Mr. Sauer has brilliantly taken the solo Piano part and divided it between solo Trombone and Piano.

Trombonists will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the solo repertoire.

The Two Dances (in tenor clef) are about 6 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

The ALLEGRO DE CONCIERTO in C-sharp major, Op. 46, is a virtuosic showpiece for piano by Enrique Granados, composed between 1903 and 1904. The Suite on Galician songs was written in 1899 and debuted on 31 October that same year, as part of a series of concerts organised by the Philharmonic Society of Barcelona at the Teatro Lirico, under the direction of Joan Lamote de Grignon.

The work is made up of four movements: I. Canto de la manana (‘Morning song'), also known as En la montana (‘In the mountains'), II. Danza Scherzo (Galician folk dance), III. Morrina (‘Homesickness') and IV. La Fiesta (finale). The entire composition is laced with Galician folk melodies, which serve as the pretext for developing a piece that is entirely descriptive and scenic in nature, by means of a meticulous and precise orchestration of great technical and folkloric interest. The work reveals not only Granados' great technical expertise as orchestrator, but also his imagination and intelligence when recreating the most distinctive sounds of traditional Galician folk music. He achieves this effect through a masterful use of instrumentation and experimentation throughout the 23 minute duration of this magnificent suite.

Zarabanda by Enrique Granados comes from his set of 12 Spanish Dances, most often performed on guitar. This third dance, also called a fandango, is particularly well-suited for string orchestra with a beautifully elegant melody and upbeat dance feel, combining the style of flamenco with the classical tradition of the time period. Performers should pay particular attention to articulations, especially the contrasting of staccato with legato bowing. The performance should be fun and light throughout, with an emphasis on the dynamic, melodic, and rhythmic contrast.

Without doubt, the most important chamber music work by Malats, and one of his finest compositions, is his Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano in B Flat Major. It was composed in 1898.

Malats dedicated the Trio to one of the greatest composers of all time, Camille Saint-Saëns, close personal friend of both Malats and Granados. An unknown gem of the chamber music repertoire, this Modernist work is superior in form, technique and musical content to similar work by Granados, Breton, Chapi and others.

Malats had considerable knowledge and experience with the trio form. In 1894 at the Sala erard in Paris he performed four trios by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Godard and Saint-Saëns with C. Flesch and Hasselmann. Given his experiences with chamber music it is not surprising that Malats exhibited such confidence and security in writing his Trio maintaining perfect balance and dialogue between the three instruments which he achieved through masterful control of the formal structure. This work has a rich harmonic language and none of the Nationalist qualities of his previous pieces. Instead, it reveals Malats proximity to then current European music yet, at the same time, exhibits his personal style and musical knowledge.
