Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809 - 1847) a composé la musique de la pièce de théâtre de William Shakespeare A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Le Songe d’une Nuit d’Été) à deux moments différents. En 1826, à l’âge de 16 ans, il écrit une ouverture de concert (Op. 21). Seize ans plus tard, en 1842, il composa la musique de scène (opus 61) pour le roi Frédéric-Guillaume IV de Prusse, dans laquelle il incorpora l’ouverture existante. L’ouverture a été créée à Stettin (alors en Prusse, aujourd’hui Szczecin, Pologne) le 20 février 1827, sous la direction de Carl Loewe. Mendelssohn a dû parcourir 80 miles à travers une tempête de neige déchaînée pour se rendre au concert, qui est devenu sa première apparition publique. La première représentation britannique de l’ouverture fut dirigée par Mendelssohn lui-même le 24 juin 1829, aux Argyll Rooms de Londres. Après le concert, Thomas Attwood a reçu la partition de l’ouverture pour la garde, mais l’a laissée dans un taxi et n’a jamais été retrouvée. An enchanted night, virtually fragrant dreams, floating fairies & the sensory associations evoked and fashioned by the music of Mendelssohn's overture ; A Midsummer Night's Dream are almost inexhaustible. Written by the composer in 1826 in a carefree summer spent between the summerhouse and his siblings, this is without doubt Mendelssohn's most popular concert overture. The renowned musicologist Friedhelm Krummacher shows in the introduction how finely Mendelssohn interwove motifs and themes. He also looks into the origins of the work, especially a conjectural firstsketch, which is reproduced in facsimile in the appendix.
