a complete method for Violin as well as an elementary method. Par TOMASI HENRI. Published in 1953, the Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra was composed by the French composer, conductor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971). This concerto was dedicated to Ulysse Delécluse (1907-1995), a French Clarinettist known for his transcription of 'Quinze études' by J. S. Bach for the clarinet. Each of its three movements were chosen to be the examination pieces at the Paris Conservatoire, the first movement for the Examination Solo in 1953 and the second and third for the Contest Solo in 1966. This concerto begins with an unconventional start, the clarinet playing on its own and being joined later by the orchestra. It also containssome unusual material such as polychords and dissonances through the piece.
