It has long been known
that Mendelssohn
performed the work with
three soloists in
succession: Ferdinand
David, who worked closely
with the composer during
its composition and
played it at the
première; the
‘child
prodigy’ Joseph
Joachim; and Hubert
Lonard, a young Belgian
virtuoso about whom
little is
known.
As proof
sheets for the Violin
Concerto in E minor were
long considered lost, it
could be described as
somewhat of a sensation
when proofs for the solo
violin part resurfaced
together with a letter
from Mendelssohn to
Lonard.
The letter
informs us that the
composer invited Lonard
to his home in Frankfurt
in order to make his
acquaintance. It was
already known that
Mendelssohn had given
proof sheets to David;
now we know that he also
gave some to
Lonard.
The
recently discovered
proofs reveal how Lonard
played the concerto with
Mendelssohn on that
memorable evening in
February 1845. Besides
containing bowing marks
and fingering, they also
show how Lonard executed
shifts of position and
where he employed open
strings. Furthermore
modifications made to
dynamic markings and
additional legato bowing
are shown.
It is
safe to assume that all
of this was done with
Mendelssohn’s
approval. That the young
violinist made a positive
impression on the
composer is confirmed in
the latter’s
correspondence following
their joint performance.
Mendelssohn is full of
praise for
Lonard’s playing
and offers to lend his
support in finding
employment in Germany.
This revised

Kai Nieminen (b. 1953)
does not conform to any
isms. He remarks: I feel
like I am a painter in

Palomar was written for
Patrick Gallois and
premiered 2001 in Milan,
Italy. The idea for his
Flute Concerto came to
Nieminen at the Villa
Lante in Rome when he was
kept awake by persistent
birdsong in the heat of
the night. The title
alludes to the last
novel, Palomar, by Italo
Calvino. Though Nieminen
finds inspiration in
literature, the visual
arts and nature, he has
no desire to confine the
listener to any
programme. The aim of the
extra-musical stimuli is
at most to fire his
listeners' imagination
and to make them savour
musical visions with a
mind as open as that of
Calvino's Mr Palomar
examining the little
wonders of the world

grosso style was composed
in 1945 for famous music
broadcaster and author
John Amis. Bergmann's
original compositions for
the recorder, though few,
are now a much-loved part
of the repertoire. This
recently discovered
Septet will be welcomed
by recorder players
everywhere. The opening
prelude (Andante
Sostenuto) is followed by
an extended Fugue. The
final movement is a
Little March in the
composer's most ebullient
style. The work radiates
joy throughout.

The
composer and conductor
Oliver Knussen (1952 -
2018) was loved by many
companions for his
generosity and musical
intellect. To Detlev
Glanert, whose works he
loved to perform, he was
a friend and one of his
'personal heroes'. By his
own admission, he learned
attention to detail from
'Olly', with whom he
worked at Tanglewood as
early as 1986. If
Glanert's Trumpet
Concerto, composed in
2018, is the large-scale
symphonic homage to his
role model, the solo
“Little Letter to
Olly†does the same
in a small format. Two
elegiac adagio sections
frame a boisterous presto
with all kinds of
virtuoso tricks. The
'Letter without Words'
owes its existence to a
suggestion by the cellist
Anssi Karttunen, who
asked for commemorative
pieces for Knussen's 70th
birthday from a number of
composers and premiered
them at the Aldeburgh
Festival 2022.
