The Full Score of Saariaho's Verblendungen for Orchestra and Tape. The piece is dedicated to Esa-Pekka Salonen who conducted the premiere performance in Helsinki Finland with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in April 1984. With both orchestra and tape working in opposite directions of the tonal spectrum this is a fantastic and expressive work that balances the contrast the two elements. Despite these tonal differences the tape and orchestra join together in an inseparable sound world and form a breath-taking orchestral piece that moves through jagged grainy sounds to smoother more reflective moods.

Sibelius completed this work in February 1923 and conducted the premiere at Helsinki on February 19 of that same year. His first reference to the work in 1918 described it as wild and passionate in character. Dark with pastoral contrasts. Probably in 4 movements...intensifying in a dark orchestral swell [until] the main theme is drowned. At the same time he cautioned that his plan could change — and how it did! — depending on the way my musical thinking develops. I am always a slave to my themes and obey their demands.

Par LEIVISKA HELVI. Finnish composer Helvi Leiviskä (1902-1982) created a broad-based output of orchestral works, solo songs and chamber music. Her style could be described as moderate modernism, deriving influences from multiple sources such as late Romanticism, Symbolism, Expressionism, Existentialism and Neo-Classicism. Leiviskä's output is characterised by philosophical and religious themes, images of nature and narrative structures. Many of her works focus on human existential angst and spiritual searching and growth. Helvi Leiviskä originally completed her Piano Quartet in A major op. 1 in 1926 but revised it a decade later, in 1935. Written for the traditional piano quartet lineup (violin, viola, cello and piano), the work is in three movements and has a duration of about 25 minutes. It features religious and ecstatic imagery such as may be found in French, German or Russian neo-Romantic styles. Leiviskä's Piano Quartet is considered one of the cornerstones of her chamber music output. Its early version was premiered in two parts at student recitals of the Helsinki Music Institute (the 1st movement in 1925 and the 2nd and 3rd movements in 1926). The revised version was performed in full by Timo Mikkilä (piano), Sulo Aro (violin), Ilmo Ranta (viola) and Pentti Rautawaara (cello) on Finnish radio in 1939. The work was also on the programme of Leiviskä's second composition concert in 1945, being performed on that occasion by Jussi Jalas (piano), Erik Cronvall (violin), Erik Karma (viola) and Yrjö Selin (cello). Two commercial recordings have been released (Finlandia Classics 2012 and Telos Music 2016). It is published for the first time 2022 with an extensive foreword by Susanna Välimäki. The product includes the full score (piano part) and a set of string parts. Duration: c. 25'. Have a look inside by clicking 'sample'. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Quatuor avec Piano

The hardback edition of Magnus Lindberg's Kraft (1983–85) - for Soloists and Orchestra with live Electronics. KRAFT was premiered at the Helsinki Festival by the Toimii Ensemble and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen on 4 September 1985. KRAFT was also the recipient of the Nordic Music Prize 1988. All the musical material of the piece has been prepared with a micro-computer with programmes written in FORTH allowing a very flexible control of rhythm and chord processes. The programme is based on a formalization of rules for creation of rhythmic events gestures and temporal processes and an environment allowing a graphical output for metric notation. Similar rule-based programmes control the creation of harmonic material by a comparison to previously defined and accepted chordal successions given by the composer. The control of amplification and spatialization of the soloists during the performance is done with an application written in PreFORM and running on a Macintosh computer allowing a precise control of movement in the hall in real time.

Huilukonsertto. Par ENGLUND EINAR. Einar Englund?s (1916-1999) Flute Concerto (1985) is beyond dispute one of his greatest works. Its finest attributes are its rich melodic invention, colourful instrumentation and immediate message. Add to these its rewarding solo part, and the result is truly one of his best concertos ? and works. He himself did not hesitate to regard it as such. It was premiered in Helsinki on September 16, 1985, having been completed at Ljugarn on the Swedish island of Gotland at the end of June. The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Leif Segerstam, and the soloist was the concerto?s dedicatee, Mikael Helasvuo. The Flute Concerto opens with a Ritornello in which the flute's playful, dance-like passages make sharp contrast with the orchestra's heroic stance. In the mellow Canzona which follows, the flute plays rhapsodically over repetitive orchestral figures. The work's 'action-packed' finale hints at parody in its military march-like opening, but also gives rein to the lyricism already familiar from the second movement. This product includes the solo flute part and the piano reduction. The orchestral study score (composer?s manuscript) is available for sale (product number 9790550117471). The performance material is available for hire from the publisher. Duration: c. 23? Par FREEMAN ALEX. Alex Freeman?s Under the arching heavens: A Requiem (2018) was commissioned by Nils Schweckendiek and the Helsinki Chamber Choir to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Finnish civil war. Structured around the Latin liturgy of the mass for the dead, the work has a duration of more than an hour and also incorporates poems in Finnish, Swedish and English, reflecting both the specific reason for the commission and the universality of human suffering caused by war. In the non-liturgical texts chosen by Freeman, birds are a recurring image, as is that of a mother and child. The work ends with lines by Walt Whitman from a poem written in the aftermath of the American Civil War; lines described by the composer as ?some of the most comforting poetry in the English language.? Also included on the disc is A Wilderness of Sea, another recent choral piece which draws on works by Shakespeare, and the poet?s images of the sea, and of mankind?s relationship with it. Contents: I. Sydämeni laulu (Aleksis Kivi) II. Requiem aeternam III. Sequentia Dies irae Thrushes (Siegfried Sassoon) (Rex tremendae) Fientliga stjärnor (Edith Södergran) (Inter oves) IV. Sanctus V. For Contralto solo Chorus and Orchestra. Looking outside the purely Western Europe tradition for inspiration and freshness Karl Jenkins sets the 13th-century Stabat Mater text in Latin and English and has extended it to a universal depiction of grief with six other texts some of them from ancient sources in a variety of languages. The scoring is for voices and modern symphony orchestra augmented by indigenous instruments such as the Darabuca (Hand Drum) and Riq (Small Tambourine) and the Mey (Woodwind). The work has been recorded by EMI Classics performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra andChoir the EMO Choir of Helsinki with soloists Jurgita Adamonyte and Belinda Sykes conducted by the composer. By turns dramatic and reflective the twelve-movement work incorporates the original 13th-century Latin sequence alongside additional texts such as Ave verum corpus (originally composed for Bryn Terfel) Lament by Carol Barratt and English texts derived from ancient Babylonian and medieval Persian sources.

The Suite is a student exercise, first performed 13. 4. 1889 at a musical soirée at the Helsinki Music Institute. Ferruccio Busoni, who was teacher of piano at the Institute at the time, described the first performance as follows: “We sharpened our concentration as we realised that we were about to hear something quite beyond the usual standard for student works…”. In the A major suite, colour comes to the fore for the first time as a major element in Sibelius’s music. The emphasis on sonic texture is joined – somewhat unusually for such an early work – by a fairly bold handling of rhythm and harmony. Unfortunately only the first three movements of the suite have survived in tact. The concept of the missing Gigue has survived, however, and is included in this publication./ Répertoire / Trio à Cordes

This work was commissioned by Rudolf Steiner Foundation. It is dedicated to Anssi Karttunen who gave the first performance in Helsinki on 10th September 2000.Sept papillons was the first piece Saariaho wrote after her operaL'Amour de loin and it was partly written during the rehearsals of the opera in Salzburg. One can sense the desire to find a new world which has nothing to do with the opera neither in style nor in language. From the metaphors ofthe opera which all have an eternal quality - love yearning and death - she moved now to a metaphor of the ephemeral: butterfly. Also from the long time-spans of the opera she moved to these seven miniatures which each seem tobe studies on a different aspect of fragile and ephemeral movement that has no beginning nor end.

Commissioned by the first Sibelius Conductor's Competition held in Helsinki in May 1995 as an obligatory piece to be rehearsed by all the competitors Arena was performed in its totality at the annual Avanti! Chamber Orchestra'sfestival in Porvoo (Finland). Thematic thinking has never been a main feature in Lindberg's music but here horizontal lines (one would not yet dare to call them melodies) gain some independence for example in ornamental figuresand in the intense cello solo around the middle of the piece. Arena also reveals some clearly new material - Lindberg has talked about Beethoven-like formal thinking referring to a passage where the sense of movement seems toaccelerate to an extreme so that finally one perceives only a motionless surface. Another new element - which was already used to some extent at the warmly hovering ending of Aura - is the almost romantic sound world and thesuspension of the harmonies in the final climax which can make one think of Mahler and Berg or Lindberg's grand predecessor and compatriot Sibelius. This is the Score published by Chester Music; the duration of thepieces is approximately 16 minutes.
