This is the 'a capella' version of Alexander L’Estrange’s beautiful mixed voice composition, Lute-book Lullaby. First performed by the choir Tenebrae, directed by Nigel Short, who also commissioned the work, it was first performed on 12th September 2002, at St Luke's, Chelsea, London at a concert in support of Downs Syndrome. The music scene took notice of Erik Satie (1866-1925) all of a sudden: The world premiere of his ballet 'Parade' on 18 May 1917 caused quite a scandal. The production which involved Sergey Diaghilev with his 'Ballets Russes', Pablo Picasso (scenery and costumes), Jean Cocteau (story) as well as Léonide Massine (choreography) divided the music scene of Paris, yet made the composer widely known. Satie who hardly had had any solid musical training and lived in Paris for almost all his life developed a new musical style, in deliberate rejection of the 'Wagnérisme' of his time. Classical form models, new harmonies, stylistic ease, meditative and clownish elements amalgamated in an original way, the perfect example being his '3 Gymnopédies' of 1888 the first of which was here arranged for a solo instrument with piano accompaniment: Thus, it is now possible, even for non-pianists, to play this famous miniature by Satie. Thanks to its easy playability, it can also be used for educational purposes. / Trompette Et Piano

Par TCHAIKOVSKI PIOTR ILITCH. The Nutcracker Suite is a piano arrangement of the concert version of the ballet of that name. Tchaikovsky used only part of the music for the ballet in the suite. The Overture, and the March which is the most important of the characteristic dances in the Suite, come from the first act of the ballet. The remaining dances originate from the second act. They are: The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, in which the leading part is, in the original composition, played typically by the celeste almost all the way through; the fiery Russian 'Trepak' which reminds us of Tchaikovsky's national origins; the Arab Dance tinged with a gentle melancholy; the Chinese Dance with its tripping ostinato rhythm; the graceful Dance of the Reed Flutes; and finally the longest piece in the Suite: the Waltz of the Flowers in which Tchaikovsky, writing in the penultimate year of his life, showed his musical affinity with Johann Strauss. The Nutcracker Suite was perfomed for the first time, with great success, on 7 March 1892 at the Ninth Symphony Concert of the Russian Musical Society in St Petersburg./ Répertoire / Piano 4 Mains

The piece itself was written in 1931 during the summer holidays after the end of Britten's first year at the Royal College of Music, at the age of seventeen. Having been advised to send the original score to the Camargo Society, then the foremost promoter of ballet in the UK, but Britten was without success and never revised the work./ Répertoire / Conducteur

The final movement of the Sonata in A major KV 331 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the Rondo Alla Turca, is one of the most famous piano pieces of all time. Once only familiar to musical experts, later a universal piece for all piano pupils, its opening melody is now even omnipresent as an alienated sinus tone-like mobile phone ring tone. Fazil Say's arrangement, originally created as an effective encore, follows on from this popularity. After the first eight bars have been presented in original form, typical elements of jazz superimposed on the still recognisable classical foundations can be discovered, such as syncopation of the top notes and ornamentation through chromatic blue notes, embedded in the at times frenzied chains of semiquavers. In the spirit of the work's improvisatory character, Say likes to perfom his Alla Turca Jazz in different combinations, for example accompanied by jazz singers of with orchestra. It may appear strange that Fazil Say, who was born in Turkey and - when not on tour - is still resident in that country, does not bring back Mozart's interpretation of genuine Turkish music closer to its own roots, particularly as many of his compositions such as Black Earth or the Violin Sonata are characterised by a subtle amalgamation of the Classical-Romantic tradition, Turkish folk music and elements of jazz. In a further Mozart arrangement, the ballet music Patara premiered in Vienna in 2006, composed on the basis of the Rococo-like theme from the first movement of the same A-major Sonata (wich enjoys almost as great popularity as the Alla Turca theme), Say utilised the connection which was absent in Alla Turca, albeit in the opposite direction. In the ballet music, the piano symbolises Western culture and the Ney flute Oriental culture, communcated atmosperically by austere percussion instrumentation and soprano vocalisation. / Date parution : 2021-12-09/ Répertoire / 2 Pianos

Appalachian Spring was composed in 1943-44 as a ballet for Miss Martha Graham on a commission from the Elisabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation. It was first performed by Miss Graham and her company at the Coolidge Festival in the Libarary of Congress, Washington, D.C., on October 30, 1994. The present version is scored for the original chamber ensemble of thirteen instruments. It is a condensed version of the ballet (identical with the original suite derived from the ballet for symphony orchestra), which retains all essential features but omits those sections in which the interest is primarily choreographic. In 1945 Appalachian Spring received the Pulitzer Prize for music as well as the award of the Music Critics Circle of New York for the outstanding theatrical work of the season.
