Drunken Sailor — the sequel
This needs a plaintive tone especially in the upper register where the dynamics are particularly important. To capture the mood of the piece those slurs in bars 35 and 36, for example, might even be close to a glissando. Use your imagination to recreate the sailor’s state of health!

Th e Vulgar Boatman
Not only more hidden melodies but more appalling puns! (Volga Boatman for those not versed in Russian folksongs). This is like a waltz: it is written in 3/4 time but played so as to give the impression of one beat in bar. The melodies need to be well sustained so that we hear four, eight or even more bars as a single phrase. Clues for the musical detective:- in addition to the Volga Boatman, you might spot just a hint of Sailing down the River on a Sunday Afternoon, We Sail the Ocean Blue (H.M.S. Pinafore), The Eton Boating Song and even Wagner’s Flying Dutchman.

Last Tango in Harris
Everyo ne must surely know these thinly disguised Scottish tunes, but can you make them sound like a tango? Bear in mind that tangos are not jazz: the rhythm is quite strict, but the tango character is in the tone and the phrasing. Notice how expressive the occasional shorter note value can be, as in bars 4 and 5 in the bassoon part.

Rheu manian Stretches
Or was that Rumanian Sketches? This is a chance to play the main melody in two registers of the bassoon. Try to make a good even sound in both octaves. This piece requires careful counting since the phrases in the bassoon part don’t always begin where you might expect. Think of this piece as a song.

This three-part suite is rich in dances and full of contrasting styles and dynamics. The title of the work is a pun on the term ‘concerto grosso’, a piece in parts for a group of solo instruments and orchestra. In Contrasto Grosso small groups in the band perform as soloists, interpreting contrasting renaissance style fragments.

Deze dansrijke suite bestaat uit drie delen die worden gekenmerkt door contrasten in stijl, dynamiek en instrumentatie. De titel van de compositie is een woordspeling op het concerto grosso, een meerdelig werk voor een groep solo-instrumentenen orkest. Ook in Contrasto Grosso treden kleinere groepen in het orkest solistisch op met contrasterende, renaissancistische tussenfragmenten.

Diese dreiteilige Suite ist ein Wortspiel auf das Concerto Grosso“, ein mehrteiliges Werk für eine Gruppe von Soloinstrumenten und Orchester. Die fünf Solostimmen ins diesem Werk können beliebig besetzt werden. In allen drei Teilen interpretieren die Solisten häufig kontrastierende renaissanceartige Fragmente, während das Orchester die folkloristischen Elemente zum Ausdruck bringt.

Contrasto Grosso est une suite dansante en trois mouvements de caractères et de styles variés. Le titre de l’œuvre dérive du terme concerto grosso, une forme musicale dont la structure se caractérise par une instrumentation alternant les passages orchestraux en tutti et les passages instrumentaux joués par des groupes solistes. On obtient alors une grande diversité de couleurs et de nuances donnant l’œuvre une expressivité très contrastée.

His sudden passing was a shock, and I expressed my sadness in this work. It was premiered that year by the NSU orchestra at their Winter concert. In w000, after conductor-composer Coleridge Taylor Perkinson gave the work its second performance in Chicago (with the ensemble of the Center For Black Music Reasearch), I decided to add it to my catalog of orchestra works. The designation Essay refers to the fact that the piece is based on one idea (like a literary essay). In this case the musical idea (or motive) is made from the initials of my deceased friend, Glenn Hull (G and H in music are represented by the pitches G and B-natural). These two notes are sounded throughout the work in tribute to him.

Hans Winterberg, born in Prague in 1901, lived through almost the entire period of the 20th century and was influenced as a composer by its most important artistic innovations. Already a brilliant pianist as an adolescent, he studied with Alois Hába and Alexander von Zemlinsky in Prague. Both his life and his music reflect the Austrian-Czech-Jewish cultural symbiosis; he saw himself as a bridge builder between Western and Eastern, i.e. Slavic, cultures. Owing to his Jewish ancestry, he was deported to the Terezin concentration camp after the annexation of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany. He was the only Jewish representative of the Czech musical avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s to survive the Shoah and, in 1947, followed his non-Jewish wife and their daughter to the FRG in the course of the expulsion of the German-speaking population from Czechoslovakia. Winterberg's fascinating oeuvre, which was kept under lock and key in a German music archive for years after his death, is now being made accessible in first editions due to a cooperation between the Exilarte Center for Banned Music at the University of Music in Vienna and Boosey & Hawkes. The first printed edition is Winterberg's Cello Sonata, composed in 1951, in which all the characteristics of his unmistakable personal style come to the fore: dance-like energy, polyrhythm, intimate yet unsentimental melos, subtle handling of folkloristic material, and an unerring sense of form and balance. This work is of medium technical and great interpretative difficulty.
