The cantata dates from Bach's time in Weimar. The instrumental scoring of four violas and basso continuo - in the Leipzig performances enhanced by two recorders doubling viola I and II at the octave - is unique in Bach's cantata oeuvre. It lends a dark, luxurious sound to the four movements which is gently illuminated by the recorders. The work - with its instrumental sinfonia, a short secco recitative and an extended accompagnato recitative (both of which contain arioso inserts), a short soprano aria and a simple closing chorale - makes no great demands on the performing forces. The word "hymn" comes from the Greek "hymnos", meaning a festive song.  To hymnologists (people who study hymns), the HYMN is the poetry, the lyrics, which is then set to a HYMN TUNE.  Many wonderful hymn tunes have been used over the centuries with several completely different sets of words.  The name of a hymn tune seldom matches the name of its hymn, and most people refer to hymns by their poetic names rather than their tune names.  However, some hymn tunes are so powerful, so flexible and so rooted in the collective social consciousness that they transcend whatever poetry is put with them.  Several tunes in this set have been used for many poems, most of which are unfamilar.  But we know the melody instantly!  Written for two violins and piano, both a viola and cello part are include to substitue for the 2nd violin.  Hymns (tunes) include: 1. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.

The Kleine geistliche Konzerte by Heinrich Schutz represent solo vocal music right at the height of its time, the result of his (second) journey to Italy and his encounter with Claudio Monteverdi's musico-dramatic works. Part I of the Kleine Geistliche Konzerte, published in 1636, can already by seen as a pattern book of compositions, and based on their structure Schutz was then able to set more extensive pieces. This applies even more impressively to the second book because of its often daring harmonies and more intensive declamation; the book was issued in 1639 and is now newly published in the Stuttgart Schutz Edition in the original keys and with the original order of pieces newly recreated according to the first printed edition.
