The bagatelle was written between 1808 and 1810. It was first published in 1867 by the Beethoven scholar Ludwig Nohl who still had access to Beethoven’s autograph. What has survived, however, is an extensive autograph draft that Beethoven substantially revised around 1822 for a planned but then unrealised collection of bagatelles and which differs significantly from the known printed version. The critical edition by the renowned Beethoven scholar Mario Aschauer comes to new conclusions. It offers, in addition to the version of the first printing from 1867, a transcription of Beethoven's draft that makes the changes to the 2nd version visible in grey print as well as a performable completion by the editor of that 2nd version. Par FIBICH ZDENEK. The Czech composer Zdenek Fibich (1850–1900) had a keen interest in classical German literature. It therefore comes as no surprise that he had already set songs to texts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe while still a student at the Leipzig Conservatory. Between 1865 and 1871 he composed 16 songs on texts by this famous German author for voice and piano. Ten of them have survived: the song “An den Mond”, dating from 1869, and nine further songs from Goethe’s novel “Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre” were composed immediately after Fibich’s return to Prague in 1871. Score + Parties. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Beethoven wrote his Horn Sonata op. 17 for Johann Wenzel, one of the most famous horn players of his day. According to an anecdote from Beethoven's pupil Ferdinand Ries, he only completed it on the day before the première. Nevertheless, the piece was a rousing success. As the horn part demands a masterly technique, the publisher of the first print, Tranquillo Mollo et Comp., issued the piece in 1801 with an alternative part for violoncello. Since the autograph score has not survived, Jonathan Del Mar has based his scholarly-critical edition mainly on this first print. With Il Teuzzone, RV 736, the collected edition of operas by Antonio Vivaldi gains a new volume that brings to completion the pair of operas written by the ?Red Priest? for Mantua. Premiered during the last days of 1718, the opera preceded by a few months the production of Tito Manlio, RV 738 (PR 1411). This edition of Teuzzone, the first in modern times, is based on the two complete sources to have survived: a copy originating from the composer?s own archive (Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria di Torino, Raccolta Mauro Foà 33) and the one today housed in Berlin (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin ? Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Musikabteilung, N. Mus, ms. 125), which was made for the Mantuan production. Additionally, numerous secondary sources have been collated. An appendix to the volume contains the musical materials discarded by Vivaldi during the period preceding the opera?s premiere. The supporting texts for the edition report on new findings that have emerged from archival and documentary research. It has been established, for instance, that the aria Tu, mio vezzoso (I.03) is a borrowing from Alessandro Severo by Antonio Lotti, while the aria Tornerò, pupille belle (II.02) is a reworking of Nelle mie selve natie, an aria in Scanderbeg, RV 732. These examples reveal the pasticcio-like nature of this Vivaldi opera. In the section concerned with the description of the sources, which includes a meticulous codicological examination of the source in Turin, a bold attempt has been made to reconstruct the phases that the composition of Vivaldi?s opera underwent, an operation that sheds light on the inner workings of Vivaldi?s atelier. In addition, the close relationship of this score to a work with the same title staged in Turin with music by G. Casanova and A. S. Fiorè is analysed./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano
