The two nocturnes were composed immediately after major surgery, against a deadline, and, despite the music sounding unlike anything I have written before, I decided to keep them exactly as they turned out. 2010 is a Chopin year, and I made this pair of nocturnes into a little tribute, after playing through and listening to most of his output. Never before had I composed under these drugged conditions – the musical dimensions were enormously exaggerated, with each interval and each phrase being elongated out of all proportion, and the whole few minutes filling the whole of time and space. The orchestration, for piano quartet, was influenced by the very neo-classical feel of the chamber version of the concertos, and the harmonic language very much the result of pondering Chopin’s very individual take on J.S Bach. When Billboard Associate Publisher, Jim Beloff purchased his first ukulele at the Rose Bowl Flea Market in 1992, there were no ukulele songbook collections on the market-none-just a few vintage instructional books. As an already-accomplished guitarist, this frustrated Jim, who had fallen in love instantly with this little instrument. Sensing that there might be an opportunity to fill this void, he and his graphic-artist wife, Liz, created Flea Market Music, Inc., which, for thirty years, has published more than three dozen song and instructional books, totaling over one million copies in print. Agustin Pio Barrios Ferreyra, a Paraguayan composer and guitarist, is nowadays known as the creator of the Mangorean or Indo-American school of the Guitar. 'The name, Mangoré, was adopted in honor of the great chieftain Mangoré, an important personage of the Paraguayan jungles'.Mangoré used for his works popular folkloristic themes of South America as well as sounds of nature ('the still waters of ['] the Amazon', 'the song of the birds'). But Magnoré also was inspired by European music: He composed gavottes, minuets and waltzes: 'It was in J.S.Bach where Barrios discovered the source of his universality [']'.Admired by many but despised by more was his way of stringing his guitar: '['] the way he attacked the strings with the fingers sideward, with very little use of the fingernails'. He also invented some kind of a muffler: He put 'small balls of rubber on the Pirastro steel string'. Jesus Benites R. who collected Magnoré's works for this edition says about him: 'Magnore is the genius of South America'. He was a strong influence for many composers and musicians, such as Heitor Villa-Lobos, Manuel Ponce and Andres Segovia.
