Irène (Eneri) Gorainoff was born as Irene Biriukov on 15th November 1897 in Ostrogoschk. Her parents were an officer Biriukov and Maria Bronikowsky (1874-1928). After a short marriage the mother married Alexei Gorainoff (1872-1935), who adopted the little Irène. At the age of twelve years Irène Gorainoff was a well known pianist. She also composed and had already written over eighty works, when publisher Julius Heinrich Zimmermann signed on some of her works in 1910. In the same year she was allowed to record piano rolls on the famous Welte-Mignon reproducing piano. On 17th May 1916 she married Sergei Mikhailovich Sukhotin (1887-1926) in St. Petersburg. He was an army officer in the regiment Preobrazhensky. In December of the same year her husband became one of the murderers of Russian itinerant preacher and confidant of the Empress: Rasputin. After his death, Irène emigrated to France. In 1946, she married again in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois the Russian Paul Petrovich Borovsky (1892-1955). Opera in three acts. Par JANACEK LEOS. Leos Janacek began composing his seventh opera, 'The Cunning Little Vixen', based on the popular feuilletons of Rudolf Tesnohlidek, in January 1922. The first copy of the score, was completed by Vaclav Sedlacek in October 1923 but is now lost, while the second copy was prepared by Jaroslav Kulhanek in January 1924.
The world premiere took place on 6 November 1924 under the direction of Ota Zitek and was conducted by Frantisek Neumann. The vocal score was published in Czech before the event and then again in 1925 along with the German translation by Max Brod, which is something of a separate version of the text in its own right.
This volume of the complete edition reprints the critical edition by Jiri Zahradka, which was published by Universal Edition in 2010. The present edition newly includes transcriptions of the libretto in three languages (Cz/Eng/Ger) and a detailed Critical Report (Eng). The edition draws on all extant sources and - in consideration of Janacek's active participation in rehearsals for the premiere production - integrates both the dynamics of Frantisek Neumann and the performance markings of Sir Charles Mackerras into the musical text./ Répertoire / Chant et Orchestre

Miguel Alcdzar was born in Mexico City on April 26 1942. He followed a professional career which involved activities in the fields of performance, pedagogy, musicology and composition. He gave the first performances of the Concertino by Blas Galindo, with the composer himself conducting the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, the Concierto of Manuel Ponce, in its original version, the Concerto of Michael Horvit, which was dedicated to Alcázar, the Concierto of Enrique Santos, with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, and the 24 Preludios of Ponce. His recorded output includes music for baroque guitar of music in the manuscript 1560 in the Biblioteca Nacional, works by Bach and Weiss for lute, as well as unpublished music by Ponce and other Latin-American composers. Alcázar has been a faculty member of the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Conservatorio Nacional de Música, where he received his degree with honors in 1972, and later at the University of Veracruz. His publications of Mexican music were published by the Liga de Compositores de Mexico, the University of Veracruz, Tecla Editions of London and Editions Orphée. miguel.jpg (6157 bytes)The 12 Preludios were written by Miguel Alcázar as the result of his first two trips to the Soviet Union. During the first trip, in November-December of 1983, he met Nikita Koshkin during the presentation of Alcázar's work at the Union of Composers in Moscow. A few days later, he promised to write something for him, as a way of commemorating the beginning of their friendship, if Alcázar would write also something for Koshkin. Both agreed upon this and when Alcázar went back to the Soviet Union, for the International Music Festival held in May of 1984, Koshkin gave him The Elves, a suite in five movements. The composition of the 12 Preludios was started during the Christmas vacation of 1984 and terminated by mid-January of 1985. Both works, The Elves and the 12 Preludios were premiered by Alcázar at the Ponce Hall of the Fine Arts Palace in Mexico City on March 15 of 1988.

Hungarian Rondo was composed by Zoltán Kodály in December 1917, drawing on material from the incidental music he had written for Zsigmond Móriczs play Pacsirtaszó (Skylarking). The rondo form is shaped out of four new-style Hungarian folk songs and an instrumental dance melody. Kodály prepared the piece in two somewhat different versions, one for two clarinets, two bassoons and string orchestra, and the other for cello and piano. The orchestral version received its first performance in Vienna on 12 January 1918 at a 'historical concert' organized by the War Ministry of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The cello version was premi?red by Miklós Zsámboky and Ottó Herz at the Budapest Academy of Music on 4 November 1927. Neither version appeared in print in the composers lifetime. The version for string orchestra was edited in 1976 by Ferenc Farkas and István Máriássy (and is distributed as a hire material under the order number K-1). The cello version appears here in print for the first time. The publication is based on the composers surviving manuscript and a contemporary manuscript copy of this. The fingerings are by the editor. / Violoncelle Et Piano

Par ADES THOMAS. ''Still Sorrowing' - a lament which is also a homage to Romantic sentiments - proved to make the most ingenious use of a 'prepared' piano that I have heard in a long time. While a recurrent plaint tintinnabulates at the top of the piano's range and deep chords resonate at the bottom, some muffling device allows intricate figures and rhythms at mid-keyboard to rattle hollowly - a haunting sound-scape and too strikingly musical to seem tricksy.'

PIANO SONATA NO. 1 was written in 1955. Fiser worked on it during his last year at the Prague Conservatoire under the supervision of Emil Hlobil. The piece is one of Fiser?s early works which still respect a traditional compositional approach. Unlike his major and late piano sonatas, this sonata has three movements, each representing the traditional Classical-Romantic form. The sonata was premiered by Fiser?s fellow-student and friend Antonín Jemelík in Theatre D34 on 30 January 1956. The new setting for this piece is based on the single edition to date (SNKLHU, 1957) only with regard to a few inconsistencies in the score was it necessary to consult the composer?s manuscript (kept at the National Museum ? WOLFGANG) Piano, Voix Universal Edition
Kammeroper Nr. 2. Par RIHM WOLFGANG. Chamber opera does not mean “little opera...(+)
Kammeroper Nr. 2. Par RIHM WOLFGANG. Chamber opera does not mean “little opera.” On the same scale as chamber music is to the symphony, it is rather the other way of talking onstage. The movable apparatus permits sophisticated voice-leading. A large ensemble demands simple conception to achieve the complexity it perhaps intends; this can be formulated more sharply and nuanced in a chamber ensemble. Therefore it is the subject which this type of presentation must sustain – or, better, provoke.
Büchner’s Lenz
is a description of the conditions within a process of collapse, moments of destruction already occurred but not yet accepted, evident in the points of contact with the environment. And it was those points of contact which Michael Fröhling attempted to reconstruct onstage. Lenz’s distraught state is always the same; only the proximity of the environment to that distraught state grows and ebbs.
The musical consequence
An hour of extreme chamber music results from this description: always bound for the main character – actually, not a commentary, but the main character himself as a multilayered level of action. Although Lenz acts on many levels – or tries to or believes he is – he has no room to manoeuvre. That is why he is also tightly interwoven in his sonic surroundings; the voices which only he hears are just as much himself as the two men with whom he foregathers (the liberal pragmatist Oberlin and the alert merchant who always “does the right thing” in every situation) – they evoke responses which he deeply desires. Omnipresent Friederike is just as much his inner world as Nature is – Nature, which he can no longer perceive unless it is personified, enlivened or dead.
Therefore, the music’s task is both to motivate the “situation” (atmospherically) and to be the psychological constant (via a network of entangled references per se) in an action as it is played out.
The compositional process
December 1977 to June 1978 – a period identical to the stepwise understanding of an existence as that of Jakob Lenz. Yet the more the historical figure became precisely attendant in my intellect in terms of data and atmosphere, the more it retreated in favour of a cipher of disturbance as I began to understand Lenz.
Thence the explanation for the failure of the attempts to approach him – including my attempt to interpret him via musical representation – because, essentially, Lenz himself is the failure. Only the naked stages of that failure remain portrayable, i.e. including the failure of those who wish to “help” Lenz, for example, while Lenz himself is already trapped inextricably in a state of complete destruction. I tried to compose my way into that situation as far as possible; the insistence of several rhythmic and harmonic configurations is the palpable expression of the main character’s ever-recurring rigidity. One sound pervades the entire work.
The musical stage
For me, this is a place where very magical and very human things take place. In Jakob Lenz, the human aspects often switch to magical ones, since the realism of a self-suasive, unhinged soul takes on surreal traits – or we simply cannot understand that otherwise except as not being real. A character like Jakob Lenz on the stage is complex due to the fact alone that it harbours many stages within itself, and music must represent those constantly present stages.
I have tried to do so in the most direct way – by not cleanly separating the musical layers, but keeping them constantly in evidence until they must break forth, each in accord with its own dramaturgy. In an overview, the large form takes on aspects of a rondo, performed in overlapping layers – a type of rondo relief, since perspectives of psychological proximity and distance are indeed formulated musically as atmospheric relations.
Above all: the thread on which Jakob Lenz hangs is the current onto the listeners’ hearts.

Text From 20.000 Leagues Under The Sea. Par BRYARS GAVIN. This piece is one of a series of works that take texts or imagery from the work of Jules Verne. Here the text is taken from 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, a section in which Professor Aronnax describes the scene outside the Nautilus where countless varieties of sea-creatures escort the submarine along the current of the mysterious underwater Black River.
Coincidentally the first work that I wrote using Verne as a source, the cantata Effarene (1984), sets an earlier portion of the same chapter for its closing movement and I find the objectivity and invention of Verne's language a constant stimulus. As Raymond Queneau said of Verne: 'What a style! Nothing but nouns.'
The piece was written for a concert given by the organist Christopher Bowers-Broadbent at Leicester Cathedral in January 1991 and later recorded by him with soprano Sarah Leonard for ECM New Series in 1993.

Par JANACEK LEOS. Janácek's 2nd String Quartet, Intimate Letters, is regarded as a highlight of the modern string quartet literature. It was written during the composer’s last year of life, between 29 January and 19 February 1928, inspired by the ageing Janáèek's exceptional love for Kamila Stösslová. The Moravian Quartet devoted themselves to this impressive work; Janácek attended a total of three of their rehearsals in May and June 1928. This had several consequences, including his abandoning his original idea of using a viola d'amore. After Janácek's unexpected death (12 August 1928) the uncertain genesis of the work became the greatest problem of the IntimateLetters : the surviving copies were not definitively authorised. The editors of this new edition have reverted to Janácek's autograph sketches as the main, most reliable source and using these as a basis, have reconstructed the work as it stood at the point of Janácek's death. The musical text, taken from the Critical Complete Edition of the Works of Leoš Janácek (Vol. E/4), therefore contains clear differences in comparison with older editions./ Répertoire / Quatuor à Cordes

The Gallipoli Campaign took place between April 1915 and January 1916 and marked the first significant military engagement for Australia as an independent dominion. The Gallipoli Songbook commemorates this crucial event of the Great War with a collection of contemporary songs relating to the soldiers, the public at home, and the sheer poignancy of such a tragic event, all arranged for Piano, Vocal and Guitar. The diversity of songs included in this Gallipoli Songbook is testament to the spirit of optimism, consolation and humour inherent in the collective consciousness at the time of such great anxiety and fear. This is a wonderful compilation of contemporary tunes that were popular both before the War, during the various campaigns and after the War itself. Some songs included here sum up the optimistic and patriotic spirit in the years leading up to Gallipoli, such as Waltzing Matilda and God Save The King, while others like And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, from after the event, look back on the horrors of the Anzac experience on those fateful days.Other tunes come from the wonderful British Music Hall tradition, using irony, sarcasm and humour to overcome the sadness associated with the Great War. Songs like Oh! It's A Lovely War, It's A Long Way To Tipperary and Along The Road To Gundagai were popular both at home and as marching tunes, conquering the petrifying realities of war with rousing music and song. The Gallipoli Songbook also includes wistful, sad and heartbreakingly poignant lyrics that capture the unavoidable sadness associated with the costs of total war, songs like I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now, There's A Long, Long Trail and The Gift Of Years, all bittersweet reflections on love, loss and life's transience. Each song included here is a fantastic way to remember the victims of the Gallipoli campaign, and to understand the power that music has to allay, disguise and reflect upon fear and anxiety. The songs, arranged for Piano, Vocal and Guitar with full lyrics and chord boxes, are a fascinating insight into the period from before the War to after it, and their timelessness makes them as fun to play and sing now, as they were back then. The book also contains a smattering of brilliant images from the time, as well as an extensive foreword that explains, in detail, some of the songs and their meanings. The Gallipoli Songbook is an enjoyable, poignant and fascinating collection of tunes of, or relating to, the Great War and the Gallipoli campaign. Each song is beautiful in its own way, and would be perfect for a commemorative performance, or just an addition to your general repertoire. This songbook is perfect for a musician interested in history, or simply anyone who appreciates the golden age of emotive songs that meant more back then than we could ever imagine today. / Piano/Vocal/Guitare (PVG)

for Orchestra Full Score. Par PENG-PENG GONG. “In celebration of the 40th anniversary of China-U.S. diplomatic relations and in hope to support the promotion of Chinese culture abroad, Peng-Peng Gong's (b. 1992) Tenth Symphony, subtitled 'Peking Fantasy' (Op. 55) was co-commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra in 2017. The world premiere of the 2018 original version was presented by the SPO in April of the same year in Shanghai, while the world premiere of the 2019 revised version was presented by the Philadelphia Orchestra in January at its home venue with the combined forces of both orchestras side-by-side.
Inspired by the artistic power of Peking Opera ?the crowning heritage of Chinese traditional performing arts, the symphony strives to translate the emotional and philosophical experience of the art form for international audiences and to explore the Western orchestra's expressive abilities in capturing the Eastern spirit. The 2018 original version ran as long as 76 minutes, before the composer extensively revised the score down to 40 and presented it in a single movement without pause. The work is scored for a huge orchestra of over 100 players. Main materials that inspired the music are from the traditional Peking Opera repertory: The Drunken Beauty, Farewell My Concubine, In Pursuit of the General, and The Chancellor and the Advisor (lit. Cao Cao and Yang Xiu).
'Peking Fantasy' is in a sweet, direct musical language ...It's a work of highly original sounds presented in a series of vivid episodes.”

Over 100 fantastic pieces are guaranteed to keep you learning from this truly classic selection until the next century! The Library Of Modern Piano Music boasts an unprecedented volume and variety of amazing compositions, some well-known, some more unfamiliar, some composed as standalone pieces and others as film scores, but the one thing uniting them all is their impeccable musicality and how enjoyable they are to play. Featuring the biggest names in contemporary classical music, composers like Einaudi lend their wonderful compositions (Primavera, Una Mattina), and all-round geniuses like Philip Glass are represented with a generous selection of their finest work (Metamorphosis Five, Opening Piece From Glassworks and more). The varied progression of Piano music through the 20th century to the present day has given rise to an exceptionally vast and diverse repertoire. The unbelievable depth of the composers included here means you'll rarely be stuck for something to play. Kaija Saariaho, Stravinsky, Francis Poulenc, Dustin O'Halloran, Nico Muhly and Witold Lutoslawski are genuinely just a fraction of the composers featured in The Library Of Modern Piano Music. Some great standalone compositions like Samuel Barber's incomparable Adagio For Strings sit aside excerpts from longer works like a portion of Edward Gregson's An Album For My Friends or Joby Talbot's Once Around The Sun.If you happen to be a fan of film and television scores, a taste of Michael Nyman's distinguished score for The Piano is included, a section from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, as well as parts of Richard Rodney Bennett's score for the now rarely-seen but superb 1980s miniseries of Tender Is The Night. Many established composers are included in this collection who are widely-recognised as masters. However, The Library Of Modern Piano Music also includes many young virtuosos who have not yet achieved that status but are certainly well on their way. These original compositions span standalone pieces, albums, suites and arrangements from diverse talents, making The Library Of Modern Piano Music a collection that is certain to be seen by future generations as a perfect collection of the best of contemporary classical music. / Piano
