for Band. Par ANDERSON LEROY. This work was written by Leroy Anderson in 1951 and premiered by him when he recorded it for Decca. Interestingly, in 1956 the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps of Rockford, Illinois changed their original name from the Rockford Rangers after having heard the piece played by a different corps. The music emulates the sound of distant trumpets and soldiers marching, drawing closer to the listener bit by bit. As the music gains strength, the marching and trumpets get louder and after passing the audience, it slowly fades away as they disappear into the distance again. The title of Paul Mealor's, Spectred Light refers to the ghostly lights sometimes seen at night or twilight over rivers or lakes. Tales of the 'Spectred Lights' can be found in numerous folk tales around the world, and it is often depicted as a malicious character in these stories. In Welsh folklore, it is said that the light is 'fairy fire' held in the hand of a 'pwca' - a small goblin-like fairy that leads lone travelers off the beaten path at night. As the traveller follows the pwca through the marsh, the fire is extinguished, leaving the man lost. This short work for Flute, Clarinet and Piano is an attempt to depict, through sound, this strange phenomenon. The piece flickers into life and, though a series of asymmetric variations, leads the listener into a maze of aural colours. As the music reaches breaking point, it disappears upwards and dissolves into metal wind-chimes. Out of this, a short respite is heard before the music finally hurtles into its finale - a blaze of virtuosity. There existed at that time a famous Gipsy-band which has disappeared in the meantime. Their music was the first 'orchestral sonority' which came to the ear of the child. The forbears of these gipsies were known already more than hundred years ago. About 1800 some books of Hungarian dances were published in Vienna, one of which contained music 'after several gipsies from Galantha'. They have preserved the old Hungarian tradition. In order to continue it the composer has taken his principal subjects from these ancient editions. (Zoltán Kodály, 1934)

His earlier, inspired hit, the Trio for Clarinet op. 3, written in 1896, owes a great deal to his first important role model Johannes Brahms as far as inflection and instrumentation are concerned. And it was none other than Brahms himself who enthusiastically recommended the trio to his publisher Simrock, following the first performance in Vienna. As the autograph has disappeared, our edition follows the musical text in the first edition. It underwent careful examination and was cleared of numerous, partly blatant engraver's errors. The Prelude begins calm and, while tonality is exploited and significantly complex flourishes are heard, therelationship between the Saxophone and Piano remains exquisite. The movement then climaxes into the 6/8 Saltarello. The vast majority of violin sonatas from Vivaldi's time, including those of Vivaldi himself, have come down to us in the form of a score employing two staves: one for violin, and one for bass. This guarantees that, although portions of the work may be missing, what survives is textually complete. Exceptionally, five of Vivaldi's violin sonatas are preserved solely in a partbook for violin held by the Diözesanarchiv, Graz, the complementary part for cello having disappeared. The sonatas appear to date from the period between the Dresden group (1716-1717) and the Manchester set (c. 1726). Three of the sonatas, which all have four movements, possess partial concordances in other sources, with which they share two or three movements, but two of them - RV 11 and RV 37 - have so far been found only in Graz (with the exception of an incipit for RV 11 found in a contemporary thematic catalogue). This critical edition makes these two works available for study and performance. The text was a hymn to the Patron Saint of Lucca which was probably written by the composer himself. The work was so popular that by 1880 it had received three further performances, though it was also inserted in the Messa a 4 voci, after the Credo. Thereafter it disappeared from the music world and was only first rediscovered in the 1990s.
