Rothko's last painting
before the breakthrough
into his mature format.
In it the luminous color
fields of a classic
Rothko are inscribed
across the middle with
three delicate lines.
Describing this painting
and its pivotal position
in Rothko's work, Brian
O'Doherty observes:
'After this, the lines
disappear completely.' In
recent years gesture and
figuration have
disappeared from my
music. What used to be
background has emerged to
become a musical world
composed entirely of
floating color fields. In
this new world I've
changed media, moving
from the orchestra to
smaller combinations of
acoustical instruments
and
electronically-processed
sounds. I still think in
orchestral terms, but
this hybrid medium allows
me to create orchestral
textures for more
practical and readily
available ensembles.
Initially I imagined this
as a kind of monolithic
music -an entire piece as
one rich and complex
sound. Then I came to
hear it as homophonic or
heterophonic. And now -
in this musical world
that I thought was
completely free of lines
- I've come to hear a
polyphony of harmonic
clouds. Maybe the lines
never disappear
completely. Maybe
Christian Wolff was right
when he quipped: 'No
matter what we do, sooner
or later it all sounds

SPIN is a three-movement
study in various meanings
of the word spin. I. Gyre
has the character of a
whimsically spinning
object in a sort of
arena. II. Web is
essentially a slow
movement. It explores a
nearly static, sinewy
texture comprised of
slowly undulating chords
in which snippets of
melody emerge from the
notes held while the
chords disappear. Similar
to the first movement,
III. Spiral explores a
kinetic notion of
spinning, this time in
the form of rapidly
rising scales. SPIN
was composed in early
1998. Each of the
work’s three
movements assumes the
task of exploring a
different meaning of the
title.The first movement,
Gyre (as in gyroscope),
has the character of a
whimsically spinning
object in a sort of arena
– spinning and
bouncing off the walls
(like a spinning penny,
which bounces off of an
object unpredictably and
with somewhat explosive
force). The primary
musical idea consists of
high harmonics in the
violins set against a
rocking pulse in the
lower strings. This basic
texture is explored in
various guises as the
movement progresses.Web
is essentially a slow
movement. It explores a
nearly static, sinewy
texture comprised of
slowly undulating chords.
Snippets of melody emerge
from the notes held while
the chords disappear. The
music intensifies,
leading to an expected
climax (or anti-climax)
of pizzicatos, before
returning to the opening
material and winding
gently to a close.Like
Gyre, the third movement,
Spiral, explores a
kinetic notion of
spinning, this time in
the form of rapidly
rising scales. The formal
idea of this movement,
however, has the
character of a spiral,
with its tendency toward

author of the poems has
been identified as Josef

Janacek’s late

Isle, in this part, the
musical spotlight focuses
in on the green island of
Ireland and its great
wealth of traditional
folk music. The piece
opens with the air
‘My Lodging Is on
the Cold Ground’,
also known under the
title ‘Believe Me,
If All Those Endearing
Young Charms’
(bars 5-24). Next, we
hear another well-known
air ‘The Minstrel
Boy’ (bars 29-44).
Finally, the air
‘The Groves of
Blarney’, possibly
better known as
‘The Last Rose of
Summer’ (bars
53-68) is heard. Each air
is heralded by a short
introduction and brought
to an end by a short
conclusion. 2. Old
Kentucky Memories,
following an introduction
of 14 bars all attention
is claimed by the song
‘My Old Kentucky
Home’. As the
piece goes on, snippets
of memories emerge,
fleetingly, surfacing
fast, but quickly
disappearing again: this
is musically featured by
way of small motifs and
themes from other songs.
These can be heard
briefly, and then they
disappear, musing on Old
Kentucky until the
introduction returns to

Uppland, is a province in
Sweden that had a rich
folk music culture, like
the whole of Sweden, that
boasts many songs and
dances. A notable amount
of these songs and dances
have been composed in
minor keys, three of
which feature in this
part. First, we hear
‘Svensk
folkvisa’(bars
1-38), followed by the
famous
‘Värmlandsvisan
€™ (bars 39-67) and
then brought to an end by
‘Vexelsang’
(bars 68-end). 4.
Ratatouille, in this
part, no folk songs of
just one country or one
province are featured.
This piece is a mishmash
(or ratatouille), a
hotchpotch of three folk
songs with no significant
relation at all. In
succession, we hear a
song from Russia (bars
1-30), one from Japan
(bars 31-58) and one from
Australia (bars 59-end).
The composer of the
Russian song titled
‘The
Nightingale’ is
Alexander Alyabyev (1787
1851), but the composers
of the Japanese song
titled
‘Sakura’ and
the Australian
‘Waltzing
Matilda’ are
unknown.

1983 to the Western
Jutland Chamber Ensemble,
who premiered the work in
June the same year. A
quiet and pastoral music
with calling horns and
folk musical fragments of

stressed music among
others created by
mecanical sound
repetitions and
breathless musical
oscillations. The two
characters overshadow
eachother and incessantly
the peace is infiltrated
with mania so that the
resting points of the
music disappear. 'Trotto'
is the name of an old
Italian dance, which
rhythm is apparent as an

musical essay considering
the strikingly common
occurrence of people who
disappear from home never
to return. It takes the
form of two meditations
on traditional songs
which are played together
without a break,
amounting to a single
movement of about eleven
minutes duration. The

Gipsy tells of a woman
who of her own accord
leaves her home to roam
the unknown world with a
band of gipsies; and the

Droning
whirly tubes, wind gusts,
and other ominous sounds
depict the eerie
phenomenon known as ghost
lights. Opening with a
dark and menacing sound,
the piece soon moves into
a section fueled by
adrenaline and intensity.
As the ghost lights
appear, optional
flashlights add to the
spectacle as floating
orbs of light
spontaneously appear, and
then disappear. This is
