Score-Just as the Payne/Elgar Symphony No. 3 is not Edward Elgar's definitive statement Mahler did not complete a Symphony No. 10. He did however leave 'a work fully prepared in the sketch ' the complete unorchestrated musical material. Had he lived Mahler would almost certainly have shaped the material further. This means that the performance edition prepared by Deryck Cooke in the early 1960s is not a completion it's an orchestration of the short score left at Mahler's death in 1911. It nevertheless sounds very 'complete ' both in itself and as a summation of the romantic-epic 19th century German musical tradition.

5 Selected Songs. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. The only known chamber music by Gustav Mahler is a movement for piano quartet from his student days at the Conservatorium in Vienna (1875-1878). The present new arrangements by Ronald Kornfeil go some way to addressing this gap while they also enrich the repertoire with pieces that are very interesting and demanding in their own right. The composer's rich song output includes his Wunderhorn songs, the Songs of a Wayfarer, the Rückert songs, the Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) as well as movements from his symphonies and the Song of the Earth. This book includes a selection of pieces that best suit the sound of the flute while providing plenty of variety. The arrangements transform Mahler's songs from their original conception for voice and piano or orchestral accompaniment into a purely instrumental dialogue between two equally important instrumentalists. In most cases the colourful orchestral versions provide the starting point. The omission of the text also demands different compositional techniques to bring out the various effects between indulgent sweetness and grotesque irony. The tune 'Brother John ' or 'Bruder Martin' to Mahler's recognition is used in the third movement titled 'Funeral March in the Manner of Callot ' to create a sense of irony. The inspiration for this section was a woodprint from a book of fairy tales. The print depicts forest animals serving as pallbearers at a hunter's forest funeral. The question is not so much 'Are you sleeping (forever)?' as it is 'Are we mourning or celebrating?' The animals appear unsure whether to focus on the end of the hunter or the end of the hunt. Mahler sets the tune in a minor key to stress this irony as the music moves between merriness and brooding. The tune appears as a canon or round.

Des Knaben Wunderhorn was an assemblage of folksongs and folksong-style poems collected and adapted in 1805 and 1808 by poets to reflect their concept of German folk poetry. In 1887 Mahler discovered the musical potential of this collection and over the next 14 years it provided him with most of his song texts.In addition to Mahler's 23 songs on Wunderhorn texts this compilation contains his settings of five poems by Friedrich Ruckert.

G major-Mahler's Symphony No.4 In G Major was written at the turn of the century between 1899 and 1901. It is comprised of four movements for a small orchestra which last around one hour (The shortest of the symphonies composed by Mahler). This work features on the 2010 A Level Syllabus. First performed on November 25th 1901 in Munich and first recorded in May 1930 by the New Symphony Orchestra of Tokyo.
