Concert Duets
is a collection of 14
arrangements of works by
prominent 18th-century
composers, mostly taken
from Trio Sonatas. Duet
11 is a Jim Self original
work in the Rococo style;
and Duets 12, 13 and 14
are arrangements of the
three-movements of the
Bach Concerto for Two
Violins. Included with
this edition are
play-along recorded
tracks by tubist Zach
Collins, who also served
as editor of the current
edition.
I created
these duets as Christmas
gifts for my tuba playing
friends, with the first
duet being arranged in
1976. All 14 of the duets
are challenging and fun
to play and are
especially effective as
concert pieces.
As
a young musician I had
the privilege of playing
duets with many of the
world’s finest
tubists including Harvey
Phillips, John Fletcher,
Bob Pallansch, Chester,
Schmitz, Dan Perantoni,
Toby Hanks, Ron Bishop,
Winston Morris and Tommy
Johnson. I learned more
about playing music in
these duo sessions than
from any other musical
activity I have ever
experienced. Duets are
powerful teaching tools
for learning and
mastering rhythm,
phrasing and intonation
and for developing
overall
musicianship.

James
Jordan and The Same
Stream should be
commended for this album.
The Same Stream succeeds
in presenting this
collection of
twenty-first century
choral music with a high
degree of technical
accuracy. Their sectional
balance is nearly
perfect, and contains
impeccable intonation.
The performances on this
recording should have a
wide appeal to

These tracks represent
the first full CD of a
new American choral
ensemble: The Same
Stream. The
choir’s very
existence is the living
result of questions
regarding what it means
to sing together within a
deeply
“knittedâ€
community, a community
that shares answers to
commonly held questions
and beliefs about what
creates a truly human
resonance within and
among singers. For me,
this ensemble is a
continuation of beliefs
that have been my North
Star all of my career. To
hear those questions
answered and dreams
become a reality with the
establishment of The Same
Stream choir is deeply
humbling, gratifying and
life affirming. It is our
hope that these
recordings enrich those
who hear them—as
much as making them has
made our lives deeper and
more meaningful. —

Every
one remembers the first
time that they saw a
snake. Though fascinating
to some and terrifying to
others, few animals are
as universally
mesmerizing. Composer
Tyler Arcari has crafted
a very fun piece making
use of auxiliary
percussion instruments to
emulate a snake's hiss or
ominous rattle. With very
strong and interesting
melodic material, and
scored to make a
developing band sound
great, this piece is sure
to be a favorite among
students. Everyone
remembers the first time
that they saw a snake.
The majority of people
have a base fear of them,
while others have a
“heebie-jeebiesâ
experience. We all
know how the great
explorer Dr. Indiana
Jones felt about snakes,
especially when he
famously fell into a
snake pit during Raiders
of the Lost Ark. However
you feel about snakes, a
pit of them certainly
sounds like an
adventure.About the
work:Snake Pit uses a lot
of auxiliary percussion
instruments. Some of
these sounds are intended
to subtly mimic the
sounds that snakes make.
The maraca in m. 4, of
course, is a
rattler’s call!
The Chinese cymbal is
intended to sound like
the “hiss†of
a not-so-friendly
serpent. The eighth-note
pattern at m. 9 is used
throughout as a
“creepyâ€
effect using dynamic
contrast so take care to
emphasize this when
present.I enjoy the gong
as a “colorâ€
instrument in the band. I
try to balance it with
the low brass. Take care
that at m. 42 the gong is
not “front-and
center†but more of
a support for the nice
accented chords in the
low brass. Also, the
trumpets can become
spaced too much here. The
accents are more for
emphasis and less
space.

It was with
great pleasure that
received a commission
from my good friends at
the Johnstown
(Pennsylvania) Symphony
Orchestra, Istvan Jaray,
music director and
conductor, to write a
work for the opening of
their 1996-1997 season.
My intention was to write
a lively work which
highlighted the strengths
of this musical
organization while being
accessible and appealing
to their loyal audience
members. In trying to tie
something unique about
Johnstown to the work,
came up with the title,
Iridium, which is a term
that deals with the
production of metal.
During the writing of the
work, my friend,
colleague, and former
teacher, Hugh Johnson
passed away. Dr. Johnson,
faculty emeritus at
Indiana University of
Pennsylvania, was a
terrific musician who was
always enthusiastic about
orchestral music! It is
this enthusiasm and
energy that have tried to
capture in this new work,
which is dedicated to Dr.
Johnson's memory.
Finally, would like to
thank Maestro Jaray and
Tony Blackner for their
interest in my work. With
Iridium comes my best
wishes to Maestro Jaray
and the orchestra for a
fantastic new season of
music-making. -Jack Stamp

Evan
Goldman is plucked from
fast-paced, preteen New
York City life and
plopped into a sleepy
Indiana town following
his parents' divorce.
Surrounded by an array of
simpleminded middle
school students, he needs

the popularity pecking
order. Can he situate
himself on a comfortable
link of the food chain,
or will he dangle at the
end with the
outcasts?
