88 Grieg arranged four pieces from his incidental music for Ibsenâ??s verse drama Peer Gynt to form an orchestral suite (Op. 46). This was followed in 1891 by a second orchestral suite (Op. 55) again comprising 4 pieces. Both suites quickly became established in the concert repertoire and contributed significantly to Griegâ??s international fame. He made piano arrangements of both suites and published them simultaneously with the orchestral suites in 1888 and 1893. Grieg subsequently made further adjustments in the piano pieces: shortening some, for example â??Morningâ??, and expanding others like â??The Death of Ã?seâ??. Overall, Grieg reduces the dramatic orchestral conception in favour of a more intimate expression and more restrained effects.

Minuet BWV 929 comes from the collection entitled Small Preludes and Fughettas and was probably written as teaching material. However, this was not where Baeyens' exploration of musical language was to end. The 1956 Piranesi Suite for flute and cello, written three decades after Baeyens' graduation from the Flemish Conservatory, marks an intriguing phase of his composition. Baeyens tended towards older forms - the Suite, for example, is afive-movement work, though each movement is drawn through a more modern glass - it's hardly usual to hear a Sinfonia, Toccata, Moto Perpetuo, Aria, and Corrente together. The resemblance towards older forms breaks down as the music is further examined - the Sinfonia is full of transposed, repetitive melodies that play off each other with sly rhythmic twists (much in the manner of Stravinsky), the Toccata is a powerful solo cello showpiece, and the Aria is a delicate flute melody winding above bitonal cello pizzicato. The final Corrente, belying its name, brings the piece to a close with an accelerating back-and-forth of melody and accompaniment. After the Jazz Suite for Flute and Piano (ED 20922), this Jazz Suite ventures still further into the realms of jazz idiom and many passages – such as the Cadenza in Daydream and the final Allegretto section of the Variations – even resemble Bebop improvisations. The underlying formal structures, in particular ternary form and variations, are nevertheless firmly rooted in the classical tradition. An alternative clarinet part has been included as this instrument shares a similar range to the alto saxophone and is likewise equally at home in both concert halls and jazz clubs.
